A disappointing start to the evening. Things improved somewhat with Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G, played with great passion and precision by Helene Grimaud; this wonderful pianist combines great intelligence with a dazzling technique, her incredibly nimble fingers making short work of even the most difficult arpeggios. Unlike her conductor, she had total control, flare and rhythmic vitality. Unfortunately, sometimes her playing was engulfed by the hall's notoriously dry acoustic, and on occasion even drowned out by the orchestra’s excessively loud playing, due entirely to Ashkenazy's bombastic conducting. Being a renowned pianist himself, fellow feeling at least should have produced a far more sympathetic and sensitive accompaniment.

An enthusiastic supporter of the Association's mission, he is one of its founding Life Members.    Vladimir Ashkenazy has been an active exponent of Prokofiev's works and has made many recordings both as conductor and pianist. These include all the piano concertos, symphonies no.1,5,6, and 7, Symphony-Concerto for Cello, Cinderella (complete ballet and excerpts for piano solo), Overture on Jewish Themes, Autumnal Sketch for small orchestra op.8, Waltz and Scherzo from The Love for Three Oranges, Piano Sonatas no. 6, 7 and 8, pieces for piano from Romeo and Juliet, Waltz from War and Peace for solo piano and Violin Sonatas no.1 and 2.    He studied piano in Moscow and won several major international prizes, culminating in the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 1962. But Charles Amirkhanian, executive director of the Other Minds festival, has been beating the drum for his other works for years, and this vibrant, entertaining disc (available at www.otherminds.org ) makes a strong case for at least some of Antheil's string quartets. The best music the first two string quartets and a suave bauble called "Lithuanian Night" dates from the composer's time in Paris in the 1920s, and it boasts punchy rhythms and an engagingly sassy approach to counterpoint; only the Third Quartet, from 1948, sounds fat and torpid. The Del Sol String Quartet plays like gangbusters throughout. Joshua Kosman. GEORGE ANTHEIL MUSIC FOR STRING QUARTET DEL SOL STRING QUARTET OTHER MINDS BRYN TERFEL Bass-baritone Bryn Terfel's newest recital disc of English songs is a grab bag of almost comic omnivorousness; aside from a bevy of short Housman settings by Arthur Somervell, none of the program's dozen composers is represented by more than three songs. Yet the range is not too broad there is a distinctive feel to the folk-drenched song repertory produced during the first half of the 20th century and Terfel helps by putting his personal stamp on the entire proceedings. Accompanied with alluring vigor by pianist Malcolm Martineau, Terfel offers readings that are at once capacious and detailed, with phrases that are no less precisely calibrated for being so bold and swaggering. In the "Three Salt-Water Ballads" by Frederick Keel, Terfel plays the sea dog to the hilt, with enjoyably hammy effects; in three of Britten's folksong arrangements, his singing is sensitive and true.
