About Ernest Nagel
Ernest Nagel (1901-1985), one of the most prominent philosophers of science in the 20th century, argued most strongly for the connection between philosophy and science. His book, The Structure of Science: Problems in the Logic of Scientific Explanation (1961) is a classic of the field. In the Encyclopedia of Philosophy, H. S. Thayes writes it is a masterly and complete exposition of his analysis of explanation, the logic of scientific inquiry, and the logical structure of the organization of scientific knowledge, and it illuminates the cardinal issues concerning the foundation and the assessment of explanation in physics and in the biological and social sciences. Settling for Less: Explanation and the Philosophy of Technology
] By Ian J Slater[ Additionally, although Tomassi does not dwell on this issue in his article, Van Fraassen's account requires that truth claims in science should be limited to statements about the observable. Van Fraassen asserts that we can know scientific statements about observables to be true or false, but statements about theoretical unobservables (e.g., electrons) are unverifiable. To accept a theory is to believe that it is empirically adequate - that what the theory says about what is observable is true (Van Fraassen 1980, p 18). Van Fraassen rejects the possibility of determining the truth of statements about unobservables as these statements are verification-transcendent. Verification-transcendence is a consequence of our inability to exhibit the character of unobservables, a point, originally from Duhem, that Tomassi discusses (Tomassi 1996, sect 3). Statements about observables are potentially empirically adequate and true, whereas statements about unobservables are unverifiable, and classed as metaphysical.[ ] In summary, Tomassi's article presents two main reasons why we should reject the claim that explanation is the aim of science: the redundancy of explanation and verification transcendence. Tomassi concludes in his article that explanation is not the aim of science, empirical adequacy and successful technological intervention are the real aims. Here I will offer a critique both of Van Fraassen's view on explanation, and the conclusions Tomassi draws from it.

What Does Bayesian Epistemology Have To Do With Probabilities?
The answer to the question in the title of this post may seem obvious (after all, isn't Bayesianism all about probabilities?), but I think that the long discussion that followed Lauren's post on van Fraassen's objection to Bayesianism from quantum mechanics shows that it isn't clear at all - or at least, that it wasn't clear to either of us as we were discussing the issue. I think that I now understand why. In this post, I'm going to give three answers to this question, which I will call The Primitivist Account (P), The Kripkean Possible Worlds Account (KPW), and the Lewisian Possible Worlds Account (LPW). This post will discuss what each view means, and where vagueness enters each account. I will also be identifying three crucial problems with (P) and showing how each of the other views answers these difficulties. Here are brief definitions of each view, and how each one relates subjective degrees of rational confidence to probabilities (I will explain in more depth later).

vollmer@uab.edu "Two Kinds of Observation: Why van Fraassen Was Right to Make a Distinction, but Made the Wrong One" Sara H. Vollmer
Van Fraassen's constructivist empiricist account of theories makes an epistemic distinction between entities that can and cannot be observed with the naked eye. The belief that a theoretical description of an entity that is observable with the naked eye is correct can be warranted by a theory. In contrast, no theory can warrant beliefs about descriptions of unobservable entities. I argue that we ought instead adopt a view that takes account of the fact that some entities that cannot be observed with the naked eye can nevertheless be observed on the basis of the same physical principle as those entities that can be. This suggests that there is a distinction different from van Fraassen's that might do the work van Fraassen intends his to do, but a distinction that is principled. Understanding why this is so suggests that his distinction is grounded merely in human chauvinism.

Paper Abstract:
Paper Introduction:
The question of observability as examined by Bas C. Van Fraassen and others is an issue of knowledge, of acceptable evidence, of the proper means for testing hypotheses, and of understanding the nature of scientific empiricism. Van Fraassen states that observability has clear limits in science, limits which he attempts to elucidate through examples and analysis. He finds that scientific theory must serve to explain what is observable to be accepted. Van Fraassen begins by considering the opposition between empiricism and realism, leading to a consideration of the nature of observability from an empirical standpoint. In part, difficulties over the issue of observability can be seen as deriving from the progress of science over time. In earlier periods, realists held sway and depended on observabilitywhat Text of the Paper: The entire text of the paper is shown below. However, the text is somewhat scrambled.
