Piotr Anderszewski
Born in 1969 to Polish-Hungarian parents, Piotr Anderszewski began playing the piano at the age of six and studied at the Lyon and Strasbourg Conservatories, the University of Southern California, and the Chopin Academy in Warsaw. Anderszewski is considered to be among the most compelling pianists of the current generation. Since launching his énternational career at London's Wigmore Hall in 1991 with a recital featuring Beethoven's Diabelli Variations, he continued to capture the attention of critics and audiences worldwide with his distinctive interpretations and commanding technique. Anderszewski made his U.S. orchestral debut in 2000 with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Since then, he has made debuts with the Boston, Seattle, Baltimore and Montreal Symphony Orchestras as well as at the Ravinia and Tanglewood Festivals. He has also appeared in recital in San Francisco, Vancouver and at the Orchestra Hall in Chicago. The artist's worldwide orchestral engagements have included performances with the Munich Philharmonic, London Symphony, Orchestre National in Paris and the Vienna Radio Symphony, among others. As a recitalist, he has appeared in most major European venues, from London's Wigmore and Queen Elizabeth Halls to the Theatre des Champs Elysees. Piotr Anderszewski's first recording - featuring works by Bach, Beethoven and Webern - won the Polish Critic's Prize. In 2000, the pianist became an exclusive Virgin Classics artist, where his main releases include a disc of Mozart Piano Concerti with the Sinfonia Varsovia featuring Anderszewski as both player and director, a solo disc of Bach's First, Third and Sixth Partitas, which was nominated for a 2003 Grammy Award, and a recently recorded Chopin disc. Gramophone magazine voted his latest recording CD of the Month in August 2004, describing Anderszewski's playing as "a beacon of light and quality. Here, surely, is the most powerful and distinctive of musical voices, a rare combination of purity and adventure."

His first solo CD won the 1996 Polish Critics’ Prize and his most recent recording, an all Bach CD for the Harmonia Mundi label, was enthusiastically received by critics. According to filmmaker Bruno Monsaingeon, whose latest project is based on Anderszewski, the pianist “combines many of the finest qualities of Gould, Richter and Michelangelli in his playing and his approach to music.

MUSIC REVIEW Piotr Anderszewski, piano
Presented by the International Piano Festiva At: Williams College, Tuesday night WILLIAMSTOWN - Pianist Piotr Anderszewski is already established as a major figure in several countries, and it's only a matter of time before American households will need to learn how to pronounce his name. Bruno Monsaingeon, who made Glenn Gould's last video, Bach's "Goldberg Variations," has taped Anderszewski in his signature piece, Beethoven's "Diabelli Variations," a video that has already won acclaim in Europe and will be released to the home market in this country in just a few days. It may be the best visual document ever made of a pianist in performance, and Anderszewski makes the hourlong work pass in a flash of lightning. Anderszewski's wonderful fingers are directed by a strikingly original musical intelligence; he's a poet at the keyboard, an interpretive genius, which means you can't argue with him, even if you don't like what he's doing. And he's one of the few pianists today who could get away with playing a recital on a sultry night wearing a black body shirt instead of a penguin suit. The brooding photographs of Anderszewski that the International Piano Festival had posted around the lobby of Chapin Hall had disappeared by concert's end on Tuesday night.

Metromix.com -Chicago Guide by John von Rhein Classical review, pianist Piotr Anderszewski at Mandel Hall
By rights, an important young pianist such as Piotr Anderszewski deserves to be introduced to the Chicago concert public at our foremost downtown venue, Orchestra Hall. But such debuts happen less frequently these days as the Symphony Center piano series recycles the same brand-name artists season after season. So hats off to Marna Seltzer, the enterprising director of the University of Chicago Presents series, for engineering Anderszewski's Chicago recital debut Friday night in Mandel Hall on extremely short notice. The 32-year-old Polish-Hungarian pianist was en route from Tokyo to Paris when Seltzer managed to persuade him to add Chicago to his concert itinerary. He was replacing the Hagen Quartet, which had canceled its North American tour because of the illness of one of its members. The fact that Seltzer presented Anderszewski as part of a chamber music series built around the theme "Musicians and Poets" seemed fitting, since he is both a musician and a poet.

In his first recording for Virgin Classics the extraordinarily gifted Polish-Hungarian pianist Piotr Anderszewski performs the work with which he has been most closely associated since the beginning of his career: Beethovens fiendishly difficult Diabelli Variations. Anderszewskis very personal identification with this piano masterpiece has been documented by film-maker Bruno Monsaingeon, whose recent television film includes footage of the making of this recording. Piotr’s transformations
Anderszewski brings Bach and Beethoven to Tanglewood
BY DAVID WEININGER "Compelling" is a word that attaches itself easily to pianist Piotr Anderszewski. At a time when accuracy in musical performance is valued over individuality, he offers interpretations that are imaginative, provocative, and full of character. He dismisses the idea that musicians should subjugate their artistic impulses to the authority of the text as "bullshit." His playing is imbued with the quality so lacking in today’s musicianship: personality. So is his conversation. On the phone from his home in Paris, the Warsaw-born Anderszewski, who’ll be giving a solo recital at Tanglewood next Thursday, describes the current fad for realizing the composer’s intentions as accurately as possible as "false humility. Of course you have to respect the music, and of course you have to know about style and tradition. To make a good interpretation, you simply have to be educated — this I wouldn’t even discuss! But then comes your artistry. Otherwise, if you want to be as accurate as possible, a computer could do it better probably. But then, I wonder, who’d want to listen to the computer?"
