How Do Physicists Use an E-Print Archive?
Implications for Institutional E-Print Services

Abstract
Introduction
At the University of Nottingham, we are in the process of setting up an experimental institutional e-print archive [ ]. The technical side of this has been reasonably straightforward. We are using the software produced by e-prints.org [ ], and have customized the interface to give it a Nottingham 'look and feel'. However, the managerial and cultural aspects of 'self-archiving' have proved to be rather more complex. How can researchers be encouraged to contribute to the e-print archive? What is in it for them? How can procedures be managed to make it simple for them to archive their material? To help us address these questions, we decided we needed to know more about how a successful e-print archive is actually being used by researchers. To do this, we chose to look at use of the arXiv service (formerly known as the Los Alamos XXX service) [ ]. We consulted (face-to-face or by email) a number of researchers who are making use of arXiv. At the same time, we looked at the service itself to see if what we were being told seemed to reflect the wider experience.

mathematics curriculum for physics and electrical engineering students.

Mathematics for Physicists and Electrical Engineers
The following paper was prepared in 1988 when I was an Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering at the main campus of The Pennsylvania State University and a member of the Electrical Engineering Department's Curriculum Committee.
There are two reasons that this paper is posted here on the Internet:
  • Encourage mathematics teachers and professors to concentrate on certain topics, and to include derivations and "word problems" on every examination.
  • Inform pupils and students who are contemplating a career in engineering, chemistry, or physics that mathematics is not only important, it is essential to the practice of those professions.
cite as: Ronald B. Standler, "Editorial: Mathematics for Engineers," The Journal of Undergraduate Mathematics and Its Applications, Vol. 11, pages 1-6, Spring 1990.
Why is mathematics important to engineers? And what in mathematics is most important?
The dialogue about mathematics for engineering students must not be confined just to engineering faculty at four-year universities. Many undergraduate engineering students transfer from two-year colleges, where they took all of their mathematics classes. And all engineering students receive their mathematics "basic training" (in algebra, trigonometry, and analytic geometry) in high school.
I hope in this essay to influence mathematics instructors, particularly those who have little contact with professors of engineering, to consider the needs of their students who will be going on to engineering careers.

    Abstract
: We describe a new experimental approach to probabilistic atom-photon (signal) entanglement. Two qubit states are encoded as orthogonal collective spin excitations of an unpolarized atomic ensemble. After a programmable delay, the atomic excitation is converted into a photon (idler). Polarization states of both the signal and the idler are recorded and are found to be in violation of the Bell inequality. Atomic coherence times exceeding several microseconds are achieved by switching off all the trapping fields - including the quadrupole magnetic field of the magneto-optical trap - and zeroing out the residual ambient magnetic field.
