Those two lived in different centuries, but there are points of connection between them: both had their early training in Warsaw, both spent much of their lives abroad, both wrote an extensive number of mazurkas, and both were associated with the Warsaw Conservatory: Chopin studied there briefly as a boy, and Szymanowski served as its director in the 1920s. Both men were also profound Polish nationalists, though that shows up only fitfully in their music, and on this recital it appears only in Chopin's three mazurkas.
