Our focus is on effective collaborations with American industry, universities, and other national laboratories to develop electric power and electronic device applications of high-temperature superconductors (HTS). Outstanding scientific research projects underpin our international leadership position and provide the basis for technical advances. Applied research and development efforts include powder synthesis, tape/coil processing, thin/thick film deposition, characterization of microstructural and superconducting properties, power cryogenic engineering, and prototype devices. Current projects conducted in collaboration with industry include development of tapes, fault current limiters, and power transmission cables based on HTS materials. Individuals from several Los Alamos organizations are a part of this team effort to evolve this exciting technology.

What is superconductivity?
Superconductivity is a phenomenon observed in several metals and ceramic materials. When these materials are cooled to temperatures ranging from near absolute zero (-459 degrees Fahrenheit, degrees Kelvin, -273 degrees Celsius) to liquid nitrogen temperatures (-321 F, 77 K, -196 C), they have no electrical resistance. The temperature at which electrical resistance is zero is called the critical temperature T c ) and varies with the individual material. For practical purposes, critical temperatures are achieved by cooling materials with either liquid helium or liquid nitrogen. The following table shows the critical temperatures of various superconductors: Material Type T c (K) Zinc metal Aluminum metal Tin metal Mercury metal YBa Cu O ceramic TlBaCaCuO ceramic Because these materials have no electrical resistance, meaning electrons can travel through them freely, they can carry large amounts of electrical current for long periods of time without losing energy as heat. Superconducting loops of wire have been shown to carry electrical currents for several years with no measurable loss. This property has implications for

American Superconductor Corporation (Nasdaq: AMSC) is the world's principal vendor of high temperature superconductor (HTS) wire and large rotating superconductor machinery, and it is a world- leading supplier of dynamic reactive power grid stabilization products.
Choose an Application Semiconductors Industrial Wind Energy Utility Ship Propulsion American Superconductor Achieves Important Benchmarks for Commercialization of Second Generation High Temperature Superconductor Wire Shown above: Magnified transverse cross-section of a three-ply, 4.4-millimeter (mm) wide, 2G high temperature superconductor (HTS) wire architecture - called 344 superconductor wire. This proprietary three-ply lamination architecture adds increased stability and options for commercial applications. Dr. Greg Yurek, the company's chief executive officer, announced in a plenary speech at the DOE meeting that AMSC had successfully developed and demonstrated the first long lengths of 344 superconductor wire, a new 3-ply, 4.4-millimeter (mm) wide 2G HTS wire. Yurek introduced the term "344 superconductor wire" in his speech. The wire has industry standard dimensions, and when cooled with liquid nitrogen the coolant of choice for applications such as superconductor power transmission cables conducts more than 75 times the electrical current of copper wire with the same dimensions. Derived from the world's first 80- to 100-meter-long, 4-centimeter (cm) wide strips of 2G HTS material, the first 344 superconductor wire was produced using AMSC's continuous reel-to-reel deposition processes.

    Abstract
Recent U.S. planning and policy documents foretell "how wars will be fought in the future," and warn of new or re-emergent "global peer competitors" in the 2005-2025 time frame. It is generally appreciated that this period will be characterized by rapid progress in many areas of technology. However, assembler-based nanotechnology and artificial general intelligence have implications far beyond the Pentagon's current vision of a "revolution in military affairs." Whereas the perfection of nuclear explosives established a strategic stalemate, advanced molecular manufacturing based on self-replicating systems, or any military production system fully automated by advanced artificial intelligence, would lead to instability in a confrontation between rough equals. Rivals would feel pressured to preempt, if possible, in initiating a full-scale military buildup, and certainly not to be caught behind. As the rearmament reached high levels, close contact between forces at sea and in space would give an advantage to the first to strike.
