ERIC VOEGELIN Eric Voegelin, one of the most distinguished interpreters of the non-liberal streams of European thought, was one of the most provocative and durable political philosophers of this century. His thought had a profound influence on contemporary conservatism. Characteristic for his thought was his reliance on metaphysical categories. At the heart of Eric Voegelin's thought is the relationship between the truth of order discovered in experiences of transcendence and the incarnation of that order in particular societies. The tension that exists between the truth of order and its social incarnation and the failure of any given society to fully embody this order are recurrent themes in this preeminent philosopher's work. th century: The New Science of Politics and the first volumes of Order and History . In 1958 he was appointed professor to the University in Munich, where he built up the institute for political science.
Following his retirement in 1968 he returned to the United States, where he worked as Henry Salvatori Distinguished Scholar from 1969 to 1974 and as Senior Research Fellow at Hoover Institution on War, Revolution and Peace

The praying speaker acknowledges that God stirs human beings to delight in praising him "because thou hast made us toward thyself and our heart is restless until it rests in thee" (quia fecisti nos ad te et inquietum est cor nostrum donec requiescat in te; 1.1.1). Each essay rests on the underlying question: is it possible or desirable to construct or discover political foundations without resorting to metaphysical or essentialist constructs? The introduction focuses on the two nineteenth-century thinkers, Nietzsche and Husserl, who have framed the debate about modernity and postmodernity; thereafter, the book examines Voegelin's ideas as compared to those of other twentieth-century thinkers. What will impress scholars most about this collection is the provocative dialogue created between Voegelin and other major thinkers of postmodernism that addresses the issue of establishing foundations without foundationalism.

Eric Voegelin (1901 - 1985): Political Scientist and Philosopher of History
Photograph: Eric Voegelin Archiv , Munich.
Even though his most important works are on intellectual history and on the philosophy of history, Eric Voegelin primarily considered himself a political scientist. He regarded it as his most important task to revitalize the science of political order with the help of an exegesis of classical religious and philosophical scriptures. In Voegelin's opinion our knowledge of political order should be based on an authentic experience of transcendence fostered by the words of eminent philosophers and prophets; an experience that has largely fallen into oblivion due to the processes of secularization in modern times. Voegelin was firmly convinced that the Western societies can only withstand the temptation of totalitarian ideology by regaining a proper consciousness of transcendent "reality". In his early period (until 1938) Eric Voegelin tended to an authoritarian conservativism, somewhat influenced by the ideals of the circle around the sectarian german poet Stefan George. Although Eric Voegelin was certainly not a democrat at this time, his rejection of National Socialism must still be considered as genuine. When Austria was unified with the German Reich in 1938, Voegelin, who was then living in Vienna, had to flee from the Gestapo. Together with his wife Lissy he emigrated to the U.S., where he found a new home in Baton Rogue in Louisiana. His time in Baton Rogue may justifiably be considered as the most important creative period in Voegelin's life: It was during this period that the first three volumes of "Order and History" originated and that Voegelin wrote his programmatic "New Science of Politics".

Excerpt from Eric Voegelin on "Freedom of Conscience"
Freedom of Conscience
(II) Orthodoxy vs. Freedom
Gnostic-Manichaean Dualism
In English political thought [the gnostic-Manichaean dualism of orthodoxy and freedom] has its venerable ancestry in Hobbes's Leviathan with its opposition of the "Christian Commonwealth" to the "Kingdom of Darkness"; and the tradition is both preserved and renewed in Mr.[R.G.] Collingwood's New Leviathan where the dualism, in the more secularist form of "Civilization" and "Barbarism," is erected into the principle that defines political cultures and governs the process of history. This dualistic formula, while adequately expressing the political perspective of a gnostic metaphysician, will, however, not pass the test of critical application. The thesis that there is no religious freedom under a system based on orthodoxy must be rejected.
There was, of course, religious freedom in plenty during the Middle Ages, as is attested by the range of religious personalities from Saint Francis to Saint Thomas, by the range of theological speculation from realism to nominalism, by the foundation of numerous special religiones within Christianity, ranging from hermits to military orders, and by the great mystics from Eckhardt to Cusanus. But such concrete reminders should not overshadow the general argument that, whenever a great religious civilization unfolds, somebody must have taken the liberty to create it.
Nevertheless, the thesis [that unlike modern Protestant England, Medieval Christianity was an oppressor of freedom of conscience and religion] has a nucleus of truth; heretics were persecuted, indeed; and some varieties of religious experience were not allowed the freedom to express themselves.

ERIC VOGELIN'S THEORY OF CONSCIOUSNESS Steve R. McCarl
Department of Political Science
University of Denver Accepted for publication in the APSR
scheduled to appear March 1992 Eric Voegelin's Theory of Consciousness The self stands in the way of understanding and appreciating consciousness. The self is a reflexive, asymmetrical bit of consciousness which displaces the whole of consciousness and the open nature of consciousness. Such displacements of consciousness are expressions of gnosticism. Some political movements (e.g., fascism) are expressions of such restrictions of the horizon of consciousness. To understand and appreciate consciousness requires a degree of selflessness on the part of the inquirer. Philosophy and myth are modes of discourse which embody and cultivate the selflessness necessary for participating in, appreciating, and understanding consciousness. Such philosophizing enhances the possibility of more inclusive joint political action.
Voegelin is explicit about the political significance of a theory of consciousness. He says that his "analysis of the movements of Communism, Fascism, National Socialism, and racism, of constitutionalism, liberalism, and authoritarianism had made it clear beyond a doubt that the center of a philosophy of politics had to be a theory of consciousness..." (1977, 3).
