October 2004 Idil Biret honoured for two million NAXOS CDs
Numbers like that are quite rare in the world of classical music. The sales figures of Idil Biret’s NAXOS CDs have now exceeded the mark of two million copies sold world-wide, included in this figure are recordings of the complete piano music of Chopin (Grand Prix du Disque Frederic Chopin prize - Warsaw 1995), Rachmaninov and Brahms and the Sonatas of Pierre Boulez (Golden Diapason of the year - France 1995). Last year Biret’s interpretations of Ligeti’s Etudes and Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite featuring the composer’s own piano transcription were released - the latter resulting in an Editor’s Choice award by the British GRAMOPHONE magazine. Since the foundation of NAXOS Idil Biret has been among the label’s most faithful artists.
On the occasion of a gala concert given last Friday in the Benedictine Monastery Gerleve, Germany, the label honoured its star pianist Idil Biret. Chris Voll, Managing Director of NAXOS GERMANY, presented her with a special commemorative plaque celebrating the sales record. Biret’s virtuoso concert was the highlight and finale of an eight-week Turkish-German cultural project ARTE TURCA which staged an art exhibition, poetry recitations, classical and jazz concerts. The Ankara-born pianist praised the project as a good opportunity to „get to know each other better“, and very much appreciated the „concentrated and spiritual atmosphere“ in the fully booked abbey church. For some of the more than 500 listeners there was standing room only.

Finale: Presto Last-minute replacement misses the mark by S. James Wegg The untimely death of the scheduled pianist Ronald Smith in late May threw the organizers of the Singapore International Piano Festival into an urgent search for a replacement, who, at very short notice, could cobble together a recital in the spirit of this year’s theme “Legends of the Piano,” and also complement the programs of the other three performers. Leslie Howard took up this formidable task with mixed results: the works selected particularly the inclusion of the Smith-championed Symphony for Piano Solo were an entirely appropriate tribute to the late master; unfortunately, a few more weeks of preparation might have allowed for a more secure presentation of this magnificent repertoire.
