Contact The Chamber Concert Series The Peninsula Music Festival has been presenting off season chamber concerts for ten years at different locations throughout Door County. Phyllis Alpert Lehrer directs the graduate program in piano pedagogy at Westminster Choir College of Rider University where she is Professor of Piano. A pianist with a broad and eclectic repertoire that ranges from the Classical period to the twentieth century and from art song literature to the Romantic concerto, Canadian pianist Stéphane Lemelin has received particular praise for his interpretations of Schubert, Schumann, Fauré and Ravel. He tours regularly in Canada and has given numerous performances in the United States, Europe and Asia. A frequent participant in summer festivals including the Lanaudière International Festival, Parry Sound, Domaine Forget, Ottawa, and Vancouver Chamber Music Festivals, he has collaborated with artists such as Donna Brown, Boris Berman, James Campbell, Jacques Israelievitch, Peter Schreier, Marc Grauwels, Martin Ostertag, Wolfgang Meier, and the St Lawrence and Muir String Quartets. He has appeared as soloist with most of Canada's major orchestras including the Montreal Symphony under Charles Dutoit. Recital engagements have included London's Wigmore Hall, the Phillips Collection in Washington, the Ladies Morning Musical Club in Montreal and the Vancouver Recital Society. Welcome Biography Teaching Repertoire ... Contact :: Biography :: Like many other pianists, I began taking piano lessons at the ideal age of five. Today, I enjoy performing new music that is often unfamiliar to audiences and also find equal fulfillment in studying and performing the music of the traditional masters. Playing is an endeavor which I approach with respect and wonder. I am also very passionate about teaching the piano to others. I've found that it requires more than just the ability to play well; it requires a sensitivity to seeing (hearing!) the potential in a student and then using my training, skills, and instinct to bring out the best in them. I have devoted many years to this effort, and many of my lessons are taught with materials that I have developed myself. I find genuine enjoyment in teaching the valuable concepts that I have learned from others and also in finding new ways to communicate them. I'm fortunate to have been taught by some great artists. Stephen Drury of the New England Conservatory is one person who shaped my playing immensely. He helped me to polish my technique a great deal, and I credit my interest in new music entirely to his influence. After graduating from NEC with two piano performance degrees, both with distinction, I went on to get a master's degree in piano performance at Yale University. Boris Berman was my principle instructor there, and it was while in his studio that I studied some repertoire that I had wanted to play for many years. The music of Prokofiev is a particular specialty of Prof. Berman's, and studying the 6th sonata with him was an opportunity I could not pass up. I am a better pianist today because of the time I spent at Yale. Berman's proficiency at teaching the art of the piano helped me to focus and capitalize on my distinctive strengths.

Since 1998 he has studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama completing a BA(Musical Studies) Honours and with the aid of a full scholarship is doing the PGDipMus (Performance) with Jean Hutchison and Fali Pavri. Since 1991 he has performed all over the UK as a soloist and chamber musician in places such as St Leonards School in St Andrews, Kent College, Dundee Chamber Music Club and the RSAMD. Amongst other concertos he has performed Beethoven's First Piano Concerto, Gershwin's Rhapsody In Blue and the Grieg Piano Concerto all to great acclaim. Future engagements include Beethoven's Emperor Concerto (Autumn 2003) and Rachmaninov's Rhapsody on a theme by Paganini (Spring 2004). Dmitri Novgorodsky Assistant Professor of Music Dmitri Novgorodsky was born to a musical family in Odessa, the former USSR. He began to play the piano at age five and was admitted into a special music school for gifted children a year later. By the age of 16, Mr. Novgorodsky had won the First Prize at the Kazakhstan National Piano Competition, and later the Gold Medal of the National Festival of the Arts. After graduating from the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory with high honors, Mr. Novgorodsky immigrated to Israel, where he performed in numerous halls and was awarded the "Extraordinary Pianist" Grant. In 1992, he was offered a full scholarship to study with Professor Boris Berman at Yale School of Music. While at Yale, he received four Distinguished Honorary Awards for the best piano recitals and a Special Faculty Prize to an outstanding pianist in the graduating class. Mr. Novgorodsky is the first Moscow Conservatory graduate in piano performance to have earned the Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the Yale University School of Music. Prior to his appointment at Lawrence, Mr. Novgorodsky served as Assistant Professor of Piano at the University of Wisconsin - Oshkosh and Visiting Assistant Professor of Piano at Grand Valley State University in Michigan.
