Who's Who - Music Styles CSO Classical Conductors ... All Articles Daniel Barenboim
Artistic director of the Chicago Sympony Orchestra, who was hand-picked by Sir Georg Solti to be his successor during the 1991-92 season, will mark his 50th year of performing in the year 2000. Though he has been considered by some an erratic conductor, hs has nonetheless been an orchestra favorite, and is widely recognized as a nearly flawless solo pianist, and has continuously diversified the programs both at Orchestra Hall and the renovated Symphony Center, including new music, jazz, and international events. Barenboim recently renewed his contract with the CSO through the 2002-2003 season, though he will be taking a short sabbatical during the 1998-99 season to spend more time playing the piano (he recently recorded an album of Duke Ellington compositions for Teldec!). Born in Buenos Aires, Barenboim was educated in Israel, made his concert debut in Vienna and Rome in 1952. His conducting debut was with the Philharmonic Orchestra in London in 1967. In 1975, Barenboim took over as music director of the Orchestre de Paris from Sir Georg Solti.

DANIEL BARENBOIM 22 July 2003 9.30pm-10pm A transatlantic superstar, one half of the classical music world's most golden ever couple, and long-time leader of two of the world's foremost orchestras, Daniel Barenboim nevertheless maintains a work schedule that takes him all over the world. Both a pianist and conductor, he says simply, "I like to work and I like variety." Born in Buenos Aires but raised in Israel, Barenboim was the son of two Russian-Jewish piano teachers, and enjoyed a childhood, during which "it never dawned on me that there were people who didn't play". The Barenboims' young prodigy had performed his first concert by the age of seven, and completed his first world tour at 18. Soon Barenboim came to Europe in search of work and was, by the early 60s, settled in London. Barenboim is no stranger to controversy, either professional or personal. With his wife, the magically gifted but tragically fated cellist Jacqueline du Pre, Barenboim enjoyed the most celebrated musical marriage of his generation.

[Index] Daniel Barenboim - The Paradox of the Peacemaker By Norman Lebrecht / November 6, 2002 There is no bigger name or more complex paradox on the modern concert platform than the Argentine-born Israeli pianist-turned-conductor and peace campaigner, Daniel Barenboim. Publicly, Barenboim is a paragon of liberal enlightenment. He has brought together an orchestra of young Israelis and Palestinians in Weimar, beneath the shadow of the Buchenwald death camp, and bravely given recitals in the insurrectionist West Bank towns of Ramallah and Bir Zeit. He has just brought out in America a book of conversations with the New York-based Palestinian academic Edward Said, whom he describes as 'my most intimate friend'. In Jerusalem he declared that prime minister Ariel Sharon would be unwelcome at his concerts. The Israeli right clamoured for his arrest over curfew violations and hecklers in a restaurant called him 'traitor' (his wife, Elena, loyally pelted them with salad vegetables). But when the Madrid government awarded him Spanish citizenship last month, Barenboim insisted that he would continue to travel the world on his restrictive Israeli passport.

Audio Midi LSM About LSM LSM News Distribution Advertising ... Web Search On the Aisle [INDEX] By Philip Anson / November 27, 2000 On the Aisle Daniel Barenboim’s ongoing Perspectives Series at Carnegie Hall offers a total of 16 concerts of his own devising spread over two years. The latest instalment was a four hand piano recital on Nov. 27, 2000, with Barenboim and Romanian pianist Radu Lupu. Commercially, it was a big success. Not only was the hall sold out but the stage was covered with spectators, leaving only a narrow path for the pianists to enter and exit. The concert’s drawing power can be attributed to the two stars, Barenboim and Lupu (each with is own distinct following), as well as the accessible all-Schubert program. The pianists sat side by side on two chairs and switched positions for each of the three pieces. For the opening Variations on an Original Theme in A-flat minor, D. 813 (1824), Barenboim took the top of the keyboard. In this role, he was the designated leader, and Lupu watched him closely. The rather flimsy work has no gripping merit and Barenboim seemed fully occupied sight reading the music in front of him. He ended each variation with the same emphatic flourish, as if to compensate for previous blandness. For Schubert’s Fantasie in F minor, D. 940 (1828), Lupu took the top, and suddenly the music came alive. He produced a gorgeously resonant tone and, unlike Barenboim, he played from inside the music. When the two pianists echoed each other in repeated passages, Lupu impressed one as the more sensitive performer.

