leonard bernstein
American composer, conductor, pianist and writer. He wrote in virtually all genres, often merging popular and classical styles. Leonard Bernstein was something of a musical polymath. In the world of Western art music he enjoyed a worldwide reputation as a conductor and a composer. He was also a great communicator, and perhaps more than anybody else he was able to explain music (especially Western art music) to a wide audience. At the same time, he created music for the Broadway stage, and successfully integrated popular styles (especially jazz) into his musical vocabulary. For all this, Bernstein began his musical study rather late. His family bought a piano when he was ten years old, and he began study without real encouragement from his family. He progressed, studying with various teachers, and attended the prestigious Boston Latin School. He went from there to Harvard (1935-1939) and then to the Curtis Institute, where he studied conducting with Fritz Reiner and Serge Koussevitsky. He also kept one foot in the more popular world, playing with the Revuers in New York (a musical theatre group that included Betty Comden and Adolph Green). By 1943 he was assistant to Arthur Rodzinski, the conductor of the New York Philharmonic. It was here that he gained national and worldwide attention, substituting for an ill Bruno Walter in a broadcast concert. His conducting career progressed rapidly, and he was closely associated with the New York Philharmonic (where he served as music director from 1958 to 1969), the Israel Philharmonic and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He was in demand throughout the world and was the first American to conduct at Milan's La Scala opera house.

I don't want to spend my life, as Toscanini did, studying and restudying the same fifty pieces of music. It would bore me to death. I want to conduct. I want to play the piano. I want to write for Hollywood. I want to keep on trying to be, in the full sense of that wonderful word, a musician. - Leonard Bernstein, quoted in the New York Times Leonard Bernstein was a major figure in 20th Century music and brought to its many facets his considerable verve and dramatic exuberance. As a conductor he led the New York Philharmonic for many years, producing outstanding live performances and recordings. He was also in great demand around the world from many other world-class orchestras such as the Vienna Philharmonic and the London Symphony.

The Bernstein Season is hosted by Radio 3's Tommy Pearson , presenter of Stage and Screen , together with Bernstein's biographer, friend and television director/collaborator, Humphrey Burton . The season features all of the BBC performing groups supplemented by two orchestras with which we enjoy close partnerships: the  Ulster Orchestra and the  London Symphony Orchestra – itself closely associated with Leonard Bernstein over many years. Leonard Bernstein (August 25, 1918 – October 14, 1990) was an American composer and orchestra conductor.
Biography
Bernstein was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts and studied at Harvard and the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. He was highly regarded as a conductor, composer, pianist, and educator. He is probably best known to the public as long time music director of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra; for conducting concerts by many of the world's leading orchestras; and for writing the music for the musical West Side Story . All told, he wrote three symphonies, two operas, five musicals, and numerous other pieces. Bernstein's politics were decidedly left wing, but unlike some of his contemporaries, he was not blacklisted in the 1950s. In the late 1960s and early 1970s he actively supported groups such as the Black Panthers and publicly opposed the Vietnam War.

Leonard Bernstein Remembrance
11 November 1990 As you all must know by now (unless your only reading material consists of Rolling Stone and the Los Angeles Weekly ), Leonard Bernstein died October 14th. The following is a little remembrance I wrote up that evening and posted on some local bulletin boards: Just heard the sad news that Leonard Bernstein died today, aged 72. It was not unexpected, as he'd been in failing health for some time, and had been hospitalized a couple of months ago with a lung tumor and emphysema. Bernstein was a lot of things. He was a conductor, probably the best-known one to the American public. He was a composer, both of "serious" works and of musicals and those musicals include "Wonderful Town" and "West Side Story." (For the latter one, he set words by Stephen Sondheim, in case you'd forgotten!) He was also a pianist of great ability; when Aaron Copland was going to have his piano sonata premiered, and the pianist who was to have played it got sick, Bernstein learned the score, memorized it, and played the premiere in 24 hours! Bernstein was also a prolific writer on music and related subjects; his writings fill up a few books, including

Leonard Bernstein
Leonard Bernstein was a performer, a conductor, and a composer. His parents, Sam and Jennie Bernstein, who were of Russian-Jewish heritage, were not musicians. When Leonard was ten years old, he became fascinated with the piano, and asked his father if he could have lessons. Mr. Bernstein, who at first was not happy about the idea, said yes. Leonard practiced all the time and learned so fast that his teacher said he was a genius. Every spare minute he practiced the piano, listened to music, or tried to write his own music.
Leonard Bernstein began his college career at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. While a student there, he met a famous conductor, Dimitri Mitropoulos. Mitropoulos was very impressed with Bernstein, and suggested that he become a conductor too. Bernstein went on to study at the Curtis Institute of Music, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. At Curtis, Bernstein studied piano, conducting, and composing.
During the summer, Bernstein went to the Tanglewood Music Festival in Lenox, Massachusetts. There he met famous composers such as Aaron Copland , as well as conductors such as Serge Koussevitsky, who helped Bernstein with his career, and Artur Rodzinski, who later became conductor of the New York Philharmonic.
