Not all contemporary settings are so novel. "Three Songs on Poems of Louise Bogan" (1989), a work by the young American composer David Rakowski (b. 1958), is more traditionally set for voice and piano. While these songs are direct descendants of the lieder and chansons of the previous century, they reveal the emotional rawness and candor of their texts in a confessional manner unthinkable even fifty years ago. "Late" is a study in disaffection and alienation, a vocal line that stuns with its cool apathy. In "Cassandra," composure turns to unchecked frustration and rage of one to whom no one listens. The singer articulates the words in speech-like fashion, in fuming recitative, as the piano offers hollow support.
Song, like a wing, tears through my breast, my side,
And madness chooses out my voice again,
Again. I am the chosen no hand saves.
Harmonically lush and inviting, Rakowski's music is also extraordinarily tactile. "To Be Sung on the Water" shares the buoyancy of other water pieces, like Debussy's La Mer, Schoenberg's "Farben," Op. 16 No. 3 ("Summer Morning on a Lake"), and Schubert's "Auf Dem Wasser zu singen." It embodies musically the strong rhythmic drive of Bogan's text.
Beautiful, my delight

Entrée Grand Orgue Pierre Cochereau (1924-84) (from ‘Les Offices du Dimanche’, 1974) transcribed by David Briggs Scherzo Symphonique (1968) Pierre Cochereau (1924-84) transcribed by David Briggs I never had the good fortune to meet this extraordinary personality who has so influenced my own musical development. Over a period of 11 years, from 1984, I spent thousands of hours transcribing some of his more famous recorded improvisations from LP (and later CD). Everything that Pierre Cochereau improvised at Notre-Dame from 1969 until his death was recorded by Francois Carbou, Cochereau's greatest confidant, and owner of Disques du Solstice. The many releases of Cochereau at Notre-Dame have become benchmarks for the study of improvisation, and have won considerable popularity amongst the music-loving public.

Sitting On Top Of The World
It's an acoustic boogie woogie/country blues album with George Pearson and Damon Sawyer. 50% pure boogie (Honky Tonk Train Blues, Pinetops Boogie Woogie, The Honeydripper etc) 50% downhome, raucous acoustic blues from George, all very live. Review by Lionell Ross published in Blues In Britain This CD brings together as a duo two excellent musicians, who have collaborated over several years in the context of bands, most notably, in Sonny Black's Dukes. Daniel Smith is one of the very best blues pianists in the UK, while George Pearson is a highly regarded bass player. Here, however, he displays his less known competence on guitar. The duo is backed by Damon Sawyer on drums.
The album opens splendidly with a fine version of Robert Johnson's "Rambling On My Mind", with George on vocals. Joseph Liggins' "Honeydripper" is then given the treatment, with Daniel in sparkling form on piano and George providing some nifty guitar work. "Jimmy's Blues" is the first of two Smith compositions on the album - a slow blues instrumental, beautifully played by Daniel. Bessie Smith's "Thinking Blues" sees a return to vocal duty by George Pearson before delivery of his own composition "The Twins", a medium paced shuffle instrumental, which again displays George's talent on guitar. Daniel Smith excels again on Mead Lux Lewis's "Honky Tonk Train Blues" and Pinetop Smith's "Pinetop's Boogie Woogie", which are separated by a nicely laid back rendition of Howlin' Wolf's "Sitting On Top Of The World" by George. Daniel then switches to organ to back George's vocals on Roy Rogers' "Don't Say A Word" before ending the album on piano with his own composition, the foot-tappingly upbeat "J B

Biographical Notes
John Webb was born in 1969 in London. He was educated in Essex where he started playing the piano and violin at a (fairly) early age. He began to compose at 14, and two years later attended Colchester Institute studying A-level music and German. Here he took an active part in the college's musical life as both pianist and composer and was thankfully inactive as a viola player.
By moving to Birmingham Conservatoire he was happily able to give up the viola completely- a considerable gain to the viola playing world at large. Here he studied piano with Frank Wibaut and composition with John Joubert.
As a founding member of the Thallein Ensemble he performed works by Berio, Messiaen, Finnissy, Ives and Schnittke. Schnittke was a major interest at this stage - in his final year he completed a dissertation on the composer's

After the success of his 1968 TV special , Elvis decided to stop making movies and to go back to live entertaining as soon as his movie contracts were up. He hadn't toured in years. By that time, his bassist from the 50's, Bill Black, had passed away. His lead guitar player, Scotty Moore, and his drummer, D.J. Fontana, were busy with session work. Before he could begin to tour again he needed to recruit, along with back-up singers and other show members, a new core rhythm group. The new players would eventually become known at The TCB Band, a nod to the "Takin' Care of Business" slogan and logo Elvis would adopt for his personal and professional life.
Elvis' first live concert engagement was to be a four-week run at the new International Hotel in Las Vegas beginning on July 31, 1969. By mid-July he and his new band began rehearsals for the show. The group consisted of: James Burton (lead guitar), Larry Muhoberac (piano), Jerry Scheff (bass), Ronnie Tutt (drums) and John Wilkinson (rhythm guitar). Various gentleman players came and went from the band over the years. Following is the first of two installments of brief bios on these artists:
