As a soloist, Ardizzone won First Prize at the 1995 Rantucci Guitar Competition and placed in the top five at the 1997 Stotsenberg International Guitar Competition. He has performed throughout the midwest and northeast United States with concerts and master classes at the Cleveland Institute of Music, Bowling Green State University, Eastern Michigan University, and the University of Iowa. Ardizzone has studied with Nicholas Goluses, Edward Flower and with Eliot Fisk through a fellowship at the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival. WILLIAM BOLCOM T Born in Seattle on May 26, 1938, Bolcom studied at Stanford University, with Darius Milhaud in 1958 and with Olivier Messiaen in Paris afterwards before settling in New York in the 1960's, where he immersed himself for a time in the ragtime of Scott Joplin and Eubie Blake, as well as pursuing a fascination for another Blake: the mystical English Romantic poet, William. This latter interest culminated in 1984 with Bolcom's powerful cycle, SONGS OF INNOCENCE AND EXPERIENCE, in which he set forty-six Blake poems for solo voice and piano, orchestra and chorus. Demonstrating a flair for the dramatic, a fondness for experimentation and combination of pre-existing styles with his own dissonant textures and jaunty vernacular idiom, Bolcom's catalogue encompasses the Pulitzer Prize-winning 1988 TWELVE ETUDES FOR PIANO, VIOLIN, CLARINET, FLUTE, AND PIANO, ten string quartets, and five piano concerti. Robert and Virginia Bolcom weren't sure what to do with their son William. Here he was, 4 years old, not yet old enough for kindergarten, yet he played the piano like a maestro. And he composed, too-a Mozart in the making. Young William grew up in a cocoon of music. His grandfather was a flamboyant Seattle lumber baron who thought nothing of smoking 20 cigars and downing two quarts of Scotch a day. He built an entire wing on his mansion overlooking Golden Gardens Park to accommodate famous musicians (such as renowned pianist Ignace Paderewski) who visited Seattle to play with the symphony. His father, an industrial light bulb salesman, grew up rubbing elbows with music's elite who dropped by his home all the time. Although no one in the Bolcom household was an accomplished musician (his mom did play a mean "I Love You Truly" on the piano, however), William Bolcom grew up with music in his veins and talent many compared to the masters. Really? The renewed interest in ragtime that was prompted by the Rudi Blesh and Harriet Janis book They All Played Ragtime (1950) in which Eubie provided much valuable information about ragtime and those who created it, may have also renewed Blake's interest in the genre as well. Rolling back to 1945, one of Eubie's first goals in pseudo-retirement was to become more musically educated. So he went to school to learn music theory and ended up taking classes learning the Schillinger composition system. Joseph Schillinger (1891-1943) had created an innovative theory of composition in which certain elements of rhythm, melody and harmony were simplified into mathematical and geometric relationships. In fact, he actually created a catalog of all of the possible results of these relationships. Eubie took quickly to the methodology and completed the four year course in two years. To codify this knowledge Eubie composed what he called his thesis paper on the topic
