There can be no doubt that plasmas matter. More than 99% of material in the universe is ionized; on Earth, plasmas are used to produce most of our artificial light, they are essential to the semiconductor manufacturing industry and they are at the heart of the quest for commercial energy from nuclear fusion. Plasmas are ionized gases in which long-range electrical and magnetic interactions involving charged particles dominate over collisions between neutral species. Wide ranges of particle energies and particle densities are involved: from the tenuous interstellar medium to dense ablation plumes around the focal spots of high power, short-pulse lasers; from around a hundred million kelvin associated with nuclear fusion reactions to a few thousand kelvin in maintaining the electrical conduction in gases. Plasma Physics embraces all of these. Specific research areas include the following:
  • astrophysics and space physics including intergalactic and interstellar media, solar-terrestrial and magneto/iono-spheric plasmas

University of Colorado, Boulder, Colorado
Objectives of the Center for Theoretical AMO Physics
This Center was formed in 1989 with funding from the National Science Foundation , until funding expired in 1999. While in existence, it provided a national resource for the Theoretical Atomic, Molecular, and Optical (AMO) Physics Community, through the mechanisms listed below. This page is being maintained at a minimal level, nevertheless, because of possible continuing interest in some of the online talks that can be accessed below. Nevertheless, it should be noted that we are no longer sponsoring workshops, and the Condon Postdoctoral Fellowship is no longer being awarded.
  • CTAMOP sponsored workshops in critical areas of Theoretical AMO Physics. These workshops were intended to focus on current problem areas in the field and to enhance the theoretical study of Experimental AMO Physics problems of current interest. CTAMOP funds the research of a faculty member in the Physics Department at the University of Colorado-Boulder , in the general area of Theoretical AMO Physics.

    Electron Transitions
The Bohr model for an electron transition in hydrogen between quantized energy levels with different quantum numbers n yields a photon by emission with quantum energy
This is often expressed in terms of the inverse wavelength or "wave number" as follows:

    Hydrogen Energy Levels
The basic hydrogen energy level structure is in agreement with the Bohr model . Common pictures are those of a shell structure with each main shell associated with a value of the principal quantum number n.
This Bohr model picture of the orbits has some usefulness for visualization so long as it is realized that the "orbits" and the "orbit radius" just represent the most probable values of a considerable range of values. If the radial probabilities for the states are used to make sure you understand the distributions of the probability, then the Bohr picture can be superimposed on that as a kind of conceptual skeleton.

    Hydrogen Energy Level Plot
The basic structure of the hydrogen energy levels can be calculated from the Schrodinger equation. The energy levels agree with the earlier Bohr model, and agree with experiment within a small fraction of an electron volt.

Laboratory atomic physics research has been devoted to studies of the collision processes involving ions, electrons, atoms, and molecules. These processes are studied by a variety of techniques using lasers, microwaves, optical spectroscopy, particle accelerators, and high-speed particle counting and momentum separators. The atomic processes studied are of interest for astrophysics, plasma physics, laser physics, planetary atmosphere physics, hydrogen fusion, and atmospheric pollution. The physics of planetary atmospheres is studied in a diverse program that has included observations of solar eclipses from jet aircraft, balloon and rocket studies of lightning and the aurora borealis, and airglow spectroscopic studies of the ionosphere from sites around the world. Laboratory studies of a number of these processes, including lightning simulation, have been carried out on campus. Theoretical:

Theoretical investigations of the electromagnetic interactions of electrons, ions, atoms, and molecules with each other and with photons are carried out both analytically and numerically. There are research programs concerned with intense radiation fields leading to multiphoton excitation and ionization, with collision theory, with relativistic photon scattering, radiation, and absorption, and with modification of these processes in hot and/or dense plasma environments. These studies have important applications to x-ray laser development, to laser and magnetic fusion, to atmospheric and space physics, and to astrophysics.
