EMI Classics has released a number of recordings by martha argerich, Liszt andProkofiev with a group of musicians including the pianist Nelson Freire.

MARTHA ARGERICH
At the age of sixteen, Argerich won the Geneva International Music Competition and the Busoni Competition. In 1964 she toured Western Europe and Poland before making her London debut in November that year. In 1965 she won the Seventh Warsaw International Chopin Competition and the Polish Radio Prize for her performances of Chopin Waltzes and Mazurkas. As this collection of awards shows, her technical skills are among the most formidable of her generation and her playing is notable for its uninhibited brilliance. It is therefore no surprise that she is considered to be one of the greatest pianists of our time, among such renowned pianists as Michelangeli, Horowitz, and Maurizio Pollini.
Visions de l'Amen
Martha Argerich and Charles Dutoit chose to make these recordings, to celebrate forty years of performing together in concerts throughout the world. Their partnership dates back to when Charles Dutoit first began to conduct and Martha Argerich appeared as his first soloist in one of these early concerts. It is for this historical reason, that they chose to produce this album in collaboration with EMI Classics.

Martha Argerich Martha Argerich (born June 5 ) is a pianist of Argentinian origin. Argerich was born in Buenos Aires , and initially studied with her mother who was a piano teacher. She gave her debut concert at the age of eight, playing a concerto by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart . The family moved to Europe in , and Argerich studied with Friedrich Gulda in Switzerland . She later studied with Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli and Stefan Askenase . In , she won two major piano competitions in Geneva and Bolzano within a few weeks, and her career as a professional pianist was launched. Argerich took the musical world by storm in at the International Frederick Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw . One of her performances in that winning campaign was a defiantly confident reading of Chopin's Etude, op. 10 no. 1 in C major, a piece that Vladimir Horowitz famously refused to perform live. In the same year, she made her first recording, including works by Fr©d©ric Chopin Johannes Brahms Maurice Ravel Sergei Prokofiev , and Franz Liszt . A few years later she recorded Chopin's Sonata no. 3

Legendary pianist Martha Argerich remains something of a mystery to the public, that an entirely original interview with her appears here is a rare and extraordinary gift. We extend our warmest thanks to her for her sharing of her unique and fascinating personality.
Jura Margulis: You were born in Argentina and your first piano teacher was Scaramuzza. Tell me about him. Martha Argerich: My mother took me to him when I was five, she always wanted the best...she was not herself a musician, but she knew what was the best thing to do. He was an Italian maestro, a despot with sadistic tendencies, mostly in his youth! I came to him when he was old, and milder, although still.... He taught several generations of the greatest pianists in Argentina, the father of Barenboim, De Raco, and Bruno Leonardo Gelber, who studied with him at the same time as me.
JM: Tell me some of the strange things he did to his students. Argerich: He would one day demand your wrist to be so high it would literally touch the lid, then the next day so low that your palm would touch the wood underneath the keys. This was not actually the way he wanted you to play, of course...The side effect was that the students who feared him would gather and confer about his whim of the day...you know, "today he wants the wrist up"...Another thing I remember, one student who traveled quite some way, and only once a month, was instructed to play on the piano as if he were cleaning the keys. you know, a certain staccato technique. The next month when he arrived for his lesson, Scaramuzza shouted "Cretino, what do you think you are doing ... cleaning the keys?" He was quite unpredictable, irrational, but a great teacher. He said a student is like iron or steel, if you bend iron it breaks, and the sooner the better. If you bend steel, it regains its original shape.
