Historians of science are generally unaware of the contributions of India to physics. The main reason for this is that very little research has been done on the subject in the recent past, a consequence of the fact that there are few history of science departments in Indian universities. The objective of this paper is to present a preliminary outline of early history of physics in India. The schools of Vaisheshika and Samkhya, that were interested in general principles of atomic theory and cosmology, are discussed. In particular, ideas on atoms and molecules, the nature of sound, causality, universals, cosmology, uniform and non-uniform motions are described.

SOUTH ASIAN HISTORY Pages from the history of the Indian sub-continent: Science and Technology in India History of the Physical Sciences in India In all early civilizations, the study of the physical sciences was neither formalized nor separated from other branches of knowledge. And at least initially, there were few conscious attempts to study the theory of science independently of the practical innovations and technologies that required some application of scientific principles. In most cases, technological discoveries took place without any knowledge of the underlying scientific principles, through hit and trial, and by experience. Sometimes there was a vague or approximate awareness of the science, but the predominant focus remained on the utilitarian aspects of the technique, on practical efficacy, as opposed to how and why something worked or didn't work. In India, the earliest applications of chemistry took place in the context of medicine, metallurgy, construction technology (such as manufacture of cement and paints) and in textile production and dyeing. But in the process of understanding chemical processes, there also emerged a concomitant interest in attempting to describe the basic elements of matter - what they were composed of, and how they interacted with each other to produce new substances. Natural phenomenon were studied in the context of tides, rainfall, appearance of the sun, the moon and stellar formations, changes in season, weather patterns and agriculture.

History of Physics Illinois Instruction in engineering at the University of Illinois began in 1870, three years after the university was founded. The engineering faculty consisted of one man, Stillman Robinson, professor of mechanical science and engineering. As a cornerstone of engineering education, Professor Robinson introduced and taught a course in physics, which included lecture-room demonstrations and laboratory practice, a concept considered very novel at that time . Physics is still part of the College of Engineering at Illinois. Physics first became a separate department in 1890 with Samuel V. Stratton as head. Stratton greatly expanded the work in theoretical and applied electricity. Within two years he had introduced and equipped a curriculum in electrical engineering, a subject that was especially stimulated by the increasing use of the 1879 invention of the incandescent filament lamp. Later, Samuel Stratton became the first director of the National Bureau of Standards and then president of MIT. From 1896 to 1929

    History of Physics in Prague
The beginning of science in the Czech territory is related to the founding of the Charles University in Prague by Emperor Charles IV in 1348. During the first centuries of its existence the lectures on physics and astronomy were held in the arts (now philosophy) faculty. The outstanding personalities were Christian of Prachatice (1366-1439), a close friend of Master Jan Hus, and Jan Ondrejuv called Sindel (1375-1454). They were concerned with astronomical observations. Sindel's measurements of the planets and the Sun were so accurate that they were still praised by Tycho Brahe two centuries later. The high level of science in Prague at that time is confirmed by sophisticated Prague Astronomical Clock at the Old Town Hall - the medieval planetarium. It was made according to Sindel's plans by the clockmaster Mikulas of Kadan in 1410. During the religiously tolerant reign of Emperor Rudolph II (1576-1612) who was interested in science and arts, favourable conditions for the development of natural sciences were established. The personal physician of Rudolph II and astronomer Tadeas Hajek of Hajek (1525-1600) published his studies of a supernova in the constellation Cassiopea in 1572. Hajek was in frequent scientific correspondence with the recognized astronomer

    Chapter 1
At the end of the nineteenth century, some physicists believed that the basic principles underlying their subject were already known, and that physics in the future would only consist of filling in the details. They could hardly have been more wrong. The past century has seen the rise of quantum mechanics, relativity, cosmology, particle physics, and solid-state physics, among other fields. These subjects have fundamentally changed our understanding of space, time, and matter. They have also transformed daily life, inspiring a technological revolution that has included the development of radio, television, lasers, nuclear power, and computers. In Quantum Generations , Helge Kragh, one of the world's leading historians of physics, presents a sweeping account of these extraordinary achievements of the past one hundred years. The first comprehensive one-volume history of twentieth-century physics, the book takes us from the discovery of X rays in the mid-1890s to superstring theory in the 1990s. Unlike most previous histories of physics, written either from a scientific perspective or from a social and institutional perspective

As we shall see, very similar views continued to play an important role throughout the twentieth century. Although many of Hicks's contemporaries would have subscribed to his philosophy, by 1895, the vortex theory of atoms had been abandoned by most physicists. Decades of theoretical work had led to no real progress and the grand vortex program was degenerating into sterile mathematics. negative matter The hydrodynamic ether models differed from the Laplacian program in physics, but they nonetheless rested on mechanical ground and were not attempts to overthrow the Newtonian worldview. Hydrodynamics, after all, is the mechanical science of fluid bodies. Thermodynamics, the science of heat and other manifestations of energy, constituted a much more difficult problem for the classical worldview. This branch of physics was sometimes argued not only to be different from mechanics in principle, but also to have priority over mechanics as a more satisfactory foundation on which all of physics could be built. In the 1890s, together with electrodynamics, thermodynamics entered as a competitor to mechanics as far as foundational problems were concerned. In this decade, there was a continual discussion of the

ScienceWeek HISTORY OF SCIENCE: EINSTEIN ON PHYSICS AND PROGRESS
The following points are made by Albert Einstein (Physics Today 2005 June):
    1) If philosophy is interpreted as a quest for the most general and comprehensive knowledge, it obviously becomes the mother of all scientific inquiry. But it is just as true that the various branches of science have, in their turn, exercised a strong influence on the scientists concerned and, beyond that, have affected the philosophical thinking of each generation. Let us glance, from this point of view, at the development of physics and its influence on the conceptual framework of the other natural sciences during the last hundred years.
    2) Since the Renaissance, physics has endeavored to find the general laws governing the behavior of material objects in space and time. To consider the existence of these objects as a problem was left to philosophy. To the scientist, the celestial bodies, the objects on Earth, and their chemical peculiarities, simply existed as real objects in space and time, and his task consisted solely in abstracting these laws from experience by way of hypothetical generalizations.
    3) The laws were supposed to hold without exceptions. A law was considered invalidated if, in a single case, any one of its properly deduced conclusions was disproved by experience. In addition, the laws of the external world were also considered to be complete, in the following sense: If the state of the objects is completely given at a certain time, then their state at any other time is completely determined by the laws of nature. This is just what we mean when we speak of "causality." Such was approximately the framework of the physical thinking a hundred years ago.
