Ludwig van Beethoven
Piano Sonatas: An Overview of Selected Recordings
By Ron Drummond
[The following survey of Beethoven sonata recordings, written in 1996, was never intended to be comprehensive. It was meant as a survey of selected recordings. There were numerous famous recordings that I deliberately chose not to include, some because they were already known quantities and others because at the time I was not yet sufficiently familiar with them to comment. The recordings I did survey struck me then, and still strike me now, as being important and significant and worthy of your consideration. Ron Drummond, 9/23/04] Any complete recording of a cycle as diverse as Beethoven's is going to be uneven, period. You will not find a be-all end-all. Nevertheless, I do think it's useful to have a complete recording by one artist, for the insights a single, refined sensibility can bring to Beethoven across the full range of his sonatas. But one should also consider supplementing a complete recording with additional recordings of individual sonatas by various performers. Of complete sets, I highly recommend Richard Goode on Elektra/Nonesuch. Goode has been praised in almost all quarters as perhaps the finest surveyor of Beethoven's sonatas since Schnabel. He has all the chops and a wealth of feeling and insight to convey. The recording is state of the art. Though superb throughout, Goode is at his best in Sonatas 12-18.

Since 1996 she has been living in Santa Barbara, California, and become internationally acclaimed for her solo recitals, concerts and chamber music performances. She has previously recorded the music of Liszt and Schubert and this new CD features assured and vital performances of two Sonatas and two Fantasias by Mozart, plus Variations on a Minuet by Duport. Zeynep Ucbasaran also plays with great poise on another new CD of piano works by Scarlatti and Beethoven, together with three twentieth century composers: Ahmet Adnan Saygun, Leonard Bernstein and Robert Muczynski (EROICA JDT 3223). Both discs feature virtuoso performances that are never too flamboyant or hurried from a pianist of world class. J.S BACH - THE WELL TEMPERED CLAVIER, VOL.2

by Bob Neill Beethoven, Piano Trios, Volume 3. The Florestan Trio. Hyperion Records. Approaching this last of three recordings of Beethoven's Piano Trios by what has become my favorite piano trio was a fascinating challenge, mainly because I have been reading Florestan pianist Susan Tomes' richly insightful new book, Beyond the Notes, and because back in the spring I heard the trio play at Union College in Schenectady, New York. Why a challenge? Mainly having listened to these musicians 'live,' having spoken with them, and having read about the trio's interior musical life, I find myself approaching their new recording with almost too much knowledge, too many interests. For example, one of the most fascinating as well as disheartening pieces in Tomes' book is one on the strange nature of the recording process from the performers' point of view: how it contrasts so significantly from 'live' performing. The fact that this piece by Tomes focuses on the making of this very recording makes it even more interesting. I am going to narrow my focus here by taking Susan Tomes' useful advice to reviewers in another of her essays. She is a bit miffed by reviewers who feel obliged to consider recordings of a work in relation to other 'competing' performances, a practice, which we know from A/B audio auditions and reviews, that generally results in a focus on their differences from each other rather than on what each actually

The Restoration Series go straight to the programme The English Church in the Begijnhof is a unique and precious building whose future is threatened unless funds can be found to stop its falling down.
You can read more about the Restoration Appeal here
The church stands in the Begijnhof in central Amsterdam, one of the most beautiful courtyards in Northern Europe. The church is one of Amsterdam's oldest buildings, dating back to the late 14th century, and its tower is the oldest in the city still in its original form. The church houses the longest established English speaking congregation outside the UK, which has worshipped in the same church since 1607.
It is also a famous centre for chamber music in The Netherlands, with superb acoustics, thanks to the original wooden roof of the 15th century nave.
Twenty-five years ago, as part of a major rebuilding project, the foundations of the 1665 nave extension were renewed. However, in recent months significant cracks have appeared in the walls of the tower and the nave. A survey by a professional engineer has revealed that the 15th century foundations of both the nave and the tower need urgent attention or the building will collapse.

"Native of Warsaw" Series Recital
Date:
Thursday, 04 December 2003, at 19:00
Venue: Poland, Warsaw - Royal Castle
Organizations: Royal Castle Fryderyk Chopin Institute International Federation of Chopin Societies IFCS
Description "Native of Warsaw..." series is a joint project of the Fryderyk Chopin Institute, International Federation of Chopin Societies and Royal Castle in Warsaw. The project includes a series of recitals, chamber music concerts and lectures, which take place in the Royal Castle from June until December 2003. The main idea behind the project is to reconstruct the historical sound of the fortepiano that was known to music lovers of the 19th century. Very few people realize how different was the 19th century piano from modern Steinway pianos. In Poland there are only a few 19th century instruments, most of which are museum exhibits impossible to play. The piano owned by the Fryderyk Chopin Institute, manufactured by Erard, famous Parisian company, is not only constructionally identical to instruments known to Frederick Chopin, but is also in perfect technical condition and meets all the requirements of a concert instrument. All concerts take place in intimate interiors similar to those in which concerts were held at the times of Frederick Chopin. Belongs to: III International Conference "Chopin's Works in the Perspective of Analytical Conceptions" Program

Some press-reviews: "Henry Kelder deserves a place on international stages, everybody should hear him. He´s so honoust, direct and diverse; his touch is right from the heart." "The sound he produces is unique, that´s how you want the piano should talk, or sometimes you don´t want to: you must!"

Row Threatens Hendrix Museum
Proposals to open a museum dedicated to rock guitar legend Jimi Hendrix have run into trouble because of a row over his former home, reports the BBC. The run-down house has already been moved once and local authorities are now demanding it be moved to another site. Hendrix supporters hoped to turn the home into a museum for the guitarist.
The James Marshall Hendrix Foundation moved the building when the land it was built on was to be developed for housing in 2002. Now the City of Seattle wants its new plot to be used for development, giving a deadline of February 22 for the house to be moved. “We have not threatened to demolish the house. We've simply asked that they have to move it," says John Franklin, Seattle’s operations department chief.
Janie Hendrix, the guitarist's stepsister, says the family are still hoping the guitarist would be honored by having a road named after him. "That's something my father really wanted to see," she said. "It would be nice if we didn't have to fight for everything to get it."
