Home Commentary Surveys Research Background ... Site Info The Astrophysics Spectator is a web site about modern astrophysics. Here you will find articles on how astrophysical objects work and on current research efforts to more completely understand the universe. This web site is written for the reader who has some understanding of basic physics, but who is not familiar with the varied phenomena found in our universe. The basic layout of the site is as survey paths, which can be found under the Surveys link at the top of this and most other pages on this site. Each survey begins with a basic overview of the subject. Part of this overview include simulators of astrophysical phenomena that allow the reader to experiment with the phenomena. The later pages in a survey present the subject in greater and more mathematical depth. A path ends with research pages that describe current research projects and results in astrophysics. The links at the top of each page are Home , which is the current home page of this site, Commentary , which is an index of short essays on topics loosely related to astrophysics, Surveys , which is the index of survey paths, Research , which is the index of research pages and the page leading to recent news items, Background , which is the index page for all background information on astrophysics, including survey pages, simulator pages, tables, bibliographic references, and lists of web resources, Previously , which is an index of previous home pages, and

NASA's Deep Impact Tells a Tale of the Comet
Data from Deep Impact's instruments indicate an immense cloud of fine powdery material was released when the probe slammed into the nucleus of comet Tempel 1 at about 10 kilometers per second (6.3 miles per second or 23,000 miles per hour). The cloud indicated the comet is covered in the powdery stuff. The Deep Impact science team continues to wade through gigabytes of data collected during the July 4 encounter with the comet measuring 5-kilometers-wide by 11-kilometers-long (about 3-miles-wide by 7-miles-long).

UCSC is one of the world's leading centers for both observational and theoretical research in astronomy and astrophysics. The department includes twenty-two faculty members, whose research interests range from the Solar System and the Milky Way to the most distant galaxies in the Universe and the most fundamental questions of cosmology. There are typically over a dozen postdoctoral researchers in residence, as well as a dedicated and skilled technical staff and a steady stream of visiting scientists. The UCSC department was recently ranked first in the country in research impact, based on citation studies. UCSC is also a leader in astrophysics education. The department currently enrolls about twenty-five students working towards the Ph.D. degree. Graduate students benefit from the low student-faculty ratio in the department and extensive research opportunities, as well as course offerings that cover both theoretical and observational aspects of astronomy. UCSC alumni hold positions at leading universities and research institutes around the world. The department offers an undergraduate minor in Astrophysics, and collaborates with the Physics department to offer an undergraduate major in Astrophysics.
