  • Slavoj Žižek 1949-
(Also transliterated as Slavoj Zizek) Slovenian critic, essayist, and editor. The following entry presents an overview of Žižek's career through 2003.
    INTRODUCTION
Žižek has distinguished himself as one of the world's leading cultural theorists. He has earned international notoriety for his numerous volumes of cultural analysis that apply psychoanalytic theory and modern philosophy to American popular culture from a post-Marxist Leftist perspective. Žižek's work has been particularly noted for its explications of the psychoanalytic theories of Jacques Lacan and their significance to cultural and political theory. Žižek's writing style, though challenging and rife with difficult theoretical concepts, has been characterized as both quirky and entertaining, informed by the author's rigorous theoretical analysis and a commitment to political relevance. His sense of absurdity in formulating theoretical approaches to cultural criticism is evidenced in the titles of some of his best known works, such as Enjoy Your Symptom!: Jacques Lacan in Hollywood and Out

    A Conversation with Slavoj Žižek
Recorded on April 15, 2005 in Syracuse, New York during the St. Paul Among the Philosophers conference. ver the past two decades Slavoj Žižek has emerged as a leading transdisciplinary theorist, with critical writings on film, philosophy, politics, psychoanalysis, and religious studies. His breadth of scholarship, along with his novel understanding of Lacanian psychoanalysis and politics, has lifted him to the status of academic celebrity—a position that Žižek rejects outright, but cannot escape. Living down this paparazzi style attention that follows him from lecture to lecture and the general problem of academic fanfare is the subject of Astra Taylor’s documentary film, Žižek! , that explores this tension between Žižek’s intellectual commitment and his celebrity obligations. Setting aside the burdens of academic “stardom,” if one were to fit Žižek’s scholarship into the available modes of academic discourse, it would most likely fall within Lacanian philosophico-cultural analysis, although Žižek’s Lacan varies from the received “structuralist” Lacan of the 1970s (see Žižek’s The Sublime Object of Ideology , London/New York: Verso 1989). Žižek’s Lacanian inspired scholarship is not limited to the internal debates of psychoanalysis; his reconsideration of Lacan in the context of the western philosophical tradition, namely German Idealism, has opened new lines of transdisciplinary inquiry. Presenting Lacan as a figure “outside” of the mainstream of American “ego psychology” redefines the place of Freud and psychoanalysis within contemporary cultural studies debates. “The genius of Žižek’s contribution,” Kenneth Reinhardt writes, “[is] to demonstrate that this version of Lacan offered an extraordinary fruitful approach to thought, culture, and religion.”

He is formidably well-read and his texts can operate at the highest levels of psychological and philosophical abstraction. He is the lead figure of a small "school" of researchers in Ljubljana whose work is based upon the controversial psychoanalytic theories of Jacques Lacan. As Colin McCabe notes in his introduction: "To give a full introduction to the range of Žižek's thinking and writing would require a book in itself" (viii). Žižek has had a huge influence upon film theory and academia generally. He is still best known for his use of the films of Hitchcock to explain Lacan and vice-versa (see his Everything You Always Wanted to Know about Lacan: But were afraid to ask Hitchcock) . His basic method is to discuss scenes from films as illustrations of highly complex psychoanalytic or philosophical processes and thus to cast light not just on the way particular films achieve their effects but on the art of film itself. Politics and provocation Readers should be aware that although Žižek has a broadly leftist political orientation, he is far from politically correct and his Lacanian fundamentalism can lead him to describe gender psychologies and relations between the sexes in ways some will find provocative and challenging. See for instance his ongoing discussion of Lacan's statement that "woman does not exist" (132).

, 23 May 2002 When Donald Rumsfeld designated the imprisoned Taliban fighters 'unlawful combatants' (as opposed to 'regular' prisoners of war), he did not simply mean that their criminal terrorist activity placed them outside the law: when an American citizen commits a crime, even one as serious as murder, he remains a 'lawful criminal'. The distinction between criminals and non-criminals has no relation to that between 'lawful' citizens and the people referred to in France as the 'Sans Papiers'. Perhaps the category of homo sacer, brought back into use by Giorgio Agamben in Homo Sacer: Sovereign Power and Bare Life (1998), is more useful here. It designated, in ancient Roman law, someone who could be killed with impunity and whose death had, for the same reason, no sacrificial value. Today, as a term denoting exclusion, it can be seen to apply not only to terrorists, but also to those who are on the receiving end of humanitarian aid (Rwandans, Bosnians, Afghans), as well as to the Sans Papiers in France and the inhabitants of the favelas in Brazil or the African American ghettoes in the US. Concentration camps and humanitarian refugee camps are, paradoxically, the two faces, 'inhuman' and 'human', of one sociological matrix. Asked about the German concentration camps in occupied Poland, 'Concentration Camp' Erhardt (in Lubitsch's

In the film, the logorrheic Slovenian philosopher discusses the efficacy of the virtual and argues for a rethinking of the categories of materialism and of utopian politics by way of the usual references to Donald Rumsfeld, Hollywood Cinema, and chocolate laxatives. Zizek's writings include Organs Without Bodies: On Deleuze and Consequences, The Puppet and the Dwarf: The Perverse Core of Christianity, and most recently Iraq: The Borrowed Kettle. Wright's previous films include "Sibirskoye Kino", "Blaze of Embers", and "Palagruza". Daniel Berchenko talks to Ben Wright about the importance of Zizek's work in understanding materialist filmmaking practice, and about the relationship between film and philosophy in general.

The moment I am at the end of one project I have the idea that I didn’t really succeed in telling what I wanted to tell, that I need a new project – it’s an absolute nightmare. But my whole economy of writing is in fact based on an obsessional ritual to avoid the actual act of writing.

I think that the most arrogant position is this apparent, multidisciplinary modesty of ‘what I am saying now is not unconditional, it is just a hypothesis’, and so on. It really is a most arrogant position. I think that the only way to be honest and expose yourself to criticism is to state clearly and dogmatically where you are. You must take the risk and have a position.
