Electron collisions with heavy atoms Heavy atoms are characterised by a large nuclear charge. The large nuclear charge results in the electrons having velocities close to the speed of light. Relativistic quantum mechanics, based on the Dirac equation has to be to get accurate descriptions of the electronic structure. This project will study the scattering of electrons from such atoms using methods based upon the relativistic Dirac equation. This intensely computational project which require initial investigations of different methods for solving the Dirac equation, and then exploiting them to do electron-atom scattering calculations. The Hamiltonian for an atom with Z electrons and protons is
We have seen that the coulomb repulsion between electrons is a very large correction in Helium and that the three body problem in quantum mechanics is only solved by approximation. The states we have from hydrogen are modified significantly. What hope do we have to understand even more complicated atoms? The physics of closed shells and angular momentum enable us to make sense of even the most complex atoms. Because of the Pauli principle, we can put only one electron into each state. When we have enough electrons to fill a shell, say the 1s or 2p, The resulting electron distribution is spherically symmetric because
With all the states filled and the relative phases determined by the antisymmetry required by Pauli, the quantum numbers of the closed shell are determined. As in Helium, the two electrons in the same spatial state, , must by symmetric in space and hence antisymmetric in spin. This implies each pair of electrons has a total spin of 0. Adding these together gives a total spin state with s , which is antisymmetric under interchange. The spatial state must be totally symmetric under interchange and, since all the states in the shell have the same

Some Brief Notes on Atomic Physics Below are a links that may be of use during the course. They are simply brief notes (and often "details" are skipped over/ignored). They are intended to jog your memory of the atomic physics you're learnt to date, and (in some cases) to introduce some of the jargon used in astronomy (which I'll undoubtedly use). Unless I tell you otherwise, or explicitly cover a subject in class, then you will not be expected to remember the nitty-gritty details in a Quiz/Exam. However, as a physcist you should be familiar with the general concepts, conventions etc.
