Vladimir Ashkenazy
Honorary Chairman
Vladimir Ashkenazy has agreed to be Honorary Chairman of the Greater Princeton Steinway Society. "It is a worthy cause. I hope I can be of help to your wonderful activities. Steinway is the only piano on which the pianist can do everything he wants and everything he dreams," said Ashkenazy in accepting the chairmanship. A premiere pianist, chamber musician and conductor, Ashkenazy graduated from the Moscow University and won top prizes in the Chopin, Queen Elisabeth, and Tchaikovsky competitions. A guest conductor, Ashkenazy has appeared with many of the world's major orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, Philadelphia, Cleveland and Concertgebouw. He recently conducted concerts in Carnegie Hall with the Deutsches Symphony-Orchestra Berlin, the Kennedy Center and at the Salzburg Festival. His many recordings with Decca Records include the complete sets of concertos and other works of Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, and Scriabin. The Grove Dictionary of Music describes his pianism as, "the finest of the younger pianists. His playing combines intellectual probity with warmth and sincere feeling, and is marked by exceptional sensitivity to tone colour and delicacy of fingerwork."

Born: Jul 6, 1937 in Gorki, Russia
Genre: Orchestral Music, Keyboard Music, Concerto, Symphony
Vladimir Ashkenazy's parents were both professional pianists; they taught him piano beginning at age six. His father was a non-observant Russian Jew, and his mother was a Russian of Eastern Orthodox faith. After his debut in Moscow at the tender age of eight, Ashkenazy was subsequently put on track for a musical career and enrolled in Moscow's Central Music School. His regular piano teacher there was Anaida Sumbatian.
He took up the conductor's baton in the 1970s and increased his activity in that sphere steadily, becoming principal guest conductor of the Philharmonic Orchestra of London (1981), music director of the Royal Philharmonic of London (1987), principal guest conductor of the Cleveland Orchestra (1987) and chief conductor of the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra (1989). Between 1998 and 2003, he was the Czech Philharmonic's chief conductor, and takes up leadership of Japan's NHK Symphony Orchestra in the 2004-05 season, while continuing as music director of the European Union Youth Orchestra. With the end of the Soviet Union, he has made triumphant return concerts in Russia.

2 CDs [135:28] budget-price by Evan Stephens Rachmaninov’s piano concerti have been received in about as many different ways as possible by the classical critics of this century. The First (Opus 1, his graduation project from the St. Petersburg Conservatory) was lauded and respected by pianists and listeners alike. The Second (Opus 18, written with the aid of psychologist Nikolai Dahl after a lengthy depression) was even more popular. The Third (Opus 30) puzzled listeners and pianists alike, who were dismayed by the technical difficulties and the lush, chromatic music fitted over the enormous scale of 45 minutes. The Fourth (Opus 40) was generally trashed as incomplete, poorly scored, and simply bizarre. Yet all four works have remained in the concert repertoire as staples (with the possible exception of the Fourth, which has its staunch apologists and even stauncher critics) since their inceptions. et. al
