GOGR Music History - Big Jim Waits...
The Dean of the Bass Singers There is no bass singer that had a bigger impact in the world of gospel music in the decades of the 1930s-1950s than Jim Waits. He performed with many of the major groups during these formative years of gospel music, so his hand print is indelibly placed on the early years of gospel music.
Often called "The Dean of the Bass Singers" or "Deacon Big Jim Waits," he set a standard of excellence in the field of bass singers. He had a style and manner that showed love for his fans and his peers. He excelled not only on the stage, but in the recording studio and on the radio. His rich bass voice was heard throughout the country as he performed gospel songs like no other. I will not attempt to enumerate all of the groups with which Waits performed. However, he filled the bass role for many of the major quartets during the 1930s-1950s.
Jim spent several years on the vaudeville circuit before giving his life to gospel music. One of the first groups he sang with was the "Sunny City Four." He was with this group when he made his first real tour when they were hired to travel to New York and sing for a chain of theaters.
In his early years, Jim sang with groups such as the Electrical Workers Quartet, the John Daniel Quartet, and the Belmont Quartet of Atlanta. He was with several groups in the Stamps organization including the Stamps Baxter Mixed Quartet, and he replaced Frank Stamps in the Stamps Quartet in Dallas, Texas. Jim soon joined forces with the rival Vaughn music company when he joined the Vaughn Radio Quartet. This was said to be one of the finest quartets in the gospel singing field in that day.

    Wow. I can't believe it's finally over.
I wanted to do something special to celebrate the 5th birthday of the Literary Kicks website , and I decided to put together a small poetry reading that would showcase Beat writers and web writers together on the same stage. I invited a few readers, a few more signed on, the focus began to broaden and take on new dimensions, and the next thing I knew my small birthday party was starting to look like a huge poetry marathon. I knew my friend Brian Hassett knew how to put on good poetry events, so I asked him to get involved, and with his help we secured a prime spot, the legendary folk-rock club The Bitter End , in downtown Manhattan. The setlist kept growing until I had assembled such an amazing group of talented poets, web writers, jazz musicians, haiku masters, spoken-word artists, punk rock legends and Beat storytellers, I could barely believe it myself. I spent much of the last few weeks running around the city like an idiot, trying to organize posters, hotel rooms, musicians ... in fact some friends report seeing me walk into a fire hydrant in a confused daze, scribbling in a notebook and yelling into a cell phone. I have no memory of this but I believe it. Anyway, Wednesday night July 21 finally rolled around, and it was time to get on stage. Here's how the night went down: Vermont writer Marie Countryman opened with some self-revelatory poems, followed by an excellent short story, '

    About this Project:
This debut CD project has its genesis in my desire to bring three pieces to attention that have not been previously recorded and that I feel are a great contribution to flute repertoire and to the world of music. The title of this CD project comes from the title of the piece by Leo Kraft "From The Hudson Valley" . This piece is filled with imagery and effects that bring to mind the lyrical beauty of the Hudson Valley. There are scenes within the piece that portray the ominous danger of storms in the mountains and there are many shifting tonal colors that carry you from danger to safety once again. I was one of the flutists who commissioned this piece and I was privileged to perform the premiere in August 1998, and so it has great meaning in my life. The photos that I've selected for this CD cover are my own, taken one fall day from the top of Bear Mountain. "Spring in Bucks County" is by a relatively obscure New Jersey composer

Craig Schlatter is the Director of the Academy for Music and the Arts. A former jazz pianist for the United States Marine Corps Band, Craig brings an understanding of leadership, organizational structure, and arts education with him. He is an accomplished piano instructor, performer and composer of numerous works for piano and voice. Regarding music education, Craig believes relationships are of critical importance in allowing students to fully develop their music and arts potential. “We hire instructors based on the quality of their teaching and passion for the arts. Allowing children to fully develop their music or arts potential is best realized through a strong relationship between the instructor and student.” Craig will be testing his own music potential this December with the CD release of Spirit of the Prairie, a compilation of original arrangements and compositions for piano. Craig is a strong supporter of the Bloomington Cultural District and heavily involved in the local community. He is a member of the Downtown Bloomington Residents Association, Leadership McLean County, an accompanist for Second Presbyterian Church, and involved in Bloomington’s Downtown Art Walk and Holiday Vignettes Committee. Craig has also appeared as a guest speaker/consultant at Illinois State University, the Escondido School of Music, and local service organizations.

Volume 38, No. 2 TABLE OF CONTENTS POMONA COLLEGE WEB
How has a small college like Pomona attracted and produced so many important figures in the world of music? Associate Professor of Music Tom Flaherty It began again with a low C. The notelovingly coaxed by Associate Professor of Music Tom Flaherty from his cellowould have been remarkable if only because it was the first note concert audiences have heard in Little Bridges in more than a year, the hall having undergone a major renovation to make its acoustics even more dramatic. The success of the renovation was clearly evidenced by the purity and richness of the tone as it warmed even the farthest recesses of the hall. But this C, the opening note of Three Conundrums by Pomona alumnus Gary Wolber '90, gave voice to much more. Here was the mentor playing his student's work; here was another milestone in a long, rich history of composition at Pomona College. Wolber was Flaherty's first composition student when he joined the Pomona music faculty in 1989. Flaherty and his wife, Cynthia Fogg, who teaches violin and viola at Pomona, commissioned the piece for a concert to showcase the range of new classical music. To that end, a work by one Pomona composer would have been noteworthy. This mid-September evening's repertoire also featured works by Pomona College Professor Emeritus Karl Kohn and Music Department staff member Joseph Brennan. And how's this for an encore: The concert that followed a week later premiered works by Kohn, Flaherty and Pomona gamelan master Nyoman Wenten.
