Contact Leonard Bernstein Composer Larger-than-life Lenny - a phenomenally gifted composer, conductor, teacher, performer; an unflaggingly enthusiastic, brash, enormously complex musician; a man dedicated to breaking down personal, political and musical barriers between people.
In 1947 he extended his hand to the Jewish people in Palestine by conducting the Palestine Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1959 he helped "lift the Iron Curtain in music" (Aleksander Medvedev) in an historical concert tour to the Soviet Union with the New York Philharmonic. He proclaimed his deeply held belief in universal brotherhood - in words on the 40th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima, and in music at the historic dismantling of the Berlin Wall in 1989.
But it is above all in breaking down musical barriers that the world will remember him. Bernstein's career was based on two beliefs: 1) Music is fun. 2) Music matters. He confounded those who would keep "serious" music the province of the elite. He gave us the timeless melodies of West Side Story , revealed the delights of "serious" music to the young, and inducted modern audiences into the mysteries of Beethoven, Brahms and Mahler. In a word, he infected young and old, connoisseurs and the uninitiated with his overwhelming love of music.

Piano Program with Commentary with pianist Barbara Speer tribute to Leonard Bernstein
On Sunday, March 16, The Bard Center presents Piano Program with Commentary with pianist Barbara Speer. The program, free and open to the public, will begin at 3:00 p.m. in Olin Hall.
Speer will perform an 85th anniversary tribute to Leonard Bernstein, Bernstein's arrangement for solo piano of Copland's El Salón México (1939); and a 65th anniversary tribute to Herbert Sucoff, Piece for Piano (1970). The program also will include Ravel's Le Tombeau de Couperin (1918); Rachmaninoff Preludes, Op. 23 (1902-03); and Stefan Wolpe's Blues and Tango (1926) and Two Pieces for Piano (1941).
Speer says that she finds the format of performing with commentary a very successful way of involving the audience with the program, while at the same time breaking down many of the stereotypical barriers associated with 20th-century compositions. She has chosen these specific works in order to demonstrate the dramatic diversity and historical synchronicities of the seminal and volatile decades in which they were composed.

Evening Music with David Garland
Bernstein Thursdays Thursday, October 03, 2002
October 14 marks the twelfth anniversary of the death of American conductor and composer Leonard Bernstein. Remarkably, his popularity and influence only gets stronger as time passes, and his major symphonic and theater works are increasingly staples of concert halls around the world, and heard in everything from classical song recitals to Gap clothing store commericals. Each Thursday in October, Evening Music focuses on both the major and lesser-known works of Bernstein. Here's a preview of what to listen for:
Air Date : Thursday, October 3
Piece : Serenade for Violin
Artists : Hilary Hahn, conductor; Baltimore Symphony; David Zinman, conductor
Recording : Sony 60584
Don't Miss : 20-year-old violinist Hilary Hahn is a splendid champion for the lyrical and jazzy Serenade, an early work of Bernstein's inspired by Plato's Symposium.

    September 25, 1906
He was born in St. Petersburg and studied composition under Maximilian Steinberg, and piano with Nikolaiev at the St. Petersburg Conservatory.
At the age of 13 he wrote Scherzo for Orchestra (1919). His Symphony No. 1 in F, Op. 10 (1924-25) was performed in Leningrad in 1926. In 1927 his Symphony No. 2, Op. 14 "The October Revolution of 1917" was completed, and his Symphony No. 3, Op. 30 "May the 1st," in 1929. These were not symphonies for the State, or Stalin, or Communism. They were statements of the fear, anguish, the hopes, the heroism of the Russian people. As a teenager Shostakovich gained world wide recognition on May 26, 1926 with his first symphony. At the first performance, the conductor, Nikolai Malko commented over the air from Petrograd that, "I have the feeling that I have turned over a new page in the history of symphonic music and of a new and great composer." Within two years Bruno Walter in Germany and Leopold Stokowski and Artur Rodzinski in the US had introduced it as well.

