Bel Canto Soprano Alyson Cambridge '02 is one of several Conservatory students and recent alumni to have been rewarded for beautiful singing this year. At press time, she had just won the Metropolitan Opera's Regional Auditions, held in Washington, D.C., and will proceed to the Met's National Council Auditions Competition in New York City. After a week of coaching and rehearsing with the Met staff, she and 11 other singers will know the outcome: four winners will be announced.
"I'm thankful for the education I received at Oberlin," says Cambridge, a double-degree graduate who studied voice and sociology at Oberlin. She is working on a master's degree in opera at the Curtis Institute of Music. "The musical academic background at Oberlin prepared me so well for all the things I'm doing now at Curtis," says Cambridge. "And I have Miss Mahy to thank for my success with the Met," she says of her Oberlin teacher, Professor of Voice Daune Mahy. "Everything she taught me in the past five years has meshed well with all I'm learning now from Marlena Malas at Curtis."

Achille Claude Debussy
A chille Claude Debussy, b. Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Aug. 22, 1862, d. Paris, Mar. 25, 1918, was the creator and leading exponent of French musical impressionism. He had his first piano lesson at the age of 9. In 1873, Debussy entered the Paris Conservatory, where he studied piano with Antoine Francois Marmontel and composition with Ernest Guiraud. His cantata L'enfant prodigue won the Prix de Rome in 1884. From 1887 on, Debussy confined his activity to composition, rarely appearing in public as a performer. Although he associated little with musicians, he enjoyed the company of the leading impressionist poets and painters who gathered at the home of the poet Stephane Mallarme. Their influence is felt in Debussy's first important orchestral work, Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun (1892-94), inspired by Mallarme's poem, "L'Apres-midi d'un faune." This work established the style of impressionist music and initiated Debussy's most productive period, which lasted nearly 20 years. During that time he composed the orchestral suites Nocturnes La Mer (1903-05), and

A STUDENT'S GUIDE:
AUDITIONING FOR MUSIC SCHOOL
Jeanne Baxtresser

Not to be changed without the express approval of the author
Across this country, indeed, around the world, an extraordinary event takes place each year between January and March. This event is the audition process for entrance into conservatories and the music departments of colleges and universities. Literally thousands of young musicians who have been practicing their instruments since grade school travel many miles for the opportunity to play for the teachers of these institutions of higher education. We flutists are aware that, because of the extraordinary popularity of our instrument, the competition is daunting. Scores of students apply for schools that may have only a few openings. It is not unusual for me to hear close to a hundred flutists within a two-week period each year. At the end of this year's auditions I felt, as I do each year - profoundly affected by the extraordinary dedication, love and support that surrounds each student. As I don't have the opportunity to express my thoughts and feelings at the time of the auditions, I would like to use the opening of this article to address the parents, the teachers and the students who were involved in the auditions of Spring 2002. I am also addressing the flutists, families and teachers of future auditions. To the Parents
