    History of Modern Physics
The ITFA also features a longterm research project on the history of physics headed by Professor Kox. Current research activities are focused on the history of physics in the 19th and 20th centuries, in particular in the Netherlands. The rapid development of Dutch physics in the last decades of the last century into a professional, highly respected discipline deserves in-depth study. In this study, the end-product of which should be a monograph describing this development, a number of topics will be studied, such as (i) `internal' development (research programs); (ii) institutional history; (iii) the place of Dutch physics in the international scientific community; (iv) political and other external influences on the development of the discipline. It is planned to carry out this program in a number of stages. At this moment, a dissertation on the history of physics in Amsterdam is in preparation; in addition work on a scientific biography of H.A. Lorentz is proceeding. Possible future projects are a study of the Dutch tradition in statistical physics and a study of the role of the Zeeman effect in the development of quantum physics. The history of science enterprise at the University of Amsterdam has a high quality but a small scale. International contacts play a vital role. There exist strong ties with Boston University (the Einstein Papers Project) and with the Pieter Zeeman Stichting which is funding various projects and the Pieter Zeeman chair for visiting scholars.

HISTORY OF PHYSICS MUSEUM Museum of Physics is opened in the Institute of Solid State Physics at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Theoretical and practical activities are made there. Academician Milko Borissov is originator to documentary historical research of physics in Bulgaria. This activity carries on up to now. The significant role of chair on theoretical physics, created by Professor Georgi Maneff at the Sofia University, is investigated of late years. Laboratory of Academician George Nadjakov becomes museum in 1981. Some apparatus, books and documents are collected there. Today Museum has a reading-room and a small permanent exhibition. The Museum gives possibility to historical investigations on physics in Bulgaria. Old physical apparatus, photographs and papers are sown there.

    THE WAR PERIOD, 1941-1945
Preparations During the period 1935-1941, research activities in the physics department proceeded almost as if America's entry into World War II had been forseen and that the department would play an important role in the associated war effort. The number of tenure/tenure-track faculty almost doubled, increasing from 7 to 13 during this period and the research productivity as indexed by publications in the Physical Review went up proportionally to nearly 25 publications per year. It was during this period that the department became a major player in nuclear physics research, with the construction of a Van de Graaff accelerator and, more importantly, a cyclotron which would give the department unique capabilities for carrying out research during war time. As envisioned, the Van de Graaff accelerator was designed to produce a stream of neutrons through "high energy" deuteron-deuteron collisions with the resultant neutron flux then being used to study neutron diffraction and neutron activation of heavy elements. Three graduate students, R.E. Schreiber, R.E. Holmquist and W.A. Miller, worked on and completed the construction of this accelerator in 1937 at a total cost of only $825.62 above the cost of labor! Unfortunately, the resultant 250 KeV neutron beam only had a flux of about 0.25 milliampere which was too small to be useful for studying neutron diffraction. However, two years later in 1939, following the discovery in Germany by Otto Hahn, Lisa Meitner, and Fritz Strassmann of the fission of uranium when bombarded with low energy neutrons, the Van de Graaff was put to use to study fission fragments. Detection of the fragments was done by the use of photographic plates.
