Process Metaphysics
Many philosophers have attempted to build a process metaphysics or an evolutionary philosophy, including Alfred North Whitehead, Teilhard de Chardin, Herbert Spencer, and Henry Bergson. Their main idea is to ground a philosophy on change or development, rather than on static concepts like matter or mind. However, these early process philosophies are characterized by vagueness and mysticism, and they tend to see evolution as teleological, goal directed, guided by some supra-physical force, rather than as the blind variation and selection process that we postulate. They are thus not constructivist in the sense discussed in section constructivism.

Religion Defined
It is my purpose in the four lectures of this course to consider the type of justification which is available for belief in doctrines of religion. This is a question which in some new form challenges each generation. It is the peculiarity of religion that humanity is always shifting its attitude towards it. The contrast between religion and the elementary truths of arithmetic makes my meaning clear. Ages ago the simple arithmetical doctrines dawned on the human mind, and throughout history the unquestioned dogma that two and three make five reigned whenever it has been relevant. We all know what this doctrine means, and its history is of no importance for its elucidation. But we have the gravest doubt as to what religion means so far as doctrine is concerned. There is no agreement as to the definition of religion in its most general sense, including true and false religion; nor is there any agreement as to the valid religious beliefs, nor even as to what we mean by the truth of religion. It is for this reason that some consideration of religion as an unquestioned factor throughout the long stretch of human history is necessary to secure the relevance of any discussion of its general principles. There is yet another contrast. What is generally disputed is doubtful, and what is doubtful is relatively unimportant-other things being equal. I am speaking of general truths. We avoid guiding our actions by general principles which are entirely unsettled. If we do not know what number is the product of 69 and 67, we defer any action presupposing the answer, till we have found out. This little arithmetical puzzle can be put aside till it is settled, and it is capable of definite settlement with adequate trouble.

Alfred North Whitehead’s Process and Reality Alfred North Whitehead’s Process and Reality: An Essay in Cosmology is based on the Gifford Lectures which he delivered at the University of Edinburgh in 1927-8. Whitehead presents a system of speculative philosophy which is based on a categoreal scheme of investigation, designed to explain how concrete aspects of human experience can provide a foundation for our understanding of reality. Whitehead also investigates how reality can be defined as a process of becoming. The lectures are divided into five parts: "Part I: The Speculative Scheme;" "Part II: Discussions and Applications;" "Part III: The Theory of Prehensions;" "Part IV: The Theory of Extension;" and "Part V: Final Interpretation." Part I describes how abstract concepts may arise from the examination of concrete actual entities. Part II describes how ‘symbolic reference’ may arise as an interplay between two modes of perception: ‘causal efficacy’ and ‘presentational immediacy.’ Part III presents a theory of the nature of feelings, and discusses the relation between propositions and feelings. Part IV discusses how perception and feeling of extension in space and in time may be analyzed. Part V presents Whitehead’s view of God as the absolute unity of all actuality. According to Whitehead, there are four types of categories: 1) the Category of the Ultimate, 2) the Categories of Existence, 3) the Categories of Explanation, and 4) the Categoreal Obligations.

In Bertrand Russell: The Ghost of Madness, 1921-1970, Ray Monk completes his account of the philosopher’s life begun in his acclaimed Bertrand Russell: The Spirit of Solitude, 1872-1921 (1996). Monk provides an important corrective to the usual image of Russell as a benign eminence grise, an espouser of quaint but ultimately harmless social views, and a culmination of the philosophical tradition that had produced such figures as Alfred North Whitehead (1861-1947) and Kurt G¶del (1906-1978). Source: enotes.com It was on this date, May 18, 1872, that British mathematician and philosopher Bertrand Arthur William Russell, the third Earl Russell, was born in Trelleck, Monrnouthshire, Wales. Early in his writing career he embraced materialism. His Principia Mathematica is a three-volume work on the foundations of mathematics, written by Russell and Alfred North Whitehead and published in 1910-1913. Source: ronaldbrucemeyer.com

  • Alfred North Whitehead (1861–1947) believed that the future course of world history depends upon people's decisions as to the relation between science and religion. In fact, the force of religious intuitions and the force of scientific endeavors are the two most powerful forces in history. Whitehead's solution to conflicts between science and religion was to suggest modifications in both science and religion, as each has been traditionally understood, so that an inclusive alternative world-view might be constructed. He turned to speculative philosophy for this constructive task. Whitehead proposed that philosophy attains its chief importance by fusing religion and science into one rational scheme of thought.

Whitehead, Alfred North English philosopher and mathematician. In his 'theory of organism', he attempted a synthesis of metaphysics and science. His works include Principia Mathematica 1910-13 (with Bertrand Russell), The Concept of Nature 1920, and Adventures of Ideas 1933.
Whitehead's research in mathematics involved a highly original attempt - incorporating the principles of logic - to create an extension of ordinary algebra to universal algebra (A Treatise of Universal Algebra 1898), and a meticulous re-examination of the relativity theory of Albert Einstein.
Whitehead was born in Ramsgate, Kent, and studied at Cambridge. He was professor of applied mathematics at London University 1914-24 and professor of philosophy at Harvard University, USA, 1924-37.
At the International Congress of Philosophy in 1900, Whitehead and Russell heard Italian mathematician Giuseppe Peano describe the method by which he had arrived at his axioms concerning the natural numbers, and they spent the next ten years on their project to deduce mathematics from logic in a general and fundamental way.
Other works include Principles of Natural Knowledge 1919, Science and the Modern World 1925, and Process and Reality 1929.

When they arrived in the Harvard Square community in 1924, an astonishing transformation took place with respect to his productivity. He delivered a series of Lowell Lectures on Science and the Modern World in 1925. Following this classic work, he delivered in the very next year Lowell Lectures on Religion in the Making . This little book abounds with aphoristic wisdom and insight, containing phrases such as the movement from God the Void, to God the Enemy, to God the Companion. The following year saw the publication of Symbolism: Its Meaning and Effect . Only two years later, in 1929, his magnum opus arrived: Process and Reality: An Essay in Cosmology . In the very same year, two other volumes by him were published: The Function of Reason is one; the other is a gathering of essays on
