VIC BRIGGS England was a grim place in the years following the Second World War and Vic, like many of his contemporaries, was always listening to the radio as a way to escape some of the gloom that surrounded peoples' lives in the early '50's. When he was ten years old Vic heard ‘Rock Around the Clock’ by Bill Haley and the Comets . It was thrillingly unlike anything he had ever heard before and he began to collect records by Bill Haley, Elvis Presley and Little Richard , the wild abandon of the music of the latter quickly made him Vic’s favorite rock ‘n’ roll artist. At 12 years, Vic began to attend Hampton Grammar School . In spite of its very staid middle class traditions and rigid attitudes, and the fact that the headmaster and teaching staff were vehemently opposed to rock music and the culture that surrounded it, pupils from that school had a huge influence on the rock music scene in years to come. Amongst Vic’s contemporaries at Hampton Grammar were Paul Samwell- Smith and Jim McCarty ( The Yardbirds Murray Head (movie actor and singer “One Night in Bangkok”) and Brian May Queen The skiffle craze was in full swing and for Christmas 1957, Vic’s mother gave him a guitar. He quickly mastered a few chords and within months was playing with semipro bands. By the time he was sixteen he was playing two or three nights a week with a band called the Cruisers Rock Combo. The History of The Pleasant Valley Methodist Church A Fore word written by The Rev. Harry E. West in September, 1965. In trying to compile this history of the Pleasant Valley Methodist Church I have been graciously assisted by many people. Many of their names appear in the running commentary. The text has also been proofread by Mrs. Eileen Marcinko, Mrs. Marjorie West and Mrs. Eileen Freezo. The purposes for writing this account are: (1) Many of our members have not been members long. (2) New people are moving into our area each day. We hope that some of them will join us. They too should know something about the church they find. (3) I hope that this account will prove of some use in training young members. (4) Pleasant Valley has come a long way since the days Otis Hossler can remember a hitching rail running along the south side of the church property. I have heard so many of these stories related. It just seems a shame that they were never collected together. When an author writes a book he often dedicates it to someone he loves. This is probably as close as I will ever come to writing a book. Therefore, I would like to dedicate it to my three children: Ronald, Constance and Jonathan. I do this with a prayer that each one of them will have a church someday that they love. Even more, I hope they will always love God, the One to whom the church calls us.

I. and Dances with Wolves, both reviewed in the Hi-Res section this month.] A BEAUTIFUL MIND - Composed and conducted by James Horner - Decca 440 016 191-2: Now this is top-flight package: Worthwhile music from a great film with a unique communicative approach to the subject of mental illness, and an Enhanced CD with CD-ROM features that are more lavish than some of the extras provided on full-fledged DVD videos. Plus it's cross-platform - thank you! Included are the complete full-motion theatrical trailer for the film, a short video interview with composer Horner, a printed conversation with Horner, a printed conversation with director Ron Howard, and a Photo Gallery of about a dozen shots. The classically oriented soundtrack music is varied and listenable even if you haven't seen the film. Again there is the commercially-required vocal number in there - at least the vocalist is fine (Charlotte Church). But that track is best ignored. CHARLOTTE GRAY - Music composed by Stephen Warbeck - Sony Soundtrack SK 89829: Another rather classical score, this one featuring some attractive violin and piano solos. Starring Cate Blanchett as a Scottish nurse, the story is set in WW II period France and efforts of the French underground fighting the Nazis. The 15 cues are programmatic in nature but not overly obvious. Nice orchestrations and full, rich sonics. Unless one is getting the original mono optical track off a historical film, soundtrack albums today have just as high fidelity as most other CDs.

Long John Baldry Brian Auger - keyboards/vocals (born July 19th 1939, London) Rick Brown - bass guitar Micky Waller - drums By November 1964, Auger had acquired a Hammond organ for himself and recruited bassist Ricky Brown and drummer Micky Waller, both of whom were former members of Cyril Davies' All Stars. This more dynamic music secured the group work in clubs and discotheques, including the famous Flamingo Club in London. From the remnants of Steampacket Auger put a new version of the Trinity together in September 1966. Retaining the services of Driscoll and Briggs, Auger completed the line-up by adding a second guitarist in Gary Boyle and bringing in Roger Sutton (replaced by Dave Ambrose in 1967) on bass and Clive Thacker on drums. By now they were billed as The debut album "Open" was released in 1967 without attracting much attention until a cover of Bob Dylan's "This Wheel's On Fire" reached #5 in the charts during the early summer of '68.
