Brief History of the Third Concerto
The Third (as it will be known for the rest of this article) was completed as a major composition which Rachmaninoff would "show off" in New York in 1909 during his first concert tour of USA. He wrote the work in the peace of his family's country estate, Ivanovka, and it was completed on 23 September 1909 (Julian Calendar).

    Biography: Martha Argerich
Martha Argerich (born June 5, 1941) is a pianist of Argentinian origin. Argerich was born in Buenos Aires , and initially studied with her mother who was a piano teacher. She gave her debut concert at the age of eight, playing a concerto by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart . The family moved to Europe in 1955, and Argerich studied with Friedrich Gulda in Switzerland . She later studied with Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli . In 1957, she won two major piano competitions within a few weeks, and her career as a professional pianist was launched. Argerich took the musical world by storm in 1960 at the International Frederick Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw . One of her performances in that winning campaign was a defiantly confident reading of Chopin's C major Etude (Op. 10, #1), a piece that Vladimir Horowitz famously refused to perform live. In the same year, she made her first recording, including works by Frédéric Chopin Johannes Brahms Maurice Ravel Sergei Prokofiev , and Franz Liszt . A few years later, in 1965, she recorded Chopin's Sonata 3, Polonaise Opus 53, and other short works. Her technique is considered amongst the most formidable of her time, inviting comparison with

With the release of four CDs under the Martha Argerich Presents... banner, EMI joins the legendary pianist in a project to bring four gifted young pianists before the public. They are Korean-born Dong-Hyek Lim, Cuban-born Mauricio Vallina, Evgheny Brakhman from Russia and Alexander Mogilevsky from the Ukraine. In a statement, Ms. Argerich said, "Supporting talented young artists and helping them gain recognition is an integral and essential part of my work. This is why I hope that the four young pianists introduced on these CDs will now find an audience more quickly and that their talents will be discovered by agents and impresarios. There are many gifted young musicians in the world and there are also many people who could help them as they pursue their legitimate and worthwhile artistic training. Unfortunately, however, the musical establishment is increasingly less inclined to take risks, which is why I am so grateful to EMI for having agreed to finance this project."

RARE INTERVIEW WITH ARGERICH BY DEAN ELDER
    Clavier/September 1979

ELDER: ... An interview with Martha Argerich is an exploration of a woman who loves to laugh and who yearns for the verdant and azure spaces of a more natural life.
[In 1978, Dean Elder had just heard her performance of the Mozart Concerto in C, OP. 25, K503, at Avery Fisher Hall, at about the time EMI captured the broadcast-performance in Amsterdam released in mid-2000.
In describing the concert, he wrote, "...for Martha Argerich is about to play and prove that not all of Paradise has been lost."
"... She is considered by cognoscenti and public to be in the front rank of her generation. Few pianists are viewed with such awed admiration by their colleagues. Few pianists receive such frenzied ovations."

[Elder on the Mozart concerto that night]
"The performance of Mozart's great Concerto in C, K. 503 is exciting and note-perfect. She plays Mozart with a beautiful, silvery, limpid tone... "The New York Philharmonic conducted by Raphael Kubelik plays superbly. It is lovely Mozart, like a bird song, fresh and unpredictable. Argerich plays freely, effortlessly. Broken octaves ripple, turns are tossed off. The vehemence of her octaves and the brilliance of her passage work are as striking as her immense rhythmic vitality and feeling for tonal values.

Why does such a mixed audience, younger than usual, come to the Theatre des Champs-Elysees? Why does one go to a concert? To sacrifice ourselves to a social rite ? No, that time has long since passed. One goes to concert, one listens to music, because it helps to 'live'... beautiful recording
I like Argerich's Rachmaninoff, so I thought to try her Chopin, and I was not disappointed. She plays the Chopin concerto with both verve and lilting melody. It is a delight to listen to. The orchestra is up to Argerich's standards, as is the quality of the recording. It was hard to believe that this was an analog recording from the 1960s. The music of the Chopin concerto was more to my taste than the Liszt, but I still liked it very much; they are a good pairing on the CD. Definition of self-recommending?

the most charged, energetic and riveting account of R's PC#3wonderfully coupled with Tchaikovsky. Cons Soon Out of Print, technically not always perfect The Bottom Line If you need to be turned on to classical music, go no further. A tour de force, an orgiastic experience... 60 minutes to remember! Full Review Hyperbole is deserved for this record. Argerich is wild and amazing in the Rachmaninov Piano Concerto - and there is a legitimate argument for the case of her "Rock #3" being the 'best' recording out there. Her Tchaikovsky 1st Piano Concerto makes this CD such a lusciously rambunctious romantic powerhouse album that it is just a delight. Both pieces are so over-the-top romantic and stormy that it's almost funny - but the quality of either forbids laughter. alternate versions (of the same performance) If you get this recording for Argerich's Rachmaninov (the more stupendous performance on this disc) you have other, better choices. I'll link to them.

Musical Performance Recording Quality Overall Enjoyment Some years ago I attended a performance of Chopin's Piano Concerto No.1, a work I don't greatly care for, given by a young female pianist. At the interval, after the concerto, one of our self- appointed local culture vultures came up to me and confided that "women can't really play Chopin because they don't have the muscular strength." As the old Sunday scandal-sheet reporters used to say, "I made an excuse and withdrew," because I really didn't have the energy to regale her with the legion of great female pianists, beginning in the 19th century with Venezuelan Teresa Carreño, known as the "Valkyrie of the keyboard," and continuing down to the present day. For almost four decades now (I know it is ungentlemanly of me to point it out), the reigning queen of the keyboard has surely been Martha Argerich. Since her spectacular debut recital disc in 1961 (currently available on DG's Originals imprint), Argerich has been a formidable pianistic presence. Her triumph in the 1965 Chopin Competition underlined her arrival on the world stage. In 1965, Argerich recorded this recital in London for EMI. Shortly thereafter she was signed to another label and contractual problems have prevented these recordings from seeing the light of day until now.
