Introduction
In pictorial work collage is an art form in which compositions are made out of pieces of paper, cloth, photographs and other miscellaneous objects, juxtaposed and pasted; any collection of things. The word comes from the French coller (to stick) and colle (glue); originally from the Greek kolla. For the purpose of my talk about `quotation and collage in music' I am defining collage as those passages of music which appear to be `stuck on' to the main body of the musical composition - either in the form of quotation from other music; the attaching of every day sounds and mundane instruments; or sound being grafted on by means of tape-recorded, computer and other electronic means.
Quotation
The quotation of other people's music, or self quotation, often appears as something fixed on to the music like a collage and on first hearing can come as a bit of a surprise. Its sudden appearance may amuse (or perhaps alienate) those who know where the quotation comes from. There will be different reactions to the music (presumably) from those who don't recognize the quote. What is our reaction after several hearings and does the surprise lose its initial impact on later hearings? It is interesting to consider why composers choose to attach the work of others on to their music. Is it by was of a tribute or is the technique used as a scornful mockery, a rhubarb, a send up, a lampoonery or micky-taking?

While Adventures (1914) is an extroverted work, depicting a full day in the life of a babe in a stroller in music of great humor and bright orchestral colors, the two symphonies (each lasting less than 20 minutes) are much more inward pieces, peaceful and gently lyrical rather than outgoingly Romantic. The first (1940) is a reworking of an earlier symphonic attempt from 1917 condensed into a single-movement work in five sections full of mercurial changes of tempo and mood. The second is a 1947 revision of a 1934 piano quintet and its three movements are cultured, modest and unostentatious. National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine; John McLaughlin Williams. Sophistication and Brazilian Rhythms
of Gretchen Parlato
Jazz Review by DON HECKMAN
Los Angeles Times: August 29, 2000.
If you liked Astrud Gilberto, you'll love Gretchen Parlato. Although she was born more than a decade after Gilberto recorded her classic bossa nova albums with Stan Getz, Parlato has a similarly pure, sweet voice and an intuitive knack for Brazilian rhythms. Appearing at Spazio in Sherman Oaks on Sunday night, Parlato revealed a level of musical sophistication not always present in Gilberto's singing. Delivering her lyrical passages with crisp articulation, she also improvised in horn-like fashion, investing her lines with an awareness of the shifting flow of harmonies. The choice of material for a show she labeled "Musica Brasileira" was excellent, ranging from Jobim's classic "Chega De Saudade" to such older pieces as Bide and Marcal's "A Premeira Vez" and Geraldo Pereira's "Falsa Bahiana." In each case, Parlato's musicality was a key element in interpretations that often illuminated the heart of the songs. Parlato was aided enormously by the presence of a superb accompanying ensemble: Larry Koonse, guitar, Tamir Hendelman, piano, Tony Dumas, bass, Enzo Todesco, drums. Given ample room to solo, they used the space enthusiastically, with Hendelman's thoughtful solo on "Chega De Saudade" a highlight of the set.

December 2004 Friday 17, Saturday 18 December, Waterfront Hall, 7.30pm Concert details Tuesday 21 December, News Letter (from the paper's new Spectrum arts section) Messiah Messiah we heard. The most noticeable difference in this version is the use of three trombones. They added an occasionally startling but ultimately wonderful colour to the sound, as did the woodwind, notably bassoon and clarinet, who were all the more audible because the string sections were relatively small. Pastoral Symphony The Trumpet Shall Sound . The orchestra was led with great spirit by Lucy Drennan. Indeed, this was a very spirited Messiah overall. Andrew Parrott was uncompromising in his choice of tempi and, in general, the assembled forces met the challenge of the pace admirably, once the first chorus got moving. Particularly impressive was the way the Philharmonic Choir maintained the speed of choruses which were sung initially by the four soloists rather than by the choir all the way through. This was a somewhat unusual but very successful approach, underscoring as it did the dynamic and dramatic potential in this wonderful music.
