free download I f Otto Weininger continues to inspire genius through what he has left us then I will consider half my work already done. His book Sex and Character is one of the few masterpieces of modern times. In it, Weininger overflows with profound insight, deepest love, and awesome courage. To quote the eloquent author of an old book: We have all come under the spell of Otto Weininger, even those of us who have never heard of him, for he was one of those geniuses whose ideas echo far beyond any sound that is made by their names. . . O tto Weininger's extraordinary life culminated in the publication of his timeless work Sex and Character . Soon after the publication he went to Italy to await results. There appeared to be none, and during the next four months an intellectual malady, described by his friends as "a too grave sense of responsibility," became acute. On October 4, 1903, at the age of 23, he took his own life. . . . "Sex & Character" began to sell. It ran through printing after printing. It was translated into innumerable languages, and in a few years his publishers could declare with no more than pardonable exaggeration that no scientific book in the whole history of books had ever a greater success.

12. Otto Weininger Notes
otto weininger? weininger sees genius as primordial maleness. But how could one survey the whole field of genius without falling under someone s spell?
Go to My Writing for explanation of this document. Otto Weininger Notes
Brilliance of Weininger's book ( Sex and Character) Time Out His rejection of empirical psychology from the point of view of Kantian freewill, later made so much of by existentialists. Of course there are difficulties with empirical psychology and what statements it feels moved to make about the value and purpose of life. Difficulties answered by the will to power. Assertion of freewill like a subjective interpretation of the will to power. If some psychological system lays down the supposed path to happiness I am of course free to reject that, but why might I feel motivated to do so? Freewill seems an almost meaningless explanation except insofar as it is a confession of relativism, a refusal to judge or classify people's ideas about themselves. Against Weininger, Dollards book Caste and Class in a Southern Town suggests the extent to which character, intelligence and capacity are the result of social position. One might put up a similar case for inferiority of the Negro or even the Irish. Linking of maleness with acceptance of categorical imperative, too tendentious and dogmatic. Going too far in saying what genius must be like, in so doing he manages to abut the freedom he claims for it. Much of what he says about memory is fine, his idea of the polarity of male and female is brilliant in its way. Concede his own genius. Spengler described Weininger as a great Jewish mystic, a late religious consciousness destroyed in the agony of an essentially Magian dualism. His dismissal of science and of the analytic or empirical mode of thought, too cavalier. A very young man and a Germanic cultural patriot, perhaps he underestimated the power of some things that are not said. His Christianity in his lack of appreciation of the need for negation blasphemy etc., thus of the satisfaction that can be provided by some forms of pure science or analytical philosophy.... Weininger wants to capture the forces of life into a particular doctrine, he even seems to want assent to that on the part of those worthy to represent life. He attacks Nietzsche for wanting to shock. How could he understand Satan?

13. Sex And Character Assassination
otto weininger is seen by some men as an important theorist of sexual otto weininger published a tract on sexuality in 1903 titled Sex and Character.
Otto Weininger: sexism lives again
This page is a small review of Otto Weininger, a man whose ideologies represent a historic response to changes in male and female concepts of rights and entitlements at the beginning of the 20th century. Weininger made claims of male superiority over women and that the sexes should occupy different domains. Yet Weininger is no way an authority on the subject of sexual power and competence. More than anything else, the study of Weininger gives an insight into one dimension of the sexual attitudes and politics that emerged 100 years ago.
Otto Weininger published a tract on sexuality in 1903 titled Sex and Character . The book was one of many that dealt with the subject of sexuality in this period. But this should be seen in the context of the era. The beginning of the 20th century witnessed a revolution in sexual ideas and agitation. The most famous author of the period was of course Sigmund Freud, who was still publishing in the 1930s, but others included Havelock Ellis and Bauer, who have now unfortunately been obscured by time. Weininger is exceptional in that he was only 23 When he wrote his book and committed suicide soon afterwards. It is surprising to see so young a person articulate a whole theory of sex, especially given the puritan and repressive conditions of the era. However he was of course dealing primarily with what we now call gender issues, rather than the politics of penetration and serial intimacies. Also, the middle classes primarily talked about sex by making their their discussion "scientific". Psychology was a particularly good vehicle for this.

Turn-of-the century Vienna is remembered as an aesthetic, erotic, and intellectual world: the birthplace of Freud and psychoanalysis, the waltz, and novels of Schnitzler. The contexts of this cultural vibrancy, Chandak Sengoopta argues, were darker and more complex than we might imagine.
This provocative, enlightening study explores the milieu in which the philosopher Otto Weininger (1880-1903) wrote his controversial book Sex and Character.

OTTO WEININGER Otto Weininger was born in Vienna in 1880. He was a brilliant student in high school (Gymnasium), exhibiting a special flair for the humanities. Later, he also developed a keen interest in the natural sciences and mathematics. He possessed his parents' talent for languages and at eighteen, apart from German, knew Latin and Greek, spoke French, English, and Italian well, and was fluent in Spanish and Norwegian. At age sixteen, he wrote an etymological essay on certain Greek adjectives found only in Homer and attempted unsuccessfully to publish it in a leading philological journal of the time. He was not, however, a model schoolboy. He frequently disturbed classroom teaching and followed his own inclinations in his studies, rarely paying heed to his teachers. "My pleasure in 'hell-raising' in class is my pleasure in chaos," Weininger noted in his pocket notebook in 1903.
After graduating from high school in 1898, Otto enrolled in the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Vienna , ignoring his father's wish that he study languages. Otto also joined the Philosophical Society of the university, which organized weekly lectures on diverse scholarly (and not just narrowly philosophical) subjects.
