A Restorative Program upon a Rekindled Piano
by William Thomas Walker
Elon University's renovated Whitley Auditorium had a good turnout of alumni and students for an October 30 recital by the dynamic pianist Leon Bates. This was the first formal concert using a marvelous, newly restored Steinway piano that dates from the 1920s. The sound was full and vibrant throughout its range. Some tapestries or rugs might help tame some reverberation problems above forte.
Bates has played a number of Triangle concerts that conflicted with other series. I finally caught him when he did MacDowell's First Piano Concerto with the N.C. Symphony a few seasons ago. His well-publicized program of working outhe's a weightlifterpays off with the extraordinary quality and power of his playing at forte and above. Among his many distinguished awards is the most recent, the Pennsylvania Artist of the Year, presented earlier this month. His diverse program of Mozart, Schumann, Takemitsu and Barber gave maximum exposure to his mastery of significant music from the classical, romantic, avant-garde and more mainstream modern styles.
Bates' clean and precise articulation easily survived the scrutiny of the bright hall and Mozart's transparent writing in the astonishing early Sonata in A Minor, K.310.

Prudence McDaniel, Cello For over a decade, the Marian Anderson String Quartet has brought inspiration and hope to every segment of American society. With performance venues ranging from the concert stage to soup kitchens and from presidential inaugurals to juvenile correctional facilities, the Quartet continues to uphold its mission to create new and diverse audiences for the field of chamber music. On September 30, 1989, the members of the Marian Anderson String Quartet, then known as the Chaminade Quartet, came together unaware that they would soon change history. In 1991, the Quartet won the International Cleveland Quartet Competition, becoming the first African-American ensemble in history to ever win a classical music competition. To highlight this singular achievement, the members of the Quartet asked permission of the great contralto Marian Anderson to use her name as their own. Miss Anderson responded with heartfelt approval and in a memorable show of gratitude, the newly named Marian Anderson String Quartet played for its legendary namesake and her nephew, conductor James DePreist.

HARRISONBURG – James Madison University’s Masterpiece Season of music, dance, theater and visual art performed and created by professional, faculty and student artists kicks off Sept. 7 with the annual New Dance Festival and concludes April 21, 2002, with an old-fashioned band concert.
The season-opening contemporary dance concerts Sept. 7 and 8 feature guest artists Monica Bill-Barnes, Carli Mareneck and Alan Arnett as well as JMU’s own faculty Suzanne Miller-Corso, Shane O’Hara, Cynthia Thompson and Kate Trammell.
JMU performers also will be featured in two other dance concerts and JMU theater productions and in School of Music concerts by the JMU Wind Symphony, Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Band, Symphony Orchestra and Chorale. JMU’s 33rd annual Holidayfest will feature the JMU Brass Ensemble, Chorale and Symphony Orchestra performing prior to the lighting of the JMU holiday tree on the Quadrangle. In April, JMU’s concert bands – the Concert Band, Symphonic Band, University Band and Wind Symphony – will combine to present “Sunday Afternoon in the Park,” reminiscent of a spring community concert.

Annual concert program offers diversity of styles
By K.C. Jaehnig CARBONDALE, Ill. Mezzo soprano Denyce Graves, jazz French horn player Vincent Chancey and award-winning pianist Leon Bates will make musical magic on the Southern Illinois University Carbondale campus this semester as part of the School of Music's annual concert program. Graves, whom USA Today predicted likely would become "an operatic superstar of the 21st century," will sing at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, in Shryock Auditorium. Chancey, sideman to Sun Ra, Richard Abrams, Lester Bowie, David Murray and others, will play with a jazz ensemble at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, in the Old Baptist Foundation Recital Hall. Bates, known here and abroad for his performances of the works of the romantic composers, will play Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 in C Minor with the Southern Illinois Symphony at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30, in Shryock Auditorium. "When you consider the high level of artistic quality and the extraordinary diversity of musical styles found in just three of our special events this fall Denyce Graves, Vincent Chancey and Leon Bates you can see what a wealth of concerts and recitals we have made available to students, staff and the entire region," said Robert L. Weiss, director of the music school. "I'm also proud that one of those artists, Vincent Chancey, who is one of the few jazz French horn players in the world, is a graduate of SIUC."
