Daniel Barenboim Daniel Barenboim was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1942. He spent the first ten years of his life there until moving to Israel with his family. His mother was his first piano teacher, and his father, who was his only piano teacher up to that moment, continued to teach him until his international breakthrough as a pianist. Daniel Barenboim made his first public appearance as a pianist at the age of 7 in Buenos Aires. Shortly thereafter, he assisted conducting classes with Igor Markevich in Salzburg and studied harmony and composition with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. While still in Argentina, both Artur Rubinstein and Adolf Busch made a huge impression on the young Barenboim. Later, Edwin Fischer and Wilhelm Furtwängler, whom he met in Salzburg, influenced the young artist considerably in his musical development. After having heard him play in 1954, Furtwängler wrote about him: "Daniel Barenboim is a phenomenon". When he was 10 years old, Daniel Barenboim gave his international début as a pianist in Vienna and Rome (1952), and then in Paris (1955) as the soloist of the Societé des Concerts du Conservatiore under the baton of André Cluytens. He then played in London in 1956 with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra under Josef Krips, and finally appeared in New York in 1957, where, only 15 years old, he played with Leopold Stokowski. A little later he played the Berg Chamber Concerto and the Bartók Piano Concerto with Pierre Boulez in Paris and Berlin. From that time on, he regularly toured Europe, the U.S.A. and South America as well as Australia and the Far East.

At a Glance

J. S. Bach’s Das wohltemperierte Clavier is one of the towering achievements not only of music, but of the human mind and imagination, and that reputation has endured for over 250 years. It is also one of the most enjoyable, absorbing, and widely loved achievements of the human mind and imagination. Added to that is its supreme challenge to the artistry of a keyboard virtuoso. Partly for the latter reason, performances of one of the two complete books of the Well-Tempered are uncommon. For the true music lover, hearing a whole book at a sitting is one of those experiences that are not forgotten.

JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book I
Bach was born on March 21, 1685, in Eisenach, and died on July 28, 1750, in Leipzig. He composed Book I of The Well-Tempered Klavier probably between the years 1710 and 1722. The first complete Carnegie Hall performance of Book I of The Well-Tempered Klavier took place in Carnegie Recital Hall (now Weill Recital Hall) on February 1, 1959, with 16-year-old pianist Sheila Minzer. The first performance at Carnegie Hall of any prelude and/or fugue from Book I took place in the Carnegie Lyceum (now Zankel Hall) on March 9, 1899, with 8-year-old pianist Vladimir Shaievitch, who played the Prelude in D Minor, BWV 851.

Daniel Barenboim Daniel Barenboim was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1942, to parents of Jewish-Russian descent. He began piano lessons with his mother at the age of five, continuing with his father, who was his only other teacher. In August 1950, at age seven, he gave his first public concert in Buenos Aires. The Barenboim family moved to Israel in 1952. Over the next four years, the young Barenboim continued to gain international renown as a pianist, making debuts in Vienna and Rome in 1952, in Paris in 1955 and in London in 1956, while simultaneously studying both conducting and composition with the most eminent musical figures in Europe. In 1954 he attended Igor Markevich's conducting classes in Salzburg, where he met Wilhelm Furtwängler and Edwin Fischer, encounters that further shaped his musical development. The following year he studied harmony and composition with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. Mr. Barenboim made his New York debut in 1957 with conductor Leopold Stokowski. His first recordings, produced in 1956, were followed by those of important piano repertoire including Beethoven's piano concertos with Klemperer, Brahms's concertos with Barbirolli, Bartók's concertos with Pierre Boulez, and the complete Mozart piano concertos, as both soloist and conductor. By the mid-1960s, Mr. Barenboim had begun to turn more toward conducting. In 1965 he established a close relationship with the English Chamber Orchestra that lasted for over a decade. As music director of the Orchestre de Paris from 1975 to 1989, he brought contemporary music to the forefront, leading the orchestra in works by Lutoslawski, Berio, Boulez, Henze, Dutilleux, and Takemitsu, among others. He made his opera conducting debut in 1973 with a performance of Mozart's "Don Giovanni" at the Edinburgh International Festival, and in 1981 began a long relationship with the Bayreuth Festival, where he conducted Tristan und Isolde, Parsifal, Die Meistersinger von Nürnburg, and the Ring cycle.

