David Barela has had a long and fulfilling love affair with the singing voice. He began studying singing in 1970. He went on to study with the acclaimed baritone Igor Gorin at the University of Arizona. After singing professionally throughout the United States, David decided to turn his focus to the study of the piano. He earned a Master’s degree in piano performance from the University of New Mexico. His most influential piano teacher was the tremendous concert pianist Ozan Marsh who taught at the University of Arizona. David has recorded several professional recordings of classical piano music in conjunction with the DGB Record Label. His recordings have received international acclaim. David is the musical director at Gethsemane Lutheran Church and enjoys coaching professional and non-professional singers in Seattle. The music was composed and variously revised over a period of some ten years through to the early 1850s, when Liszt gave up his itinerant lifestyle and settled as Kapellmeister at Weimar. This was the time when he gave himself over to final, published versions of the piano works that had evolved during the earlier phase of his career. Of this phenomenon the Harmonies represent a particularly important example. However, over the years this music has been indifferently served in the recorded music catalogues. Some of the pieces, and arguably the best ones, have become well known in their own right, while others have remained shrouded in obscurity. Therefore we have every reason to be grateful to David Barela, the pianist and the driving force behind this new recording.
