Friday, May 7, 2004 Bronfman, symphony pulsated with energy Concert review
By Janelle Gelfand
The Cincinnati Enquirer
How pianist Yefim Bronfman had any energy left after his punishing performance of Prokofiev's fiendishly difficult Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra Thursday night is a mystery. But after his astounding tour de force, he followed it up with another: the pummeling final movement of Prokofiev's Sonata No. 7 The symphony's season finale under Paavo Jarvi was an evening in which each moment seemed more electric than the last and which had the audience on its feet, cheering, three times. From the orchestra's first performance of Lutoslawski's Symphonic Variations , which opened the evening, to a rewarding performance of Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 , which concluded it, the musicians were energized and inspired. Prokofiev's Concerto No. 2 in G Minor is, in Bronfman's own words, "a symphony for the piano." A true endurance test, its pounding rhythms and staggering technical demands are relentless - yet there are also moments of melting lyricism. A bear of a man, Bronfman, 46, met the challenges with both power and finesse. His softer phrases had beautiful tone and were intensely romantic. He controlled the mounting crescendos with mesmerizing power, navigating fistfuls of chords, diabolical runs and leaps as if he had 20 fingers.

Music director Hans Vonk has been forced to bow out of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra's annual concert at New York's Carnegie Hall, this Friday, due to illness.
In December, Vonk, 59, announced that he was suffering from a relapse of Guillain-Barre syndrome, which causes weakness in the arms and legs. He had originally been diagnosed with the problem in 1988.
In a statement, concertmaster David Halen said, "It is a great personal tragedy to me and to the orchestra that Hans is unable to perform, He is a man of great courage and has put the welfare of the orchestra ahead of himself in making this decision."
Vonk will be replaced for the performance by David Robertson, music director of the Orchestre National de Lyon in France, in a program that will feature pieces by Debussy and Ravel. He expects to return to the orchestra for upcoming concerts in Los Angeles, Atlanta and Amsterdam.

Stravinsky: The Rite of Spring (1910-13, rev. 1947) In the final concerts of the inaugural season at Walt Disney Concert Hall, Esa-Pekka Salonen gave flight to a new work, Wing on Wing , written to take advantage of the space, and I found it quite effective. In addition to its reference to Frank Gehry’s building and its bird-like contours, the title is a nautical term, describing the two sails of a boat when they are opened to produce the maximum amount of area to catch the wind. Certainly Salonen is thinking expansively here – not surprising at all given the enormous inspiration of Gehry’s masterpiece – and deploys a large orchestra augmented by two soprano soloists and electronics, using huge washes of sound. Perhaps because I had recently heard Sibelius’ Seventh Symphony