This article originally appeared in The Globe and Mail newspaper, on November 28, 2002. A Maestro Unafraid of a Storm by Colin Eatock Symphony No. 9 In an era that tends to demand specialization from classical musicians, he maintains a dual career as a concert pianist and as the director of two major musical institutions: the CSO and Berlin’s Staatsoper. How does he balance these demands? "I don’t," he replies with a smile. "What I try to do now is to have periods where I exclusively play, and other times when I exclusively conduct. It’s more difficult to go back and forth all the time, physically." He made his debut in his native Buenos Aires 53 years ago at the age of seven. Three years later, his family moved to Israel and the Wunderkind proceeded to take Europe by storm, with recitals in Rome, Vienna, Paris and London. The distinguished German conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler called the boy "a phenomenon," and at the age of 12 he recorded all of Mozart’s piano sonatas. He had his first taste of conducting in 1962, and in 1975 he succeeded Sir Georg Solti as music director of the Orchestre de Paris. effect . And so he does remarkable things. In September, he defied the Israeli government and gave a music class in the West Bank town of Ramallah, for Palestinian students. "For the two hours that I spent with the kids in the school, I reduced the level of hatred completely," he says, warming to the subject. "For many of them it was the first time they thought something positive about anything from Israel. For me it was personally very satisfying, to be able to work with these children. Many of them may be the same ones who are throwing stones at Israeli tanks; maybe they are from the families of the suicide bombers. I have no idea – but for two hours they listened to music and played."

Seen and Heard Concert Review London Review of Books Edward Said Memorial Concert: th August 2004 (MB) Some of the greatest musical events are born out of unlikely partnerships: Hermann Levi and Wagner’s Parsifal was one, the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, a Palestinian-Israeli youth orchestra, is another. Founded in 1999 by Daniel Barenboim and the writer Edward Said their aim was to build a workshop for young musicians from different countries of the Middle East and in so doing foster and encourage mutual understanding between politically opposed peoples. Developing both musical abilities and instilling a spirit of harmony are its core principles, though neither co-founder believed from the outset that the orchestra would, or could, act as a political lever to encourage greater tolerance in a region ravaged by religious and political difference, dissent and war. Indeed, as Daniel Barenboim mentioned in his speech at the end of the concert the orchestra has yet to play in any Middle Eastern country, though elsewhere it is greeted with sold out concert halls (the queue for returns was enormous) and long standing ovations (as at this Barbican concert.) Deriving its name from Goethe’s West-Ostlicher Divan, a synthesis of Islamic and European poetry, and originally located in Weimar, but now Seville – a symbolic place of Jewish and Muslim harmony – it is one of the most profound attempts at addressing the cultural and political futures of divided nationhood in any art form.

MEET THE ARTIST: DANIEL BARENBOIM
By Fred Plotkin
For the gala opening of its 112th season, Carnegie Hall, New York's landmark temple of music, drew upon the artistry of a great orchestra and conductor who played popular music in an unusual way.
Daniel Barenboim, the prodigiously talented conductor and pianist, led the Chicago Symphony in works inspired by Spain. Barenboim, who was born in Argentina and is now an Israeli citizen, is a musician with an internationalist's approach, equally at home playing Beethoven or tangos, conducting symphony orchestras or great opera companies.
This year is one of many anniversaries for Barenboim, who became the music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1991. He was born in Buenos Aires in 1942, sixty years ago November 15, and studied piano with his parents. He made his debut at the age of seven and performed in Europe for the first time 50 years ago, playing in Rome and Vienna in 1952. In that same year, his family immigrated to Israel, where he continued his musical education. He later studied conducting, and appeared for the first time as a conductor in 1962.
Although he is the music director of the Chicago Symphony as well as the Deutsche Staatsoper in Berlin, Barenboim continues a very active career as a pianist. This includes playing concertos while conducting, as well as performing chamber music and accompanying singers such as Cecilia Bartoli in recitals. In 1999, at Carnegie Hall, he pulled off the astonishing feat of conducting and playing the five

Daniel Barenboim plays Brahms' "First Piano Concerto."
GREAT PERFORMANCES : What is it like to perform a monumental work [such] as the Brahms piano concerto in such a monumental place as the Theater of Herodes Atticus, near the Acropolis?
Daniel Barenboim : Well, it's odd because it looks absolutely oversized, as it were, on television, I imagine, as I've never seen it [the program]. But when you are there, it has great intimacy and the sound is so wonderful. The sound is really absolutely wonderful.
The problem with playing outdoors is not what people think, very often: how to get it loud, loud enough. Because there comes a point where, since it is open air, it [the sound] doesn't rebound, and therefore, that's the limit. The problem is when you're playing down, but there one can play very soft.
GP : You wrote in your autobiography that "There are certain pieces, like Brahms ' 'First Concerto,' where the actual physical strain of playing is part of the music." What exactly did you mean by that?
DB : Well, there are some pieces, there are virtuoso pieces, where playing them with aplomb and with great liveliness is part of the music. And other pieces where there is a lot of strain in the emotion, if you like, of the piece, in the structure, in the music, and [to get] that strength you have to, as it were, sometimes fight against the instrument and against the instruments in the orchestra to get the very strong sound.
