Composer Links January 6-13, 2003 Wladyslaw Szpilman: The Real Pianist Born in 1911, Wladyslaw Szpilman studied the piano at the Warsaw Conservatory under A. Michalowski and subsequently at the Academy of Arts (Akademie der Kuenste) in Berlin under Arthur Schnabel and Leonid Kreutzer. He also studied composition under Franz Schreker. In 1933, he returned to Warsaw where he quickly became a celebrated pianist and a composer of both classical and popular music. From 1945 to 1963 he held the position of Director of Music at Polish Radio. He also performed as a soloist and with the violinists Bronislav Gimpel, Roman Totenberg, Ida Haendel, Tadeusz Wronski and Henryk Szeryng. In 1963, he and Gimpel founded the Warsaw Piano Quintet with which Szpilman performed world-wide until 1986. During these years he composed several symphonic works and about 500 songs, including some children's songs, as well as music for radio plays and film. Especially his film scores and songs become very popular in Poland before the 2nd WW. He is currently Professor of Violin at the Royal Academy of Music in London and Winterthur Conservatory in Switzerland. Anatoly Resnikovsky Anatoly Resnikovsky is a Professor of the St.Petersburg Conservatory, an Honorable Guest Professor of the Petrozavodsk Conservatory (Carelia) and Kerava Music College (Finland). He is one of the foremost specialists in the world in the correction and development of violin technique. He studied at the St.Petersburg Conservatory and received his Doctor of Performing Arts degree under Professor Veniamin Sher, one of the last representatives of the famous Leopold Auer school (among his pupils are such well-known performers as Vladimir Spivakov and the late Viktor Liberman). Anatoly Resnikovsky performs extensively in East- and West-Europe and South Korea. He collaborates with contemporary composers and has given many first performances of their works. Numerous compositions of leading St.Petersburg composers are dedicated to Anatoly Resnikovsky.

It was about the time I hit the exhibition's "Synthetic Sound" gallery. There, a muted racket arose from a couple of experimental sound-and-image pieces by, on the one hand, Oskar Fischinger, a German artist who in the 1930s photographed scrolls of abstract drawings onto the optical soundtracks of motion picture film to create new audio-visual experiences, and, on the other, by brothers John and James Whitney, whose "Five Film Exercises" of the 1940s produced musical tones when film, on which wave patterns had been drawn by an array of pendulums, was run through a projector. An image from John Whitney's 1968 film piece "Permutations," part of "Visual Music" at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. The exhibit melds audio and visual, depicting what images sound like and what sounds look like.

Selected comparison: Hill (9/92) (UNIC) DKPCD9122/3 I was a bit reluctant, on the principle of not looking gift horses in the mouth, to subject this outstandingly bargain-priced set to close comparisons with the obvious touchstone, Yvonne Loriod's recording of the Vingt regards , which arrived by the same post (see below). I was so struck by Austbo's account of the opening movement, however, that I cautiously tried a direct comparison and found at once a greater readiness on the part of the Norwegian pianist to allow the music time to register and resonate. At times he seemed to me to be making more sheerly beautiful sounds than Loriod, projecting grander lines in passages requiring massive tone, differentiating colour with even more precision. In terms of sheer fiery virtuosity (the 'oriental dance' of "Regard de l'esprit de joie", for example) Loriod is sometimes Austbo's superior, but in passages requiring stillness, quiet and breathless suspense, he often has more patience than she does, and the result is an even more beautiful account of "Le baiser de l'enfant Jesus" than hers, and a still more raptly reflective one of the penultimate meditation "Je dors, mais mon coeur veille". Part of this, but only part, is the superiority of Naxos's recording. Much though I enjoy the bassy softness of Erato's sound while listening to Loriod, there is no doubt that Austbo's piano sounds more like a piano, and his recording has a greater dynamic range than hers. I would be giving the newcomer a pretty warm welcome even if I found it marginally inferior to Loriod's, but I find it every bit her equal. Austbo has something of Peter Hill's delicate subtlety in the many quieter pages and in the big ones he is easily a match for Loriod's steely power. An extremely impressive achievement, in short, and at this price an essential part of any Messiaen-admirer's collection.
