MARY ASTOR: Reluctant Legend By Barrie Roberts Among the legendary names of Hollywoodâs Golden Age, Mary Astorâs star shines brightly. Strictly speaking, however, Mary was never a star in the accepted sense of her time, but a featured player. This was of her own choosing. Offered starring contracts at various times, she preferred not to shoulder the responsibility of having her name appear above the title of a film. This decision was due largely to a lack of confidence generated by a childhood dominated by demanding parents who looked upon her as a meal ticket. The public with whom she was very popular nevertheless regarded her as a star. Her career lasted an incredible 44 years, during which time she ran the gamut from limpid ingenue to forceful character player. In 1919 Lucile submitted her photograph to a Fame and Fortune contest sponsored by Motion Picture magazine. She placed among the finalists. This was enough to convince her father to move his family to Chicago, where the magazine had offices. Deemed far too young, when seen in person, she was advised to try again when she was older. She did, and was again placed among the finalists. This time the judges named her runner up in the national contest. It was 1920, and Langhanke felt encouraged to move his family once again, this time to New York to launch his daughterâs career. Once in Manhattan Lucileâs picture caught the eye of photographer Charles Albin, who shot a series of camera studies of the girl titled The Madonna Child. These photographs were seen in turn by Harry Durant of Jesse Laskyâs Famous Players company, and this led to a six-month contract for Lucile with Paramount in New York. During a conference with writer Louella Parsons and producer Walter Wanger, Jesse Lasky promptly renamed the girl Mary Astor.

Eric Linden Too Much Youth by Barrie Roberts Eric Linden's Hollywood career lasted exactly ten years. It started in 1931 with him giving an arresting performance as a youth gone wrong, who ends up accused of murder in Are These Our Children? His final film, Criminals Within , made when he was 31 years of age, presented him as a youthful army private helping to round up foreign spies operating within the United States. Eric was an excellent actor, but his youthful appearance condemned him in the eyes of producers to playing for the most part confused adolescents. Meanwhile, due to these career limitations, his frustrations grew. He left Hollywood several times to "find himself," as he put it in 1934 in an article he wrote for the British magazine Film Pictorial . Eric was ahead of his time. His remark predated the fashionable expression of the 1960's by three decades. Boiled down, it was all simply a question of too much youth. Eric was born in New York City on September 15, 1909, the youngest of five children born to Phillip Linden and his wife Elvira Lundborg. The elder Linden had been born in New York, but as a young man returned to Sweden, the land of his parents. He became a professional pianist and an actor with the Theater Royal in Stockholm. Elvira was a native Swede, born on a small and remote island in the Baltic Sea. Reputedly she saw no other human beings except her parents till sent to Stockholm at the age of 13 to work as a maid in a hotel. In Stockholm the pretty, young girl met Phillip Linden, who was several years her senior. The couple were married when Elvira was 15.

NEGenWeb Project - Lincoln County Who's Who in Nebraska, 1940 Who's Who LINCOLN COUNTY Theo. Lowe, Jr. INCOLN County, the home of the buffalo and the hunting ground of the Pawnee and Sioux Indians, is located in the Great Plains area and is the third largest county in the state of Nebraska. Known at one time as Shorter County, it comprised most of the western part of Nebraska and extended into Colorado and Wyoming. In fact no definite boundaries were ever established. The first white man to explore this region was Coronado, a Spanish cavalier, who came through in 1541. Then Perre and Paul Mallett explored the valley of the Platte in June 1739 and came as far as the forks of the North and South Platte rivers, about three miles east of North Platte. Major S. H. Long in 1819 followed the Platte to its source and in 1825, six years later, William H. Ashley, a soldier and fur trader from St. Louis, spent part of the winter at the forks of the river, the only place where fuel could be obtained. He found a band of Pawnee Indians here under the leadership of Chief Two Ax, and many pleasant days were spent preparing for the winter hunting and getting the lay of the country. Having obtained all the information he considered necessary, Mr. Ashley decided to leave late in January and prepared to get ready for the journey up the south fork. When Two Ax was informed of the plans, he went to Ashley and told him he could not go for four days as his men were about to make a surround. Mr. Ashley, a military man, knew the ways of the Indians and decided that it would be best to stay. He and his men saw one of those wonderful spectacles of the plains, a buffalo surround.

Remembering M. Searle Wright an interview with Ralph Kneeream and Bruce Bengtson by Lorenz Maycher in the choir room of Christ Church, Reading PA June 26, 2004 The great American organist and composer Searle Wright made his last public appearance at Marilyn Mason's April 4, 2004 performance of Dupre's "Stations of the Cross" at Trinity Episcopal Church in Bethlehem, PA. The date also happened to be Mr. Wright's 86th birthday, and Professor Mason and a small group of friends helped celebrate with Mr. Wright at a dinner party at the Hotel Bethlehem. At the dinner, Marilyn Mason gave this birthday toast: "Age is like art - it's open to interpretation." Pictured below are Searle Wright and Marilyn Mason seated at the 1955 Aeolian-Skinner organ at Trinity Episcopal Church in Bethlehem following her recital: There is another photo taken that same evening of Mr. Wright trying out the organ, with a delighted Marilyn Mason registering for him. After playing a few chords, Mr. Wright turned to the church's rector and proclaimed the organ to be "quite beautiful and very refined." Here is that photo: Less than three months later, Ralph Kneeream and Bruce Bengtson met with Vermont Organ Academy director, Lorenz Maycher in the choir room of Christ Episcopal Church, Reading, PA to reminisce about their associations with Searle Wright.
