O ver the years, we have interviewed many well-known and not-so-well-known artists and educators. Each interviewee has a unique take on their art and their career in music. We recommend that you sit down and spend some time with each of these previous interviews. You'll find them just as interesting and thought-provoking as the current one. The opinions offered here are those of the interviewee and do not necessarily represent those of the West Mesa Music Teachers Association, its officers, or members. (We have attorneys, too!). At the end of each interview, you'll find hypertext links to the interviewee's e-mail and Web sites (where available), so you can learn more if you're interested. New Zealanders Commemorate National Day in Salt Lake City
February 6, 2002
New opera sensation, Jonathan Fa'afetai Lemalu joined other New Zealanders in performing a New Zealand musical showcase to an eager Salt Lake City public. Marking New Zealand's National day (Waitangi Day - February 6), tickets to the event had sold out two months beforehand, and it was standing room only in the 2000 seat Assembly Hall. New Zealand Ambassador in Washington, John Wood, joined guests of honour at the Salt Lake City Concert. Other New Zealand artists joining Lemalu, were Maori soprano Marie Adele MacArthur, Romanian-born New Zealand pianist Eugene Albulescu, and highly acclaimed musician and Associate Professor of Music Terence Dennis of the University of Otago. Among the guests of honour were New Zealand's Minister of Sport, the Hon Trevor Mallard, and the New Zealand Winter Olympic team. All musicians paid tribute to their country and the New Zealand people in their performances. Lemalu sang "Sea Fever" - a moving tribute to New Zealand's greatest ever yachtsman, Sir Peter Blake, tragically killed off the coast of Brazil in 2001. The evening concluded with a rousing Maori welcome, challenge and waiata (singing) by the Salt Lake City Maori Kapa Haka group.

The Board of Trustees has scheduled four meetings with the congregation to discuss bylaw changes proposed by a special committee of the board. Two of the meetings will be held between Sunday services - on Feb. 18 and Feb. 25. Meetings will be held after the second Sunday service on Feb. 25 and March 4. The Board of Trustees will use the hearings to determine its position on the various recommendations from the special panel that spent much of last year giving MVUC's bylaws their first major review in decades. Thus far, the board has only reviewed the recommendations. Copies of the committee's recommendations have been available in the Commons for weeks. Alternative proposals reviewed by the board on several items will also be available in the Commons in time for the bylaws meetings with the congregation. The Board of Trustees scheduled the bylaw review meetings during its Feb. 5 regular meeting, which included final approval of an MVUC Employee Handbook that provides guidelines on all aspects of employment at the church. The handbook has been the major work of the Personnel Committee and other volunteers for many months.

Of Note
By Larry Adams For much of this century, Franz Liszt has been far better known for his notorious personal life and for his career as the 19th-century piano virtuoso than for being a composer of substance. In the popular imagination, Liszt is the lover of Marie, Countess d'Agout and Carolyne, Princess Sayn-Wittgenstein. Liszt is the father of Cosima, who married the conductor Hans von BŸlow and then ran away with Richard Wagner. Liszt is the piano virtuoso who reduced instruments to kindling and then bestowed the broken strings and hammers on his ardent admirers. Liszt is the pianist who married the poetry of Chopin with a formidable technique suggested by Paganini. By the 1960s and '70s, however, attitudes began to change toward Liszt and his music. Pianists like Raymond Lewenthal, Michael Ponti, and Leonard Pennario began to rediscover such Liszt contemporaries as Sigismond Thalberg, Freidrich Kalkbrenner, and Louis Moreau Gottschalk. At the same time, the record-buying public's thirst for the complete works of a given composer led to the reexamination of forgotten repertoire. It was amid this great interest in Liszt that Fernando Laires created the American Liszt Society in 1964. The society's current membership of some 600 Liszt enthusiasts, evenly divided between scholars and performers, has served as a North American nexus for the study of Liszt's work and life; the organization has also been instrumental in examining the tradition of Liszt's performance practice. It has done these things through the semiannual publication of the

Musician and composer Bill Warfield lives for the kind of event that is unfolding next weekend at Lehigh University's Zoellner Arts Center.
Since he came to Lehigh in 1997 and started the Lehigh Valley Jazz Repertory Orchestra, which performs at the center, Warfield also has wanted to create original programming for the center.
In a way, he's already accomplished some of that. The debut performance of the repertory orchestra in October 1997 featured an extended Warfield composition, `Le Jazz Hot,` based on the Parisian jazz of the 1920s and featuring David Liebman, the internationally known saxophonist who lives in the Stroudsburg area.
Next weekend's events will begin Friday with another original Warfield composition, `Beneath The Stacks: The Second Line of the Industrial Revolution,` based on the history of Bethlehem, from its earliest days as a Moravian settlement to the aftermath of Bethlehem Steel's departure from the city.
To add excitement, members of the respected jazz group the Yellowjackets will join members of Warfield's Repertory Orchestra, Lehigh faculty members and Lehigh students in the ensemble that will debut the Warfield piece.

Founded in 1991 by Sam Konise, Christopher Kane and Eugene Albulescu, the Trio immediately attracted critical acclamation for performances nationally and internationally. They competed in 1995 in the Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition, and were placed fourth in the world. They were also one of only sixteen groups selected from around the world to be invited to the highly prestigious ARD International Chamber Music Competition in Munich in 1998.
The Trio have performed throughout the country for Chamber Music New Zealand and regularly perform special school programmes. They regularly commission new works by New Zealand composers. In 1998 the Trio gained residency at the University of Waikato.
The Trio is named after the late Fred Turnovsky, a Wellington industrialist and most generous patron of the arts, especially of chamber music. The Turnovsky Trust continues to play an integral role in supporting the group.
The debut recording by the Turnovsky Trio was a recording of works by Brahms and Beethoven, released during 1996 on the Trust label.
