Vladimir Ashkenazy Rachmaninov: Piano Transcriptions (Decca) Transcription - arranging a piece of existing music for a different instrument - has a long and illustrious history. In an age before recorded music, transcriptions enabled music lovers to more easily access orchestral and operatic repertoire and virtuosos to display their wit and ferocious keyboard talent. Bach metamorphosed simple hymn tunes into complex chorale preludes for organ; Liszt realised Schubert songs, among a multitude of other composers works, as florid fantasies. CD Review
26 June 2004
Saturday 26 June 2004 9:00-13:00 (Radio 3) Andrew McGregor presents a special 2000th edition, including reminiscences of over 50 years of CD Review, and its predecessor Record Review, plus a last chance to vote for your disc of the century. In Building a Library, Peter Hill recommends a version of a 20th-century classic, Stravinsky's ballet The Rite of Spring. There's a round-table discussion prompted by Norman Lebrecht's 'rock-solid prediction that the year 2004 will be the last for the classical record industry'. Taking part are Peter Alward (President, EMI Classics), Chris Craker (Head of Classics, The Sanctuary Group), the pianist Joanna MacGregor, who also owns her own record label, SoundCircus, and Harriet Smith (Editor, BBC Music Magazine). There's an interview with Vladimir Ashkenazy about his long career on record as pianist and conductor, including his recent recording of piano music by Shostakovich. Plus, at 12.15pm, a chance to hear the CD voted Listeners' Disc of the Century.
