Here, simply and assuredly, is one of the most magisterial talents in the entire history of piano playing, so that this 11-disc box and tribute (its contents forever journeying from shelf to CD player) proudly stands next to parallel recorded celebrations of Rachmaninov, Cortot and Horowitz – immortal examples of re-creative genius. Then, I am reminded of how Argerich’s favoured partners (here, Freire and Economou as well as her conductors) are propelled into a commitment that must surely astonish them in retrospect ... Gramophone NB: This recording refers to an earlier release of the Ravel and Prokofiev Concerto performances included in the box set pictured above. There have been others to match the bustle and brilliance of Argerich's Prokofiev, her coloristic range, her drive, her flashiness, her straining at the leash. But I'm not sure I could name anyone who has so satisfyingly combined all those qualities, who has given us such a rocket-launched recapitulation in the first movement, such circus-routine vividness in the following variations (Prokofiev grew up in a Russia where 'circusization of the arts' was one of the 'in' concepts), or such monstrous, hyperbolic fairy-tale imagery in the finale, and all done with the most engaging reckless abandon. The Ravel Concerto is another bundle of energy. I had forgotten how miraculous is the blend and interplay of piano and orchestra, and how ecstatically Argerich weaves around the cor anglais restatement in the slow movement.

Every seat in the hall was occupied and the feeling of anticipation was intense, especially since this same duo had been scheduled to play in the same venue two years previously and had cancelled for reasons of health. We were witnessing the magic moment of heightened anticipation when the house lights were lowered and the stage door opened, just before the audience erupted into a firestorm of applause and roared greetings such as few classical musicians ever enjoy. As pianists Martha Argerich and Nelson Freire appeared, the event seemed to have something in common with ancient scenes in the Roman Coliseum, except that it wasn’t two gladiators doing battle with lions, but two pianists of cult hero status emerging to do battle with two Steinway concert grands and treating their fans to an evening of piano music that alternated between heroic drama and sublime serenity. On how her interest in music started I was at the kindergarten in a competitive program when I was two years and eight months. I was much younger than the rest of the children. I had a little friend who was always teasing me; he was five and was always telling me, "You can't do this, you can't do that." And I would always do whatever he said I couldn't. Once he got the idea of telling me I couldn't play the piano. (Laughter) That's how it started. I still remember it. I immediately got up, went to the piano, and started playing a tune that the teacher was playing all the time. I played the tune by ear and perfectly. The teacher immediately called my mother and they started making a fuss. And it was all because of this boy who said, "You can't play the piano." Asked if she was forced to practice Later, yes I was and I hated it. I didn't want to be a pianist in the first place. I still don't really want to be, but it is the only thing that I can do more or less. (Laughter) I wanted to be a doctor! I love very much to play the piano, but I don't like to be a pianist. I don't like the profession. And when one plays, of course, it is important to practice. She covers it all, from Brahms to Prokofiev to Ravel. The Chopin Scherzo No. 3 is taken at a breathtaking speed, of course I wouldn't know, since Argerich's was the first I ever heard. When I hear any other performance of the scherzo, I am immediately struck by the lack of movement, and I begin to miss Argerich. Her Liszt B Minor Sonata is not a show piece, despite its technical difficulties. There is an obvious epic quality about her performance of it that has been proved time and time again to be peerless. Disadvantages: Appearances in US much too rare, but Martha, rightly so, refuses to tour the world like a performing monkey . Recommend to potential buyers: yes Full review Martha Argerich was slated to perform Chopin’s Piano Concerto No.1 at Carnegie Hall on April 8, 2002. That is, until some two weeks before the concert. Word got out that Martha had changed her mind: she was going to play the Schumann A minor Piano Concerto instead. Well, no matter. Martha could play the “Happy Birthday” song, the crowds would still show up just for the chance to be in her rarefied presence.