When opposites meet: Krystian Zimerman, Leonard Bernstein and the Beethoven Concertos
When pianist Krystian Zimerman goes on a North-American concert tour, don't expect to hear him just anywhere. On this year's tour, he made it to all of three cities: Chicago, Toronto and New York. Though the pianist, who turned 40 on December 7, 1996, could fill concert halls in every major city, he simply prefers to limit the number of his performances to about 50 per year. Mr. Zimerman who, according to The New York Times, is "considered one of the most remarkable pianists of his generation", has many other interests which keep him from overextending himself. Fluent in several languages, knowledgeable in history and aesthetics as well as in science and acoustics, he radiates an air of scholarliness and gentility. Yet this is the pianist Leonard Bernstein chose in the late 1980s to be the soloist in his cycle of Beethoven piano concertos with the Vienna Philharmonic. Intended to conclude his Beethoven orchestral cycle, it was scheduled to be recorded by Unitel and Deutsche Grammophon. One might have expected a more extroverted soloist, but not a young pianist called a "meticulous, sometimes studied aristocrat" ("Classic CD" in a review of the concertos).

Similar to 2000's Hoagy Carmichael -based Stardust , Somewhere: The Songs of Leonard Bernstein finds pianist Bill Charlap continuing his exploration of great American composers. A longtime fan of Bernstein 's work, Charlap conveys a very personal feeling throughout the album. Some may ask, why is another jazz trio album of standards necessary? Charlap answers this admirably with highly sophisticated yet direct arrangements and his usual stellar improvisational skills. Many of the songs from +West Side Story work astonishingly well in a modern jazz format. Notably, "America" receives an expansive McCoy Tyner meets Tito Puente treatment, while "Jump" is serious post-bop

News report Death of Leonard Bernstein "He was the American maestro." (October 15, 1990) Leonard Bernstein, a towering presence in American music, died of a smoking-related heart attack on October 14, 1990. Just five days earlier, he had announced that he would retire from performing because of health problems. He was 72. Bernstein was called the "Renaissance man of music" for his excellence as a conductor, composer, concert pianist, and teacher who brought classical music to the masses. Born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, to Russian-Jewish immigrants in 1918, Bernstein studied piano and composition at Harvard. The American composer Aaron Copland and others encouraged him to become a conductor after observing Bernstein's intuitive grasp of classical music and unusual ability to play complex orchestral scores on the piano. Bernstein's big break came in 1943, when as an assistant conductor for the New York Philharmonic he was asked at the last minute to fill in for an ill Bruno Walter. The concert was a sensational success, and The New York Times published a front-page article the next day announcing the arrival of a great new conducting talent. For the rest of his life, Bernstein was an internationally sought-after conductor. He had an animated and flamboyant style, and on more than one occasion he actually fell off his conducting podium in his enthusiasm. Refusing to restrict himself to conducting, he composed acclaimed symphonies, operas, and scores for ballets. He was also deeply interested in American popular music, and jazz influences can be found in many of his classical pieces. His best-known works were for Broadway, and in the groundbreaking musical

AMERICAN MOSAIC - Summer Camps for Adults / Leonard Bernstein / Fast Food Film
Broadcast: June 11, 2004 HOST: Welcome to AMERICAN MOSAIC, in VOA Special English. (THEME) This is Doug Johnson. On our show this week: Summer camps for adults, and a question about the musical life of Leonard Bernstein. But first, we have the story of a man who went on a diet no one should copy. Super Size Me (MUSIC) HOST: [Image Removed] (Photo - supersizeme.com) What would it be like to eat fast food for every meal? A young filmmaker decided to find out. His new movie is called "Super Size Me." Shep O'Neal tells us about it. ANNCR: Health experts are concerned that two out of three American adults are overweight. There has been an increase in diseases linked to obesity. Many Americans eat foods that have too much fat and sugar. And they do not exercise enough. Reports say that at least twenty-five percent of American adults eat fast food every day. And McDonald's is the largest fast food company in the world. So filmmaker Morgan Spurlock wanted to find out the effects of eating nothing but fast food at McDonald's three times a day for a month. He followed three rules. He could only eat what was sold at McDonald's. He had to eat every food at least once. And he would order the largest size French fries and soft drink only if the server offered.
