Physicists discover Guy Fawkes would have devastated Westminster
Institute of Physics News Release
PR74(03) - 5th November 2003
Had the gunpowder plot succeeded, Guy Fawkes would not only have destroyed the old palace of Westminster but would have caused chaos and devastation across central London, destroying Westminster Hall, the Abbey and the streets immediately surrounding them with structural damage being caused to buildings as far away as Whitehall.

Physicists have worked out for the first time the true extent of the damage Guy Fawkes would have caused if the Gunpowder Plot had succeeded on 5th November 1605. Streets up to one third of a mile from the centre of the palace of Westminster would have suffered severe structural damage and windows would have shattered up to a kilometre away from the centre (picture available showing contemporary map of London with blast radius overlaid).

REVIEW
by D.H.Mellor
Durrenmatt's The Physicists
Adapted for Darwin College and presented by Origin in Darwin Hall, 5-6 December 1996
The Swiss playwright Friedrich Durrenmatt is a sort of dramatic Roal Dahl, writing macabre melodramas with a serious and sinister twist, a genre of which The Physicists is a fine if rather dated example. It was written in the MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction) world of the Cold War, when we all knew that friction between NATO and the Warsaw Pact might at any time provoke the use of nuclear weapons to wipe the earth ten times over. That prospect was a constant backdrop to our lives then, as it isn't now: the weapons still exist, of course, and madmen, terrorists, dictators and ideologues might still acquire and threaten to use them; but at least we no longer live in states whose defence relies on deterring enemies by threatening to destroy the world if they attack. This too is why spies are less fascinating now than they were in Bond's heyday, when the stakes they played for were apparently so much higher.

46. Famous Physicists And Astronomers Michael Faraday
Short biography explains the importance of Faraday's work.
http://www.phy.hr/~dpaar/fizicari/xfaraday.html
Michael Faraday
The English chemist and physicist Michael Faraday, b. Sept. 22, 1791, d. Aug. 25, 1867, is known for his pioneering experiments in electricity and magnetism. Many consider him the greatest experimentalist who ever lived. Several concepts that he derived directly from experiments, such as lines of magnetic force, have become common ideas in modern physics. Faraday was born at Newington, Surrey, near London. He received little more than a primary education, and at the age of 14 he was apprenticed to a bookbinder. There he became interested in the physical and chemical works of the time. After hearing a lecture by the famous chemist Humphry Davy, he sent Davy the notes he had made of his lectures. As a result Faraday was appointed, at the age of 21, assistant to Davy in the laboratory of the Royal Institution in London. During the initial years of his scientific work, Faraday occupied himself mainly with chemical problems. He discovered two new chlorides of carbon and succeeded in liquefying chlorine and other gases. He isolated benzene in 1825, the year in which he was appointed director of the laboratory. Davy, who had the greatest influence on Faraday's thinking, had shown in 1807 that the metals sodium and potassium can be precipitated from their compounds by an electric current, a process known as electrolysis. Faraday's vigorous pursuit of these experiments led in 1834 to what became known as Faraday's laws of electrolysis.

47. PHIL 2510: Milesian Physicists
Some study notes, with an emphasis on the received view of this tradition.
http://www.webster.edu/~evansja/guides/milesians.html
MILESIAN PHILOSOPHY
  • Interpreting fragmented philosophies
    • making your sources speak sense
    • reconstructing plausible arguments for their conclusions
    • avoiding anachronisms: terms, issues, interests, arguments
  • A received view:
    • three (and only three?) Generations
    • three Questions
    • What is the primary stuff? ? The ONE
    • How does this stuff change? The MANY
    • How does (some of) this stuff come to be alive?
    • some problems with the received view
What I call here the "received view" has its advantages. It organizes otherwise fragmentary thought in a context, it demonstrates the nature of philosophical "progress" via reasoned criticism, and it stresses the continuity between the earliest themes in Western philosophy and the questions that captured later thinkers. The view also has some problems. If Milesian Philosphy focused on these three questions, it is difficult to explain either Anaximander's detailed cosmology, with its (pardon the pun) limited reference to the Unlimited ( APERION ) or Anaximines' rejection of Anaximander's compelling arguments. As far as Anaximander is concerned, the APERION does not seem to provide adequate basis for his concern with cylces, opposites, and imbalances. As for Anaximander, although his philosophy appears to have been markedly less abstract than that of his predecessor, he does seem to have concentrated on observable transformations. It may not be too great an exaggeration to say that Anaximines took up the scientific clues in Anaxminader's work, and that these interested him more than the more metaphysical and speculative concepts.

Most of us became physicists because we found physics fascinating. We assumed somehow that, when our formal studies ended, we would find jobs in physics that would continue to reward us intellectually and, unlike our graduate work, would also reward us financially. Depending on what year we started job hunting, our expectations might have been fulfilled easily or might have been redefined drastically. Physics Today has covered careers in physics for many years. During the last downturn in employment, we launched a series, Career Choices, which ran from 1993 to 1998 (see http://www.physicstoday.org and visit the related articles archives . More recently, as the employment picture began to change again, two Reference Frame columnists conveyed their concerns about careers: Philip W. Anderson in "Why Do They Leave Physics?" (Physics Today, September 1999, page 11, and Leo P. Kadanoff in "Changing" (December 1999, page 11). "Physicists in Finance" by Joseph M. Pimbley (January 1997, page 42) and "Career Opportunities in Optics" by Anthony M. Johnson and C. Breck Hitz (May 2000, page 25) were published as feature articles.
