The Shows Go On This Fall By Kristin Donnelly The fall season at the Hartke Theatre and the Benjamin T. Rome School of Music are in full swing with a production of Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata playing from Oct. 11 to Oct. 14. Other performances this month include concerts by renowned pianist Boris Berman, CUA’s Wind Ensemble, and CUA’s Singers’ Cabaret, as well as a production of the British play, Fen La Traviata is a classic tragedy set in 19 th century Paris, about the love between courtesan Violetta Valéry and her admirer, Alfredo Germont. When Alfredo’s father begs Violetta to leave his son because her indecent status as a courtesan may hinder the marriage of Alfredo’s sister, she agrees to do so. The party scene during the second act provides much excitement, with a conflict between a distraught but furious Alfredo, a miserable but reclaimed Violetta, and her new (but also previous) lover, Baron Douphol. The last act is tragic and dramatic as the lovers reunite – and see that a future together is impossible. Musical highlights include the drinking song, "Libiam ne' lieti calici'" (Let us drink from wine cups overflowing); Violetta's aria "Addio, del passato" (Farewell to bright visions); and Alfredo and Violetta's duet, "Parigi, o cara, noi lasceremo" (We shall leave Paris, my beloved).

The first section offers capsule biographies of pianists through history, alphabetically arranged, that assess the stylistic or pianistic traits of each. Guide to the Pianist's Repertoire
by Maurice Hinson, Maurice Hinson
For a quarter century, "the Hinson" has been indispensable for performers, teachers, and students. This extensively revised edition will be a trusted guide many years to come.
Now updated and expanded, the "New Hinson" is more useful than ever (with 120 more composers than before), guiding pianists to piano solo literature, for themselves and for their students. Maurice Hinson still answers the perennial questions of performers and teachers: What is available? How difficult is it? What are its special musical features? How can I reach the publisher?

Philip Amalong, piano
This is one of those recitals that don't fit easily into any repertoire category, though Amalong's deepest interests, to judge by his program, are with modern-but-in-the-tradition pianism. This is confirmed also by his other (and very fine) recordings as a chamber musician - an anthology of 20th Century flute and piano duos on Eroica, and the captivating trios by Rick Sowash. "Romeo Bids Farewell to Juliet" is from Prokofieff's own transcription of ten numbers from the ballet Romeo and Julie t. This 8-minute andante is almost a conspectus of Prokofieff's inimitable artistry, with its strange mix of angularity, quirkiness, and heartfelt lyricism often conveyed - as in the long, slow coda here - by pitting a steady, march-like staccato accompaniment against soaring, long-lined melodies of unforgettable beauty and tenderness. It has lots of character and nuance here - more than in the too-languid Boris Berman reading on Chandos 8851. Granados's picturesque and voluptuous "laments. or the Maiden and the Nightingale" from
