MOMENTS OF HAPPINESS
Alfred Brendel wins the
International Ernst von Siemens Music Award 2004,
reported by TESS CREBBIN
One of the world's foremost pianists, essayists and music writers, Alfred Brendel , is the recipient of the 2004 Ernst von Siemens Annual Music Award, which was awarded in Munich, Germany on 14 May at the Kammerspiele . Upon receiving the 150,000 euro award, Brendel thanked his family, friends and loyal audience for 'allowing me moments of happiness in a world that frequently seems to be chaotic and upside down.' The charming and modest star-pianist was the first to record Beethoven's complete works for piano and he has made a name for himself with Busoni's piano music, Schubert's sonatas, the piano concerto of Arnold Schoenberg, the later works of Liszt and many other composers. He is recognized worldwide as being one of the foremost pianists alive today and in 1998 celebrated his fiftieth anniversary of performing. He has been living in England since 1971 and has published two critically acclaimed English-language books on music: Musical Thoughts and Afterthoughts and Music Sounded out Brendel's family background is Austrian/German/Italian/Slavic and he received no formal instruction after the age of sixteen. Proud of being largely self-taught, Brendel started his international career in 1949 when he won a prize at the Busoni competition.

As he reaches the age of 70, he is now the most obvious successor in the long line of great European pianists such as Artur Schnabel and Wilhelm Kempff. This latest recording of live performances by Brendel of works he is credited with bringing to the fore of the piano repertoire is an aural testimony to his art. Brendel the Pianist Man and Mask ) to celebrate his 70th birthday, which will probably feature some footage of these live recordings. This documentary will be broadcast in January in the UK, and later on worldwide (dates to be confirmed).

AN INTRODUCTORY COMMENT ON THE MUSIC CRITICISM OFFERED HERE
Beethoven at the Piano
As lay people, we can find expert comments on the works of classical music in books, periodical publications and in CD brochure comments. These may be rendered from a variety of viewpoints: from that of the biographer, that of the musicologist, that of the music critic or that of the active musician. Here, with respect to Beethoven's 32 piano sonatas, first of all, I want to list the relevant literature that I found in the bibliographical listings of the books I consulted in creating this section. Besides Thayer's standard biography, the authors I consulted are, in alphabetical order: Barry Cooper (Beethoven: 2000), Joachim Kaiser (Die 32 Klaviersonaten Beethovens und ihre Interpreten: 1975), William Kinderman (Beethoven: 1995) und Maynard Solomon (Beethoven: 1977 und 1998). The following list is arranged in the alphabetical order of the authors of the works I found and lists the titles of the works written by them, particulars with respect to each publication and by what above-noted authors they have been listed in their respective bibliographical sections. Autor Title Particulars with respect to the Publication Mentioned by:
