A tribute to Alfred Brendel on his 70th birthday
He is a philosopher among pianists, one who has explored the secrets behind the notes and the mysteries of the musical world: Alfred Brendel , who will be turning 70 on January 5, 2001. Unlike his nearly coeval colleague, the late Friedrich Gulda , Brendel is not an eccentric. Yet he, too, refuses to fit neatly into the classical-music industry. He has formulated his sometimes controversial but always fascinating insights into music in countless essays, many of which have been published in his books "Musical Thoughts and Afterthoughts" and "Music Sounded Out".
Of Austrian, German, Italian and Czech extraction, Alfred Brendel was born in Wiesenberg, Moravia, on January 5, 1931. Raised in the cultural atmosphere of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire, he began to take piano lessons at the age of six, and gave his first recital in Graz in 1948. The following year, he won the Busoni Competition in Bolzano, an event that marked the beginning of his professional career. Among his most important piano teachers were Paul Baumgartner, Edwin Fischer and Eduard Steuermann.
Brendel's imposing repertoire ranges from Bach to Schoenberg, although he is noted above all for his interpretations of Beethoven, Schubert, Haydn, Mozart and Liszt. He has always shown a pronounced predilection for performing and recording his favorite composers' works in complete cycles, such as the Beethoven piano sonatas, which he has played in their entirety many times during his career. His renderings of Schubert's works are among the most profound and intense of our time. And his Liszt interpretations have greatly contributed to wresting this composer from the purgatory of the misjudged and misunderstood composers.

Me of All People: Alfred Brendel in Conversation with Martin Meyer, by Alfred Brendel and Martin Meyer; translated by Richard Stokes. Cornell University Press (Sage House, 512 E. State St., Ithaca, NY 14850), 2002. 275 pp. $29.95. Among great pianists of the twentieth century, Alfred Brendel is truly unique. He was not a child prodigy, lacked excellent sight-reading skills and ceased formal piano study at age 16not ordinarily a recipe for success in today's competitive musical climate. Nevertheless, this unassuming pianist now is recognized as one of the world's foremost artists. In Me of All People readers get glimpses into the remarkable life of Brendel, the development of his career and his travels and his experiences as a young man in Vienna. Also highlighted are Brendel's views of the freedoms and obligations of a performer, the work of musicians who have fascinated him and his endeavors as poet and essayist.

He is widely regarded as one of the great classical pianists of the second half of the 20th century Brendel was born in Vzmberk (now Loučn¡ nad Desnou Czechoslovakia (now Czech Republic ) into a non-musical family. They moved to Zagreb when Brendel was six, and later to Graz . They lived there during World War II , towards the end of which the fourteen year old Brendel was sent to Yugoslavia to dig trenches. However, he caught frostbite and was taken to hospital. Throughout his childhood, Brendel had occasional piano lessons, but otherwise little formal music education. After the war, Brendel composed music, as well as continuing to play the piano and paint . He never had any more formal piano lessons, however, and although he did attend masterclasses with Edwin Fischer and Eduard Steuermann , he is largely self-taught. Brendel gave his first public recital in Graz at the age of seventeen. He called it "The Fugue In Piano Literature", and as well as fugal works by Johann Sebastian Bach Johannes Brahms and Franz Liszt , it included some of Brendel's own compositions. However, he gave up composing shortly after this to concentrate on the piano. In 1949 he won 4th prize in the

Alfred Brendel
Classical The great pianist Artur Schnabel once said that he was only interested in playing music that is better than he could ever perform it. His spiritual heir, both in terms of that vaunted philosophy and in repertoire, is Alfred Brendel. Brendel is a true classicist, one of the masters of our time, and the program for his recital at Verizon Hall comes from the heart of that world, with music of Mozart, Schubert and Beethoven. For all of the purity of his approach, the brilliance of Brendel lies in his ability to present this very familiar material with a spontaneity and attention to inner detail that goes to both the hearts and heads of modern audiences. Like Schnabel, Brendel seeks high beauty and wisdom in his music playing, but never fails to present thrilling pianism at the same time. It is incredible that the career of this ebullient artist now spans over a half century, more incredible still how rarely he has appeared on Philadelphia stages. Fri., March 26, 8 p.m., $28-$68, Kimmel Center, 300 S. Broad St., 215-893-1999.

For those of us who do not regularly have the opportunity to be in Europe, public broadcasters come to the rescue. Thanks to WFMT Fine Arts Network and WNED (I tune in to the Buffalo outlet) an all-Beethoven program from the 2001 Beethoven Festival in Bonn (although this program took place on Cologne’s huge Philharmonie) was broadcast yesterday. Pianist extraordinaire, Alfred Brendel, was the soloist in the G major concerto and easily the program’s highlight. I have yet to hear this master in person but will remedy that omission in March when he visits the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra for performances of Mozart’s 25 th Piano Concerto (see below for further information). Anyone within flying/driving distance should be there. At seventy-one, there can’t be too many decades of superlative music-making left from this consummate artist.
