InfoBeat - Denmark pianist Victor Borge dies at 91
GREENWICH, Conn. (AP) - Victor Borge, the daffy pianist whose whimsical approach to the classics earned him the moniker the ``clown prince'' of Denmark, died Saturday. He was 91.
Borge's daughter, Rikke Borge, said her father died peacefully in his sleep at his home as the family was gathering to celebrate Christmas. He had just returned from a trip to Copenhagen, the city of his birth.
For decades, Borge delighted audiences by deflating the pomposity of classical music. He fell off his bench, played music upside down and repeatedly milked laughs from such classic routines as ``phonetic punctuation'' in which he used goofy sounds to indicate commas, periods and question marks in his monologue.
``I think he brought laughter to every person he came in contact with,'' Rikke Borge said Saturday. ``He had a long and happy life.'' Borge kept up a busy career into his 80s, touring and issuing videos, including his most popular, ``The Best of Victor Borge,'' which sold some 3 million copies. His longtime agent, Bernard Gurtman, said he had had concerts booked for the next two years.
``Some people reach the point where they must try desperately to hold on to something that isn't there anymore, no matter how great they are,'' Borge said in an interview in 1986. ``This is where I am very, very lucky. We all do what we can, we all have limitations. Apparently, within my limitations, there is enough to go on and on and on and on.'' Borge performed 100 or more nights a year, sometimes as pianist and sometimes as conductor, usually as a clown but sometimes in dead earnest. In his later years, he directed Mozart's ``Magic Flute'' in Cleveland and prepared a concert version of ``Carmen.'' In 1999, he was one of five performers selected for the Kennedy Center Honors.

Victor Borge: The one-man Marx brothers http://www.jewishworldreview.com I SAW the obituary in the paper and laughed out loud. Not a very seemly thing to do at the death of a 91-year-old, but he would have understood. I can picture The Great Pianist now in white tie, flipping his tails before he sat down on a piano bench that wasn't there. Once again he was racing his poor page-turner through a too-familiar bit of music in a mad rush to the finish line. Or maybe sitting there drumming his fingers while the page-turner hustled and rustled to catch up. Victor Borge was young, then middle-aged, then old, but only in years. In his mind, he was always in his teen-aged prime. There were times when he would follow the music right off the piano, and then follow it himself. He was from a different, better-humored, sillier yet subtler era, and it was a great era to visit for an evening. After all those years we knew what was coming but not when, and somehow the musical punch lines never lost their punch. I'm not sure just how he did it, but the oldest act on the boards always surprised from year to year, even decade to decade.

http://www.kcmetro.cc.mo.us/pennvalley/Biology/lewis/crosby/borge.htm
Victor Borge (1909-2000) was a concert pianist and comedian in his home country, Denmark, when the Nazi's invaded in 1940. Borge, a Jew, abandoned all his worldly possessions and fled to the United States, where he got a job in 1941 doing the warmup for the Rudy Vallee radio show. Carroll Carroll, chief writer for Bing Crosby, heard Borge's warmup in Dec. 1941. Borge's act involved reading a story, including each punctuation mark, to which he assigned a sound. Carroll had Borge booked for the very next Kraft Music Hall. Carroll finishes the story: "Victor was scheduled to go on after the station break. That meant there'd be a song by Bing, the Victor Borge spot, a commercial, a song by Bing, another guest spot, a song by Bing, a commercial, theme, sign-off. "I shortened the other guest shot because I knew Victor needed time. We took a chorus out of one of Bing's songs. Victor agreed that he could do the spot in 12 minutes. That is, we thought he agreed. He spoke almost no English and only understood, if anything, what he chose to. Bing's intro said he'd seen Victor Borge warming up an audience for Rudy Vallee and anybody who's good enough to warm up a Vallee audience has got to be good enough to heat up an audience in the old Kraft Music Hall. "Victor came on and repeated the punctuation routine and got the same earthquakelike reaction. After 12 minutes he was still going. We lost a commercial. He kept right on going. We lost a Crosby song. Then we lost a guest spot and another Crosby song and another commercial and the closing theme and we went off the air with people howling and applauding Borge. A telephone call came from New York telling us to sign the guy for as long as possible." (Carroll Carroll

Does anyone remember him? He died some years ago. Borge was a Danish Jew who, while a classically trained pianist and musician, made it big in the United States as a comedian and musician. He had impecable timing and was so funny without ever needing to joke about sex or use inappropriate langauge you had to explain to a child. I think that one of my favorite bits was the inflationnary language. To wit: you look wonderful tonight becomes you look two-derful three-night. Or, instead of I ate a tenderloin, I nined an elevenderloin. Or, he was a cap-eleven in the air five-ce. You kind of have to hear him to it but you get the idea. TrackBack

musical humorist and pianist victor borge (1909 2000) was a Leschetizky pupil . One can almost hear victor borge say Leschetizky couldn t teach
http://hjem.get2net.dk/Brofeldt/Appendix_079_Leschetitzky.htm
A ppendix Leschetizky Some of the most famous pianists who were active from c.1890 and till after WW II were pupils of Leschetizky and they came to him from many countries, which made him form his own opinion about the different nationalities and their caracteristiques. This opinion could be seen as some kind of artistic Credo and it is cited in Annette Hullah's book about him from 1906, and just as a curiosity it is worth repeating here: The English are good musicians, good workers and bad executants, doing by work what the Slavs do by instinct; their heads serving them better than their hearts.
Russians have passion, dramatic power, elemental force and extraordinary vitality. Turbulent natures, difficult to keep within bounds, but making wonderful players when they have the patience to endure to the end.
Poles , less strong and rugged than the Russians, lean more to the poetical side of music; originality is to be found in all they do; refinement an exquisite tenderness and instinctive rhythm.
The French he compared to birds of passage, flying lightly up in the clouds , unconscious of what lies below. They are dainty, crisp, clear-cut in their playing and they phrase well.
