With both hi-res mediums in their infancy, and with the relative shortage of really well-mixed multi-channel SACDs, a lot of audiophiles out there have seized on a relative handful of titles which offer an excellent presentation of multi-channel sound, with a good blend of the front channels and judicious use of surrounds. One of these is James Taylor’s Hourglass, which has received much-deserved praise and is a frequently used demo disc for many a multi-channel setup.
I regularly visit various online audiophile forums and chat rooms; I often find links to really useful information and they serve as a really good barometer of what’s going on in our “hobby” (feel free to substitute profession, obsession or addiction as applies). Since the release of Hourglass I’ve read nothing but praise for all the right reasons, but with the arrival of JT, I’m finding a really mixed bag of comments, many of them really negative. Everyone seems to agree that the surround presentation is in the same league as Hourglass, but that’s where the niceness stops and the nitpicking begins. A commonly used adjective describing the performance is “weak”. WEAK!

George GERSHWIN (1900-1990)
An American in Paris • Porgy and Bess Suite • Cuban Overture • Gershwin in Hollywood
New Zealand Symphony Orchestra • James Judd
Playing Time 65:12
George Gershwin’s An American in Paris provides a further synthesis of the jazz that he saw as the essentially American folk-music and the traditional classical orchestra. This finds a further place in his triumphantly successful black opera Porgy and Bess, from which Robert Russell Bennett has drawn a Symphonic Picture. Cuban Overture turns to the characteristic rumba, while Gershwin in Hollywood is an instrumental arrangement by Bennett of some of Gershwin’s best known songs.

Guillermo Venegas Lloveras was a man of many, very close friends. Guillermo was very intense in everything he did. and this applied also to making friends. He was admired for his talent by many persons who because of this became his friend. He was also loyal to friends to the extreme. The readers that are aware of the history of Puerto Rico during Guillermo Venegas's lifetime will recognize that in this list and among his close friends were almost all the important persons (with some exceptions) that were the principal players during Puerto Rico's revolutionary renaissance in music, art, literature, industry, tourism, commerce, education, politics, and standard of living. This is a list of some of the many friends of Guillermo, as well as persons that were important in his life. This list is not, by any means complete. The author is aware that important people have been left out due to a lack of research. Our apologies.

He goes into a bar to recover from the journey while the procession of the "Virgen de la Amargura" goes by. But the night doesn't end very happily. The bandit gets involved in a fight and kills another man. He goes to jail. Months later, Zamarilla escapes and hides under the mantle of the "Virgen de la Amargura". Though a thorough search is carried out, the authorities can't find him. Amazed, the bandit offers the Virgin a white rose. On leaving, he discovers that the flower is now red. A miracle, he thinks. Soprano Adrianne Pieczonka, who sang the Marschallin on the first night, fell ill immediately thereafter; since apparently no cover had been contracted in advance, the company had to find various replacements at the last moment, including Cheryl Studer, Brigitte Hahn and Elizabeth Whitehouse. Cheryl Studer came in for one performance only, on January 11, and proved that the role suits her very well at this point in her career. In spite of the short notice, she fitted perfectly in the production and sang securely, giving an authoritative performance. As Octavian, mezzo Kristine Jepson was also very effective, and sang with youthful impetus. She proved especially remarkable in the last act, where she found a perfect partner in Laura Aikin, a lovely Sophie. Kurt Rydl has sang the role of Baron Ochs a big number of times and his account of the role is complete. All supporting roles were well cast, including the Italian singer, Tito Beltran, who looked and sounded exactly how Strauss thought an Italian singer should look and sound. The Pierluigi Pizzi production featured traditional sets turning on a rotating platform, that allowed changes from the Marschallin's bedroom to her living room and other settings without interrupting the action. In the pit Jeffrey Tate gave a lively though appropriately melancholy reading of the score.

Frank Cadenhead's Letters from Paris 2001 January Gerald Finley as Don Giovanni at the Bast ille Photo: With the strikes at the finally resolved in late December, all the stages of the lyric theaters in Paris were in full operation and the variety and depth of the offerings were impressive. The first week of January saw finishing its run at the Palais Garnier with all the color and stage effects on display. This production, by 78 year old stage legend Benno Besson, was filled with handsome stage images and imaginative direction. It was a delight for the eyes, and, on the evenings when Natalie Dessay was singing the Queen of the Night, a treat for the ears too. Die Fledermaus was given a spectacular new production designed by famed actress and film director, Coline Serreau (Three Men and a Cradle, Romauld and Juliette). With an attractive young group of singers who can act, and trapeze acts and break dancing, grand sets and elaborate costumes, it was an impressive night of theater; but the director gave the libretto a different, and darker, interpretative thrust. Most treat this work as a meaningless song to the pleasures of champagne. Serreau's research found that the Strauss clan was converted from the Jewish religion earlier and that Johann Strauss gave his support and prestige to groups that fought the anti-Semitism that was always a feature of the Viennese landscape. Viewed in this perspective, the story can be seen, as the critic from Le Monde wrote, as a story of 'vengeance, mystification, and humiliation'. Remember the story: Dr. Falke was abandoned by Eisenstein in a park after a party and awoke on a bench at dawn, disoriented and wearing a bat costume. It was Falke, of course, who arranged the party at which Eisenstein makes passes at both his wife and his parlor maid, both in disguise.