from 1964, he often appeared as soloist-conductor in concertos, touring with the ECO in Latin America and the Far East. Debuts with leading orchestras included the London Symphony Orchestra (New York, 1968), Berlin Philharmonic (1969), and New York Philharmonic (1970). Since then he has guest conducted virtually all of the world's leading orchestras. He led London's South Bank Summer Music Festival from 1968 to 1970. His first appearance conducting opera was at the Edinburgh Festival in 1973; his debut opera was Don Giovanni.
In 1967, Barenboim married the brilliant cellist Jacqueline Du Pre , with whom he made several exceptional recital recordings. The couple also participated in a number of excellent concert and documentary films for television directed by Christopher Nupen. Unfortunately, this partnership ended when Du Pre contracted multiple sclerosis, which forced her to end her playing career in 1972. (She died in 1987.)
Barenboim became music director of the Orchestre de Paris in 1975. In 1988, the French Minister of Culture announced Barenboim's appointment as artistic director of the new Bastille Opera in Paris. Sadly, following political squabbles, which included disputes over money and artistic policy, a new Minister of Culture dismissed Barenboim in January, 1989. However, that same month he was named as Sir

http://users.rcn.com/rfinley/movies.htm
Movie Review: HILARY AND JACKIE Yesterday afternoon I went to see the movie "Hilary and Jackie", showing at a cinema in Kendal Square, Cambridge, Massachusetts. It is about the life of the famous British cellist Jacqueline Du Pre. Emily Watson did a marvellous job playing the part of Jacqueline Du Pre. Before filming the movie she studied the cello for a few weeks, and watched film of Jacqueline playing so that she could mimic the energetic bodily movements. She deserves an Oscar for this. The movie describes Jacqueline's childhood, her relationship with her sister, winning musical competitions. Some of her concert tours to Russia and Germany must have been stressful experiences, going to a strange country alone at such a young age. Maybe this had an adverse effect on her. The movie showed how the relationship with her sister became very strained after Hilary got married, and she wanted to share Hilary's husband. Jacqueline met the pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim at a party and married him. There was an amusing scene when she was playing a trio with Daniel and Pinkas Zukerman. They were playing some classical music, and then suddenly started playing some rock music by the "Kinks". The music in the film was wonderful, especially the Schumann Fantasy Pieces for cello and piano, the Faure sonata and of course the Elgar Cello Concerto. Most of the filming was done in and around Liverpool. Jacqueline's debut scene at the Wigmore Hall in London was definitely not in the Wigmore Hall (I have been there many times).

Daniel Barenboim's Biography Daniel Barenboim was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1942. When he was five years old, he began his first piano lessons with his mother, continuing with his father, who remained his only other teacher. In August 1950, when the young artist was just seven, he gave his first official concert in Buenos Aires. Mr. Barenboim received his general education in Israel, where his family moved in 1952. Artur Rubinstein and Adolf Busch, who had already made great impressions on him in Argentina, as well as Edwin Fischer and Wilhelm Furtw ngler, whom he met in Salzburg, became important influences in his development as a musician. He also attended Igor Markevich's conducting classes in Salzburg and studied harmony and composition with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. Mr. Barenboim made his debut as a pianist in Vienna and Rome in 1952, in Paris in 1955, in London in 1956, and in New York in 1957 with Leopold Stokowski. From then on, he made annual concert tours of the United States and Europe. He toured Australia in 1958 and soon became known as one of the most versatile pianists of his generation. His recording activities as a pianist began in 1954 and during the 1960s he recorded the Beethoven piano concertos with Klemperer, the Brahms concertos with Barbirolli, and all the Mozart concertos in the dual role of soloist and conductor with the English Chamber Orchestra. During the same period, Mr. Barenboim started to devote more time to conducting, and, in 1965, he established a close relationship with the English Chamber Orchestra that was to last for more than a decade. Together they played innumerable concerts in England, the United States, and Japan. Mr. Barenboim made his conducting debut in London with the New Philharmonia Orchestra in 1967, Berlin in 1969, and in New York soon after that.

Conductor will deliver Norton Lectures
World-renowned conductor, pianist, and recording artist Daniel Barenboim has been appointed the 2006 Charles Eliot Norton Professor of Poetry at Harvard University, it was announced today (Feb. 3). He joins a list of distinguished arts scholars and professionals who have received the Norton honor since its establishment in 1925. Barenboim will deliver the Charles Eliot Norton Lectures beginning in spring 2006. Currently music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and general music director of the Deutsche Staatsoper, Berlin, Barenboim's career has spanned more than 50 years. He is best known as a musical "bridge builder" and has been honored both for his virtuosity as a musician and for his work toward peace in the Middle East. "It is a great honor," Barenboim said. "I look forward with joy and not without trepidation to exchanging views with Harvard students, speaking about the phenomenon of sound, its relation to silence, and the very nature of music as human expression. A central theme in my musical life has been and continues to be the idea that music is at the nexus of cultural and humanistic disciplines. In my lectures I look forward to exploring the intimate relationship between music, other arts, and the humanities."
