Bassoon Concertos
Franz Danzi, Johann Baptist Vanhal
John Heard, Bassoon
Camerata Kiev, Alexandra Ostrowski, Conductor

John Heard has performed as bassoon soloist and chamber musician all over the world. He is the founder and bassoonist of the internationally recognized Miami Wind Quintet, a resident ensemble at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio where he is Professor of Bassoon and Chamber Music.
In this recording, he performs bassoon concertos by Franz Danzi and Johann Baptist Vanhal. The Chamber Orchestra is the Camerata Kiev conducted by Alexander Ostroski. The Music of: Isidor Achron, Lazar Saminsky, Ernest Bloch, Conductor: David Amos – The Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Barry Goldsmith, Piano
Three mid-twentieth century composers, two of whom have had little of their music performed or recorded in the last 50 years. Offered here are two piano concertos by Isidor Achron, never before recorded, performed by Barry Goldsmith, a work by Lazar Saminsky, titled, “The Vow,” intended for piano and orchestra, but never completed, then discovered by Barry Goldsmith in a two piano version with sketching including orchestral orchestration. Here it has been completely orchestrated for piano and orchestra and offered as a newly discovered work. The third composer is Ernest Bloch. His composition, “Helvetia, A Land of Mountains and its Peoples,” is one of his least known works and has rarely been heard outside of Switzerland. It is the last major work by this Swiss-American composer to be recorded.

AN INTRODUCTORY COMMENT ON THE MUSIC CRITICISM OFFERED HERE
Beethoven at the Piano
As lay people, we can find expert comments on the works of classical music in books, periodical publications and in CD brochure comments. These may be rendered from a variety of viewpoints: from that of the biographer, that of the musicologist, that of the music critic or that of the active musician. Here, with respect to Beethoven's 32 piano sonatas, first of all, I want to list the relevant literature that I found in the bibliographical listings of the books I consulted in creating this section. Besides Thayer's standard biography, the authors I consulted are, in alphabetical order: Barry Cooper (Beethoven: 2000), Joachim Kaiser (Die 32 Klaviersonaten Beethovens und ihre Interpreten: 1975), William Kinderman (Beethoven: 1995) und Maynard Solomon (Beethoven: 1977 und 1998). The following list is arranged in the alphabetical order of the authors of the works I found and lists the titles of the works written by them, particulars with respect to each publication and by what above-noted authors they have been listed in their respective bibliographical sections. http://www.badura-skoda.com/printbio.htm
Biography PAUL BADURA-SKODA is one of the most important pianists of our time. A legendary artist who has been heard in all the world´s greatest concert halls, and for years was the pianist who had the largest number of records available in the market. His musical personality is characterized by complete immersion in music, a passionate search for the essential, and a sense of artistic responsibility. It soon becomes evident to any listener that he loves music with every part of his being.
In 1945, Badura-Skoda entered the Vienna Conservatory, and two years later won first prize in the Austrian Music Competition and a scholarship which allowed him to study with Edwin Fischer. These years laid the foundation for Badura-Skoda´s artistic future. In 1949, Wilhelm Furtwängler and Herbert von Karajan became aware of Badura-Skoda´s outstanding talent, and invited him to play concerts. Practically overnight the young viennese became a world-famous artist.
Since then, Badura-Skoda has been a regular and celebrated guest at the most important music festivals, and a soloist with the world´s most prestigious orchestras. In addition to Furtwängler and von Karajan, he has collaborated with such renowned conducters as George Szell, Karl Böhm, Lorin Maazel, Zubin Metha, Sir Charles Mackerras, Sir Georg Solti, Kent Nagano and John Eliot Gardiner.

When Falla started working on this composition he gave it the title "Nocturnes" which still indicates the atmosphere of the three sections. Most pianists and conductors play the work in a well structured manner and even sometimes with a certain straightforwardness. Curzon and Jorda however work together in a fine tuned atmospheric recording. Jorda is a conductor from the old school and he takes time for phrasing and subtle dynamic variations and so achieves a sense of sultry and mysteriousness, the air bearing heavy scents. It is a rendition which was hardly experienced before (and after, I must say). This performance shows once more all too clear how crucial the cooperation is of all the musicians involved. A true treasure that was well recorded with the piano well embedded in the orchestra.
High Fidelity Beethoven
The liner notes of Westminster WL 5075 deal extensively with the structure and the nature of Beethoven's Op. 111 and Op. 2 No. 2. There are however no data about the pianist Kurt Appelbaum with whom Westminster started a complete cycle of Beethoven Sonatas. From six discs produced only the one containing Sonatas Nos. 9 and 24 was well received (WL 5090). Westminster apparently abandoned the project and substituted Appelbaum for Paul Badura-Skoda but Demotte says that the wisdom of this choice was to be questioned because Badura-Skoda was much too young.

Badura-Skoda claims his "conversion" to the lighter, more fluent action of period instruments came in 1948, after a recital by Isolde Ahlgrimm. The more transparent articulation, the fluid staccato effects he achieves, compensate for the loss of sonorous weight the modern piano provides. I I am particularly impressed by Badura-Skoda in the tricky, often surprising antics of the C Major Sonata, K. 309, where Mozart often trades the top line with its accompaniment, as well as using daring, irregular metric feet. He takes the usually slow, elegant Adagio at a slightly more Andante pace. The broken-style of K. 284 holds a world of digital demands, including stunning orchestral effects, as well as variations that reveal Mozart's own notions of ornaments. The Rondos in these recordings really shimmer, the middle and upper registers of the Schantz keyboard's enjoying a definable 'ping' that sets this recording apart. Besides the immensely spirited Sonata in A, K. 311, an old favorite, the real find in this survey is the little, dark Allegro in G Minor, K. 312 (590d), written around 1790, that has all the imploded fury of the C Minor Concerto, K. 491. Its use of canon clearly hearkens to Mozart's late studies of Bach. This disc is thoroughly musical in every way.

Pat Hazell Revisits Childhood in The Wonder Bread Years
Comedian Pat Hazell remembers a simpler time. A time when green army men ruled, Etch-A-Sketch was king and Kool-Aid stands were big business. Take a nostalgic field trip with Hazell's one-man show (and tell), The Wonder Bread Years, coming Sept. 8, 9, 10 and 12 to the Johnny Carson Theater for six performances as part of the Lied Center for Performing Arts' season. Performance times are 8 p.m. on Sept. 8 and 9, 7 and 9 p.m. on Sept. 10, and 2 and 6 p.m. on Sept. 12. A native of Omaha, Pat Hazell caught the attention of Jerry Seinfeld when they were both performing at the Comedy & Magic Club in Los Angeles in 1986. Hazell then toured as Seinfeld's opening act. Hazell was a writer on Seinfeld's Emmy award-winning television show and has also written for "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman," "Love and War" and Showtime's "Aspen Comedy Special." Hazell's comedy play Bunk Bed Brothers was developed into the television show, "American Pie," which was a mid-season replacement series. Hazell has also made seven appearances on "The Tonight Show." He can currently be seen in advertising for Baker's Supermarkets.
