    Physicists create a 'perfect' way to study the Big Bang
    Physicists have created the state of matter thought to have filled the Universe just a few microseconds after the big bang and found it to be different from what they were expecting. Instead of a gas, it is more like a liquid. Understanding why it is a liquid should take physicists a step closer to explaining the earliest moments of our Universe. Not just any old liquid, either. Its collective movement is rather like the way a school of fish swims 'as one' and is a sign that the fluid possesses an extremely low viscosity, making it what physicists call a perfect fluid. In fact, tentative calculations suggest its extraordinarily low viscosity makes it the most perfect fluid ever created. Researchers had confidently believed it would be something like 'steam', consisting of free quarks and gluons. "No one predicted that it would be a liquid," said Professor John Nelson from the University of Birmingham, who heads the British involvement in the STAR Collaboration, a multinational experiment. "This aspect was totally unexpected," said Professor Nelson, "and will lead to new scientific research regarding the properties of matter at extremes of temperature and density, previously inaccessible in a laboratory." The Birmingham contingent is funded entirely by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).

I was teaching at the Valley School in Bangalore those days and my colleagues and I would read books by Capra, Zukav and others that dealt with quantum physics and eastern mysticism, and our discussions would drag on into the night. After all, in a school that was based on J. Krishnamurti's philosophy most teachers were familiar with Krishnamurti's dialogues with scientists, mathematicians, and psychologists. And there were those innumerable tapes of his discussions with the theoretical physicist David Bohm (author of Wholeness and the Implicate Order and some twenty other books on theoretical physics, cognitive science, etc).     Introduction Welcome to the web pages of the Oxide Research Programme. The research programme is a collaborative effort between experimental and theoretical physicists, together with material scientists, with the common goal of understanding of the behaviour of correlated electrons in oxide materials. The work is distributed across the collaborating institutions: at the University of St Andrews (School of Physics and Astronomy), at the University of Birmingham (in the School of Physics and Astronomy and also the School of Chemistry) and in the Low Temperature Physics group at the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge. We also work with a number of international collaborations. The experimental work is headed by Professor Andy Mackenzie (St Andrews) and the theoretical work by Professor Andy Schofield (Birmingham).     Extra-large 'atoms' allow Penn physicists to solve the riddle of why things melt
    June 30, 2005 Physicists at the University of Pennsylvania have experimentally discovered a fundamental principal about how solid materials melt . Their studies have shown explicitly that melting begins at defects within the crystalline structure of solid matter, beginning along the cracks, grain boundaries and dislocations that are present in the otherwise orderly array of atoms. Their findings, which will appear today in the journal Science , answer longstanding fundamental questions about melting and will likely influence research in physics, chemistry, materials science and engineering, as well as studies of biological importance.

    Physicists control the flip of electron spin
    May 27, 2005 Today's computers and other technological gizmos operate on electronic charges, but researchers predict that a new generation of smaller, faster, more efficient devices could be developed based on another scientific concept – electronic "spin." The problem, however, is that researchers have found it challenging to control or predict spin – which keeps practical applications out of reach. But physicists in Europe, California and at Ohio University now have found a way to manipulate the spin of an electron with a jolt of voltage from a battery, according to research findings published in the recent issue of the journal

    Physicists freeze light, propose optical CPUs
    By Lucy Sherriff Published Tuesday 12th April 2005 11:33 GMT Get breaking Reg news straight to your desktop - click here to find out how Scientists at Harvard University have discovered how to freeze light, so that it can be used to build an optical computer, theoretically capable of processing information ten times faster than traditional electronics. The researchers, led by Prof. Lene Hau , has calculated that controlled, coherent processing with light can be performed using ultra-cold atoms known as Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). Hau outlined her research yesterday at the Physics 2005 conference in Warwick. Hau has discovered, in her work on slow light, that a BEC can preserve the phase and amplitude of a light pulse. In normal matter, these properties would be smeared out, destroying any information content. If a device can be built that preserves that information, Hau argues, it could be developed into the CPU of an optical computer.
