Main March 21, 2004 Martha Argerich and Prokofief I discovered that my favourite pianist, Martha Argerich in her international debut recital at the age of 19 played an incredible piece by Prokofief - the Tocatta Opus 11 - that he composed and played at the age of 23 in order to gain attention and establish himself in the music world. Its a really dramatic piece - I heard it last Sunday played by another great pianist John Lill . He filled the Royal Festival Hall effortlessly playing both hands at each end of the piano so hard and fast it was breathtaking. When first played in the early 20th century listeners thought this piece sounded dischordant, brash and unharmonic. Now to me the harmonies and rhythms are exciting and complex but not unusual any more. Martha Argerich plays everything I have heard her on strongly and clearly and yet with deep expression. The honor is a precious one considering that only Japan has an Argerich festival and that the pre-eminent Argentine pianist cancelled her Israel concert in favor of the Taipei venue. Last year, after three cancelations, Argerich finally arrived in Taipei for the first time and was impressed by the hospitality with which she was greeted. (Natalia Bazzi) By Natalia Bazzi Posted May 1, 2003 The term toccata (an Italian word) means "to play," and its purpose is to make the performer show off his or her skills. Johann Sebastian Bach Toccata BWV 911. Partita BWV 826. English Suite No. 2 BWV 807 This Toccata in C minor BWV 911 has basically two large sections. The first one, has a free and fast introduction with ascending and descending scales, and a slow Ricercare. Ricercare (Italian) means "to search thoroughly" and it is a kind of composition always written in contrapuntal style (many voices singing independently from each other at the same time). The second part of Bach's C minor Toccata is another much longer and faster Ricercre. The theme of this Ricercare (theme is the main melody) sounds popular, simple, and very beautiful; for the first section of this theme Bach uses arpeggio. After the second Ricercare, the piece ends in a free and harmonic style, which is reminiscent of the beginning of the Toccata. The Argentinian pianist Martha Argerich articulates the Ricercare theme in a way which is always heard in its first occurence. Moreover, she changes the color of the theme depending on which register (low-high) it appears. The inherent rhythmic energy of Bach's music is highlighted by Argerich's clear articulation and vitality.
