LEONARD BERNSTEIN (1918-1990)
'The Age of Anxiety'
WILLIAM BOLCOM (b1938)
Piano Concerto
Excerpts from the sleeve notes Part One
A. The Prologue - four mixed-up characters in a Third Avenue bar try to sort themselves out: Quant, son of an Irish immigrant; Malin, a medical intelligence officer in the Canadian Air Force; Rosetta, a buyer for a big department store; and Emble, who is in the Navy. A very soft duet for clarinets is followed by a scalic descent on the flute acting as a 'bridge into the realms of the unconscious'. B. The Seven Ages - a four-fold discussion, 'reasonable and didactic in tone'. The seven variations, without a common theme, arise from aspects of previous sections.
1. A lyrical piano solo ending with the scalic descent on the harp.
2. Interactions between piano and orchestra.
3. Cantabile strings without piano.
4. A miniature scherzo in five-time (3/8 + 2/8).
5. A clarinet initiates a restless agitato.
6. A wistful piano solo.
7. Woodwinds lead into a long scalic descent from the piano.
C. The Seven Stages - seven more variations representing a dream-odyssey which symbolizes the inner journey of the four characters in various relationships leading to a 'hectic but indecisive close'.

http://www.bernsarts.com/americanpiano/americanpiano.html

Praise for Anthony de Mare:
"Mr. de Mare's protean talents fit his protean program...the Ives's was played as eloquently as I have ever heard it with warm, if troubled nostalgia." - The New York Times "Mr. De Mare is an amazing artist, and must be doing for contemporary piano literature what the Kronos Quartet has done for the contemporary string quartet. He is sure-fingered and dextrous, and puts his whole soul into his work. The results are remarkable." - UW Gazette , Toronto Praise for Steven Mayer: "...piano playing at its most awesome..." - Bernard Holland, The New York Times "The piano was 'smoking' with overt displays of pyrotechnics. Mayer's playing brought sheer delight to his mesmerized crowdleaving attending pianists weeping by the wayside." - Jeff Manookian, The Salt Lake Tribune Praise for Anthony de Mare's Wizards and Wild Men CD: "This is the most illuminating and powerful CRI release I have heard in a very long time...and important as well as exciting release." - American Record Guide "...an audacious disk...de Mare, playing at the keyboard, strumming the strings, and even signing along, plumbs the lustrous beauty lurking in the challenging scores." -

Since their first performance together in 1973, Pulitzer-prize winning composer/pianist William Bolcom and mezzo-soprano Joan Morris have captivated audiences across the nation and abroad. Heralded as "one of the great musical collaborations of our time" by The Boston Globe, this husband-and-wife duo is highly acclaimed for its finely gauged and vividly imagined interpretations of American popular songs from the late nineteenth century through the 1920s and '30s, as well as the latest songs by Leiber and Stoller, and Mr. Bolcom's own cabaret songs with poet-lyricist Arnold Weinstein. They reside in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where they both are on the faculty of the University of Michigan School of Music. JOAN MORRIS Mezzo-soprano Joan Morris, a native of Portland, Oregon, attended Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington, prior to her studies at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York. She appeared in several off-Broadway and road productions, as well as with harpist Jay Miller at the Cafe Carlyle, the Waldorf-Astoria's Peacock Alley and other Manhattan night spots. In addition to cabaret and concert performances with her husband, William Bolcom, she has appeared as Polly in the Guthrie Theater's production of "The Beggar's Opera," with music by Darius Milhaud and William Bolcom, and as soloist in the 1984 world premiere of Bolcom's "Songs of Innocence and of Experience" at the Stuttgart Opera. Featured in the latter work at its American premiere that same year at the University of Michigan, she repeated it in the 1996 performance at London's Royal Festival Hall (broadcast live over BBC Radio 3), in two performances by the Pacific Symphony Orchestra in February 2003, and will help celebrate the reopening of Hill Auditorium/Ann Arbor in a 20th-anniversary performance of it in April 2004 under the direction of Leonard Slatkin.

Will the real William Bolcom please stand up?
Long before ARTCRAFT Music Rolls began, Arranger Douglas Henderson received many requests for perforating William Bolcom's (then-new) composition GRACEFUL GHOST RAG from his 'Ghost Rag Trilogy' of piano solos. At that time Mr. Henderson was wrapping-up his near ¼-Century of work at The Musical Wonder House (a music museum he co-founded with the Konvalinkas in 1962) ... and cutting rolls for the celebrated 'Candlelight Concerts', which took place in Summer evenings with seated audiences. Many a concert-goer often asked, "How about making a Duo-Art roll of GRACEFUL GHOST RAG ?" ... with Bolcom's SEABISCUITS RAG a close second in the suggestion department.
When the ARTCRAFT label began in the early 'Eighties, GRACEFUL GHOST RAG was at the top of the stack for projects-to-be-done , due to the amount of prior requests.

University of Iowa News Release Oct. 28, 2004 Tse Plays Recent Compositions On Saxophone Recital At UI Nov. 12 Kenneth Tse, a faculty member at the University of Iowa School of Music, will present a free recital of concert music for alto and soprano saxophone together with pianist Alan Huckleberry at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12, in Clapp Recital Hall on the UI campus. Because the saxophone emerged as a solo instrument in the 20th century, most of its concert repertoire is relatively recent. For this program, Tse will play several very recent works, and one that is just over 60 years old: "Fault Lines" composed in 1999 by Perry Goldstein. The Sonata for alto saxophone and piano from 1989-90, one of the final works of Czech composer Jindrich Feld. The senior work on the program, "Troiseme Chant Lyrique" for alto saxophone and piano from 1942 by Fernande Decruck. "Flying High" for alto saxophone solo, composed in 2003 by David Froom. "Sax de Voyage" for soprano saxophone and piano from 1995 by Jerome Naulais. Tse commented on the newest pieces on his recital: "I recently met these two very talented composers from the East coast: David Froom and Perry Goldstein. Both have contributed quality compositions to the saxophone repertoire and I am happy that I could program both of their music in this recital. And both of them are currently writing trio music for saxophone, bassoon and piano for me, Benjamin Coelho, and Uriel Taschor (from the UI music faculty) for our recording project next spring."

WB: Yes. When I was a very small boy, my mother was playing the piano, I was about three. She played a tune, and I came up with one finger and played the tune after she had finished. So my parents decided to talk to people at the University of Washington. We were then living in Seattle. And evidently, I was very pretty precocious, but there was a time at that point, there was a great vogue for child prodigies. Baby kids go out to play concerts, and they would be living a very abnormal life, having to study with other tutors and they never dealt with other children and so on. When I was five or six, somebody came to our house from LA to Seattle, to try convince my parents to make me go out on a concert tour career. My parents very thankfully said no. I am very thankful that they did that because I have known people who had that experience and I don’t think they have ever recovered. It’s a very cruel thing to do with a child. So I did study music, I began to work a little bit with teachers who have been under the approval of tutelage of the people at the University of Washington.
