No wonder Warren Demotte characterized the Remington record of the Schubert Sonata Opus posthume as: "Demus is in excellent form, technically and interpretively; it is a pleasure to aknowledge the maturity of his playing. This is one of Remington's best records."
And about the Chopin Balades he wrote: "Demus promises much for the future in his sensitive performances of the Third and Fourth Balades."
About the Beethoven Sonatas: "Demus, in his early twenties, has astonishing poetic maturity."
Demotte on Schubert's Moments Musicaux: "Demus's playing is warm and caressing, characteristics that are especially attractive in such a young pianist."

Musicians and Chess
Some great players have been first-class musicians. For example Taimanov (1926-) was an International Grandmaster (1952) and one of the world's best ten from about 1950-1956 at the same time as being a concert pianist. Conversely Adolf Brodsky (1851-1929), a first-class chessplayer, gave the first performance of Tchaikovsky's violin concerto after its dedicatee declared it unplayable, and later became conductor of the Halle Orchestra and then the Principal of Manchester Collegue of Music. Those who have reached the top in both fields include Philidor (1726-1795), reputedly the best player of his time and a talented composer, and Rudolf Heinrich Willmers (1921-78) who played music and composed chess problems. While playing Schumann's 'Carnival' in a piano recital in Copenhagen, Willmers stopped suddenly, wrote on his cuff, and then continued. He explained afterwards that he had been struggling for a week to solve a difficult problem when the solution came to him in a flash. 'I had to jot it down to get it out of my head and let me concentrate entirely on my playing.' If you look through your games collections you may come across.

CLASSICAL EMBELLISHING / IMPROVISING / CADENZAS
Throughout keyboard history, great composers such as Bach, Beethoven and Chopin have also been master improvisers. We seek to rekindle this important tradition by offering this prize for the best demonstrations of classical embellishing and/or improvising. Please note that in this category the word "classical" is meant in the broad sense (classical as opposed to jazz/pop/rag) not classical as in "Classic period" only. Performances need not demonstrate literal improvisation. At the least, however, performances should sound spontaneous, as if improvised on the spot. For excellent discussions on classical embellishing (with instructive examples), see the following articles by John Salmon: http://www.music.sc.edu/ea/Keyboard/PPF/3.1/3.1.PPFka.html http://www.pianofestival.org/editorial.htm Extemporaneousness in classical music is especially appropriate in music that has repeats. In Baroque music this would be particularly effective in dances. It is especially instructive to study J.S. Bach’s own methods of embellishing, as revealed in the Sarabande movements of his 2nd and 3rd English Suites . In both Sarabandes Bach presents a simple version, followed by a more ornamented version. Presumably this was to show how to embellish on the repeats. A comparison of his simple and ornamented versions is highly recommended. You can listen to Dr. Robert Levin, Harvard Professor and one of today's top experts in classical improvisation, perform and discuss these Sarabandes on an

INTERPRETING BACH AT THE KEYBOARD

BUY NOW AmazonUK AmazonUS $41.50 (content page views available) Paul Badura-Skoda is a well-known pianist, fortepianist and harpsichordist. He has recorded many discs of music by Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert, and has also recorded Bach’s partitas. This book is a presentation of the issues involved in performing and interpreting Bach’s keyboard music. Badura-Skoda draws on his 40 years of experience playing Bach, as well as a great deal of research by himself and others. There are many issues around Bach’s keyboard music, beginning with the age-old question of which instrument to play it on: harpsichord or piano (or clavichord, or fortepiano, or lute-harpsichord…). Badura-Skoda shows himself to not be a fundamentalist in this matter, but presents both sides of the arguments about this and other performance practice issues.

Brahms

by David Dubal
Johannes Brahms (1833-1897), the great master from Hamburg, was deeply grounded in piano technique by Eduard Marxsen, Hamburg's leading teacher and a formidable pianist. Brahms made his debut as a pianist at the age of fourteen, and continued to play periodically in public. In his earlier years he performed a massive literature, including the Beethoven Eroica and Diabelli Variations, Bach's Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue, Schumann's Fantasy and Sonatas (giving the premiere of Schumann's F minor Sonata, Op. 14 in 1863). He also gave the world premieres of his own D minor and B flat major Piano Concerti.
All of Brahms' piano music makes considerable demands on the player. Very little of it can be called conventionally 'easy' to play, most of it is extremely difficult, and the pianism is awkward and often jolting, not because of lack of pianistic skill, but because of his dense musical demands and unusual hand placement. Brahms is ever the contrapuntist and his cross-rhythms and endlessly inventive positioning of arpeggio figurations deep into bass territory make his music difficult to memorise.
This disc presents Brahms throughout his career from the Sonata in F minor, composed when he was 20, to the samples of his late music which he called "the cradle songs of my old age." Sending them one by one to his beloved Clara Schumann, he told her that "an audience of even one is too many."

PIANIST PERFORMS TONIGHT FOR DIEHN SERIES
One of the world's foremost pianists, Paul Badura-Skoda, will perform for the F. Ludwig Diehn Concert Series at 8 p.m. Monday, March 19, in Chandler Recital Hall of the Diehn Fine and Performing Arts Center. The free program includes works by Mozart, Beethoven, Martin and Schumann.
Considered by many one of the most important pianists of our time, Badura-Skoda has had an illustrious career. Two years after entering the Vienna Conservatory in 1945 he won first prize in the Austrian Music Competition. One of his latest honors came in 1993 when he became "Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur."
His entire career has been marked by superlatives. In 1939, conductors Wilhelm Furtwängler and Herbert von Karajan became aware of his outstanding talent and invited him to play concerts. Practically overnight, the young Viennese pianist became a
world-famous artist. After a spectacular debut at the Salzburg Festival, he played to a sold-out house at his New York debut in 1953. Since then, Badura-Skoda has become a regular and celebrated guest at the most important music festivals.
Conductors Furtwängler, Joseph Krips, Karl Böhm, Hans Knappertsbusch, Hermann Scherchen, Artur Rodzinsky, Lorin Maazel, George Szell, Sir Charles Mackerras and Sir Georg Solti, and violinist David Oistrakh, have been among his famous partners.
